From Curnutte...

Lewis said that the team suffered two notable injuries Sunday at Kansas City. Wide receiver Antonio Chatman (hamstring) and linebacker Corey Mays (hamstring) were injured but still have a chance to returning to the field for the Jets game Sunday afternoon.

Out will be right tackle Willie Anderson (heel, knee), safety Ethan Kilmer (knee) and wide receiver Tab Perry (hip).

"We'll see where Ahmad (Brooks, groin) is," Lewis said.

Lewis did say linebackers Caleb Miller (back) and Rashad Jeanty (calf) have an opportunity to practice this week.

Lewis also said tailback Rudi Johnson (hamstring) "came though the game" but experienced tightness in the hamstring during the third quarter. Johnson said Sunday he did not aggravate the leg.

Tight end Reggie Kelly suffered a sprained left ankle but returned to the game and said afterward that he was fine.

Running back Chris Perry, who is eligible to return from the physically unbable to perform (PUP) list this week, said he has not been told yet by coaches whether he will be back in time for the Jets game. Lewis declined to speculate about Perry's immediate future or the team's plans for the running back this week.

So Mays lasted all of a game before getting hurt? Sheesh, will someone take the curse off the LBs already...

A little more from Hobs...looks like May is indeed out for the Jets...

Their newest linebacker, Corey Mays, didn't make it out of his Bengals debut Sunday on special teams and he's not expected to play this Sunday but Lewis didn't think they'd have to make a counter roster move with Miller and Jeanty coming back.

Lewis said they would look at the left tackle situation after the benching of Levi Jones and Andrew Whitworth's steadying play against the Chiefs before making a move for Sunday.

Hmmm...looking at tackle. Wonder if there's any chance they are looking at bringing Nate Livings (college LG and LT) up from the PS? That may be why they are hesitating to pull the trigger on Chris Perry...

Wtf is up with Brooks is he coming back or what i mean this long for a groin this must be one hell of a groin problem its been awhile now since we seen him so whats up with him. I cant wait to get everyone back who is injured on the defense to really see if it changes how they have played i guess time will tell.

They could just be being cautious; you don't want to rush him back and have him reinjure it and be out even longer.

But, given the way this season has gone to date, I'd lay money it turns out to be a sports hernia and he's going to be gone for the year.

Well if this is the case then i wish they would have called back Hartwell then at least he can play the middle linebacker and is also very vocal and could maybe even help the young guys stay in postion. I still think that was a bad mistake letting him go i know he dosnt play special teams, but the way the LBs are now they could use him.

I think if they thought Hartwell still had game they would have brought him in by now. But yeah, if he can't get back I have to seriously think about stashing him on IR and signing the best available LB.

As to roster moves I'd make now if I were in charge, I would:

1. Put Kilmer on IR. Promote Nate Livings to the active roster.

2. Put Tab Perry on IR. Activate Chris Perry.

Today's morning report from Hobs...

http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=6363

Good news is that Willie suited up. Jeanty is also apparently active to some degree but Hobs was kind of vague. C. Perry working on the sideline. Among those not practicing were Reggie K. and Rudi.

why is Chris Perry not practicing?

Damfino. But Curnutte confirms Jeanty is practicing:

LB help: Jeanty practicing

After watching linebacker after linebacker fall to injury, the Bengals actually welcomed one back into the fold this morning. Rashad Jeanty, the projected preseason starter at strong-side linebacker, is practicing for the first time since August. He had surgery on his lower leg before the season and has not played.

But middle linebacker Ahmad Brooks (groin) is not practicing. Neither is fellow linebacker Caleb Miller (back).

Right tackle Willie Anderson (heel, knee) is on the field in uniform and practicing. He did not play Sunday at Kansas City.

Running backs Rudi Johnson (hamstring) and Chris Perry (ankle) are working on the side with strength and conditioning coaches. Johnson was limited at Kansas City but is expected to work more Sunday against the Jets. Perry has been on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and is eligible to practice beginning this week. Coach Marvin Lewis was non-committal Monday when asked if Perry would be in uniform Sunday. Putting him on the 53-man roster would require a transaction.

Willie must have gotten some horse-sized cortisone shots...

The LB spot got bolstered by bringing in Kevis Coley, a Jags cast-off. Better than sending Ndukwe to the line to stack the box. Getting Jeanty back will be good for passing downs.

Perry still not dressing...he's not coming back anytime soon. With the Jets coming to town, no need to rush until he is 100%. Give DeDe some touches, ferchrissakes.

An update from Hobs...

After pulling Levi Jones early in the second quarter of Sunday's game in Kansas City, Marvin Lewis said Jones would start at left tackle this week against the Jets.

"We're counting on Levi to bounce back and we think he will," Lewis said. "He's a very prideful young man and I know he's excited to get back and put his best foot forward."

Jones was benched after the Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen logged 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

The Bengals had a surprsie participant at Wednesday's practice when right tackle Willie Anderson suited up. Anderson, who was able to log only three snaps October 1 against New England and then missed last Sunday's game in Kansas City to break a streak of 116 straight starts, was in shoulder pads and shorts along with the rest of his teammates as practice got under way and went in limited fashion.

It was believed Anderson would miss up to a month with his knee and foot injuries, but it looks like he's going to try to give his team a lift as the Bengals look to climb out of a 1-4 hole.

