In a vote of their teammates, the Bengals have elected quarterback Carson Palmer as their offensive captain and tackle John Thornton as their defensive captain for the upcoming season.

Head coach Marvin Lewis made the announcement in a press release Tuesday in a moves that comes on the heels of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's initiative to strengthen the leadership roles of team captains, and Palmer and Thornton will wear the league's captains' patches on their game jerseys. Also Tuesday, the Bengals got their roster to 74 players, one under the limit, in part by putting left tackle Adam Kieft on season-ending injured reserve for the second time in three seasons. The limit is 75 until Saturday's final cut, and that may indicate they may add a kicker to work Friday's preseason finale in the wake of Shayne Graham's hip pointer suffered Monday night in Atlanta.

Why does Emperor Goodell want to impact the role of team captain on a football team? That's not his job.

Just another empty gesture that appears to mean something. Maybe it will be addressed by Tony(i)(e) Kornheiser next Monday so that the public can fully understand it.

Doesn't this sound like something out of pony league? Captains? Do they get badges and a hall pass to perform bedcheck?
