TecmoFever
Wow, that was a truly great read. I had just recently started thinking about how it would feel to get cut because the son of a guy that I know just got cut from the Browns (Rob Smith from Ft. Thomas Highlands and UT). I've never even seen the kid since he was little, but I was following his progress in camp again this year. He was an undrafted FA last year and should've stayed in school one more year. He made the team last year, though, and even started the last game of the season against the Texans. I'm not sure if he made their practice squad or got picked up by another team. But if he didn't get picked up by anyone, I thought about that "puppy-dog" response that he'll get from all of the people back home. This article was really enlightening. As sad as it was, he is in one of the better positions possible. He's a Princeton grad who actually made some money in the NFL and was smart enough to invest it early. Think about the Quincy Wilson-types who never really get their chance. They stay on year after year, get cut, survive the cuts, and then get cut after the team picks up some guy that has never put on a Bengals uniform. Painful. I guess I'm glad that I'm a skinny white guy who couldn't even make a high-school football team so that I don't have to feel that kind of disappointment. HoosierCat
I saw that yesterday. Best MMQB column ever, and not just because it wasn't written by that ding-dong King.
The PatternMaster
Very good article by Ross Tucker, there are few quotes that I thought really captured the essence of this article.I never thought the end would come like this -- with me holding the end of my life's passion in one hand and a foot long Italian sub on wheat in the other. Spoken like a lineman Most of the guys who got cut in the last few days will go back to their hometown and things will feel a little bit different. Guys who are used to being cheered and revered every time they go back home will now be met by people with a puppy-dog expression in their eyes that says they know something bad has happened. Some might ask things like, "What happened? Why did they cut you? Have you talked to any other teams? What does your agent say?" It would almost be easier to wear a T-shirt that said "Got Cut, Not Sure, Thanks for Your Support." But it is not the same as playing. Nothing else in life can replicate the feeling of running into another man in front of 90,000 people and hitting him as hard as you possibly can. My mom will probably hate reading this, but more than the paycheck or the camaraderie of the locker room, I will really miss the violence. It is just an amazing and pure primal feeling that you really don't understand if you have never had the chance to do it Honest, but almost too honest, maybe some counselling is in order for Mr. Tucker. I'm just sayin..Can't say I feel sorry for Tucker because he got paid millions of dollars, got a free education from Princeton Univ., and lived his dream for six years. He'll be fine, although his body is banged up.Ironically this is the best MMQB column I've read in quite some time, maybe the fact that King didn't write it has something to do with it. BengalszoneBilly
Ironically this is the best MMQB column I've read in quite some time, maybe the fact that King didn't write it has something to do with it.I have to say it was totally the human element of the piece that struck me as "post worthy'. It made me feel as though I too got cut.

The PatternMaster
Some guys write a nice well written article detailing their emotions and feelings....and some guys go home get blasted and beat up their dad...The day after being cut by the New England Patriots, punter Danny Baugher is alleged to have turned his anger and frustration on his 54-year-old father.Baugher, released by the team on Aug. 29, has been charged with assaulting his father, Erle, in a fast-food parking lot at 4 a.m. on Aug. 30, police said.Police said Danny Baugher, 23, was drunk at the time and told them that he "was released by the New England Patriots [Aug. 29] and he was not handling it very well," according to a police report obtained by the Boston Herald.Baugher pleaded not guilty to assault and battery last Thursday in Hingham (Mass.) District Court. He was released on his own recognizance with the condition he refrain from domestic abuse, according to the Herald. The Patriots signed Baugher to their practice squad last season after his release by the Cincinnati Bengals. He did not appear on New England's 2006 roster but was hoping to win the full-time job for 2007 when the team released veteran Josh Miller.Patriots coach Bill Belichick signed 30-year-old veteran Chris Hanson for the job out of training camp. Hanson, who was released by the New Orleans Saints earlier that week, has 428 punts for 18,347 yards with the Green Bay Packers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has averaged 42.9 yards per punt."Coach Belichick always says he has to make a lot of decisions on a daily basis and he always tries to make the decision that's best for the football team," Patriots spokesman Stacey James said, according to the Herald. "I don't get the sense that [baugher's release] was anything non-football-related."According to the police report, a spat between father and son inside a vehicle escalated to the point where Danny Baugher punched Erle in the face. Erle Baugher declined medical treatment.