Anderson came back on a day that Lewis said, "We had a good, spirited practice. We're not walking around here as a team that's won one football game and that's the approach we have to take until we've won the second one, and begin to go one after one after one."

Running back Chris Perry, who is eligible to start practicing after spending the first six weeks of the season on the physically unable to perform list (PUP), did not practice with his teammates, although he was on the field and appeared ready to do some work on the side.

One piece of good news for the depleted Bengals linebacker corps was the appearance of linebacker Rashad Jeanty, who has yet to play this season while nursing a lower leg injury. Not dressed for Wednesday's practice were linebackers Ahmad Brooks and Caleb Miller, running back Rudi Johnson, tight end Reggie Kelly and wide receiver Antonio Chatman.

Also not working Wednesday were free safety Madieu Williams (back) and linebacker Corey Mays (hamstring).

Lewis did say Miller will practice Thursday, and Jeanty said it's "iffy" if he plays after not practicing for nearly two months. But he participated fully Wednesday. Defensive tackle Jon Fanene (knee) also went full.

A second update from hobs...now the story adds info on C. Perry's return (real soon) and that geathers has now been moved "permanently" to SSLB...

Running back Chris Perry, who is eligible to start practicing after spending the first six weeks of the season on the physically unable to perform list (PUP), did not practice with his teammates. He was on the field and appeared ready to do some work on the side.

Lewis says he'll spring him soon, but won't say when.

"Yeah, I actually probably do know when. But we'll wait until we do that," Lewis said. "Chris has really done well. He's working hard. If he doesn't have any setbacks here with anything, it should be in short order."

One piece of good news for the depleted Bengals linebacker corps was the appearance of linebacker Rashad Jeanty, who has yet to play this season while nursing a lower leg injury.

But it looks like he's lost his position on the strong side to Robert Geathers, suddenly a former left end.

"He's a linebacker now," Lewis said. "Permanently right now. As permanent as right now can be."

Don't know if I like the Geathers move at all. I don't get to watch the games all the time this season because of the move, but that's our best dlineman.

Well, it's not as if Geathers was piling up sacks on the line. And with Rucker and Fanene both healthy (apparently), and the LB corps still a wreck, why not? I'm sure they will have him rushing Penny a lot, basically the same joker role Pollack had for most of '05.

All this tells me is that Geathers has enough talent to be better than the rpleacement LB's we've had to add due to injuries. If Jeanty comes back, the rotation looks to be Landon, Schlegel, Jones, Geathers and Jeanty...with Brooks, Miller, Mays hurting and the newest guy, Kevis Coley, just getting here.

If Fanaene/Frostee can rotate at end with Justin and Robinson then we could see Geathers at LB for quite some time. It seems much of this is due to Frostee and Fanaene getting healthy.

I'm not thrilled with the move of Geathers to LB but it fits neatly into my feelings about the other moves that have been made, and not made, at the LB position. I think far too much has been made out of the Bengals reluctance to sign what are little more than street free agents....just so you can say you've got another LB on the roster. No solution is perfect under the current conditions, but I can actually support the idea of shifting lineman and secondary players who already know the defense into the LB ranks.

As for the hole created on the defensive line, Rucker now has two games of backup duty under his belt, and those games were sandwiched around the bye week. In terms of experience that's paper thin, but due to injuries that's where this team is now.

In regards to Fanene, wasn't today his first full practice in forever? If true I wouldn't count on him contributing anything for another week or two.

Mildly interesting note buried in the Palmer piece on bengals.com today: the No. 3 wideout for the Jets game will be Glenn Holt. They kept trying to shove Chatman into the spot after Tab "can't catch a cold" Perry went down, but Holt has outplayed him IMHO (tho Chatman did get jobbed on what ought to have been a big catch in KC).

Really wish they'd stuck with Holt after the Cleveland game. The revolving door at the No. 3 wideout position hasn't helped Carson.

I think its because Chatman hurt his hammy again, not because he's not earning the spot. Either way, the point would be moot if they would throw to the TE more. I've never heard of a team complain so much about them missing their 3rd WR. It seems that our play calling gets stale when we're behind, and creative when we're ahead.

I dunno, I like the idea of Geathers playing LB, I think it gives him more flexibility to rush the passer, which what he is paid to do.

They can line him up anywhere and let him loose, kinda like the Giants do with Usi Umenyora(sp?). I think a if you put Geathers on the same side as J.Smith and let both guys rush the passer while blitzing a corner or safety from the other side of the line you could get consistant pressure on the qb.

Actually, I think they have been throwing to the TE at least as often as in the past, if not more. Bengals TEs had 36 receptions in 2006 and 37 in 2005, and they have 11 now through five games. Frankly I wish they'd throw the ball less, period; they've run something like 211 pass plays to just 112 runs so far.

I know what you mean re the playcalling. It seems like they have two plays: either run the ball up the gut or have carson try to chuck it downfield. Things like delays or draws or screens seem few and far between.

Len P quotes Marvin as saying that Jumpy Jr's move to LB is permanent:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3068940

With the position ravaged by injuries, the Cincinnati Bengals have moved left defensive end Robert Geathers to strongside linebacker, and he could stay there for a while.

"He's a linebacker now," coach Marvin Lewis said. "Permanently right now. As permanent as right now can be."
