I got my hopes up when I saw the first part of the title...I thought the Bengals were going to finally cut him. <_<

I just can't believe this kind of talk man. I don't understand where you guys are coming from?? He will play again one of these days, why not hold on to 'em? He's a freaking stud, that won't change, him changing his life and string of bad luck WILL.

Odell isn't a Ricky Williams, he's not a crackhead he's got a drinking problem. He violated the substance abuse policy, which was stupid to begin with and now he just can not seem to get rid of that horrible past... Roger is too damn conservative and needs to go, NO ONE respects his candy ass... Comparing Odell's '07 suspension to the same suspension sentence that Pacman recieved doesn't make 1 f**king bit of sense.

I never understood this type of thinking either.

You want the Bengals to cut him ? Why ?

I don`t want Odell to teach my kids, drive them around, or perform surgery on them.

I want him to tackle the guys wearing different helmets and/or try to get the

ball away from them, so he can try to help the Bengals win.

Why do some people act like he screwed their daughter, or wife (same difference

for the people that live in Kentucky, West Virginia or Pissburgh ^_^ ) when

he obviously had a personal problem and is trying to get his life back on track ?

Odell IS still a Bengal. And he should be getting support and love from Bengals fans,

not be shunned and hated on. Well, in my opinion that`s the way it should be . . .

I don't know what's more sickening, the fact that Odell will be out for another season or the lack of support that this conservative city shows a guy that's down and trying to get it turned around.

.....the lack of support that this conservative city shows a guy that's down and trying to get it turned around.

A guy who's "trying to get it turned around" manages to call his probation officer when scheduled.

I'm not worried, though....as you've assured us less-cerebral types all along, he'll be one of our starting linebackers this year......

I'm thinking that Odell is a Ricky Williams. It's no easier to stop being an alcoholic than it is to stop being in love with MJ. It may, in fact, be harder -- at least for some people. I don't see that Odell has taken the first step toward dealing with that problem and, until he does, he's clearly not going to play for the Bengals. I hate the Goodell decision -- as my comments after the fact show -- but it's hard to get too righteously indignant in defense of a guy who isn't taking his problems as seriously as his fans are. The probation thing doesn't mean that much to me except that OT's not taking care of his business yet. I don't know if the NFL knew about it when the suspension was upheld or not -- it really doesn't matter now though. I think it's a totally legitimate thing for a Bengals fan to simply want this melodrama to go away. If you don't that's cool, but you have been so utterly wrong about everything related to OT that your credibility is zip.

Also, I don't think that Odell is likely to play well when/if he could come back. I think that his "bad luck" as you call it will continue and I don't ever see him playing again. Nobody knows if that's right until it happens, but two years -- damn -- it'd be a miracle if he comes back from that and I don't think it will be for the Bengals in any event.

On the bright side, though, you've given TJJ something to be right about.

look at it this way:

What does it cost the Bengals to keep the lifeline that connects them?

I am unsure whether they are still paying on his contract or just have his rights.

Apart from the negative press that could happen if he keeps straying from the straight & narrow, there is not a big impact to keep ties with Odell. Since he cannot return, it does not hurt really to keep his rights.

What impact would it have to Odell and the Bengals to finally have those ties severed?

I think it would have serious negative impact on Odell to lose that lifeline of support/something to work towards.

For the Bengals, there is not really an upside except for unloading a distraction.

For all the time, enegry and emotion that they have spent on Odell, to cut ties now and walk away would be a crap thing to do. Given how much they have done with/for Cheech, I think Odell deserves the time he's being given.

Now, as for the probation meeting being missed, this is just dumb. The probation officer and Ham Co SHeerifs take it seriously, and rightly so, and so should have Odell. To miss a meeting that Odell knew was to take place for months in advance might just underline the extent of his overall damage and problems.

I hope the guy can work through his problems, even if just to get a normal life out of the whole thing, football notwithstanding.

Old,

You say that you don't understand the hateful thinking of others, nor do I.

You then go on to make a hateful, disparaging remark about people who live in KY and WV.

Why would you do that? And before you defend it by referring to it as a joke, I'd say a joke in extremely poor taste.

I'm with you on the pissburgh part of it!

By all accounts, he has done everything asked of him for the past year,

except meet his PROBATION Officer. And he`ll have his day in

court for that soon. I`m sure there is a valid excuse. I just can`t

see his Agent, Lawyer, Family/Friends and the team not knowing

about the meeting . . .

...

Funny. Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis said publicly that they would like to have Odell back.

They had a room ready for himat Georgetown. They urged Odell to appeal Goodell`s denial

of his reinstatement.

If I`m judging someone bye their past, their most recent past holds precedence

over what happened a year ago, or back in College.

You should try it . . .

Same old sob story. Odell's had positive drug tests, a DUI, a missed drug test, and he doesn't show up for a parole hearing. He was also a known risk coming out of college.

Think about the two that he's skipped - a drug test that he knows will cause him to be suspended for a year if he misses it, and a parole hearing that will put him in jail, he skips both of them. Unless he can produce a dying relative on a deathbead, there is no excuse for that.

As far as judging someone from their past, how short of a window do you use? When someone's got a long history of being a moron, I'm not going to assume they've cleaned up their act based on their ability to not get arrested for a couple of months. Give me a break. Fact is, a person's past behavior indicates what they're likely to do in the future. I've never been arrested, never gotten a DUI, so I'm not too likely to start. Odell, on the other hand, has a long history of being a screwup, with no obvious end in sight.

At this point, him skipping his parole hearing is his most recent past, so I'll judge him by his complete lack of responsibility it shows that he can't even get to a meeting that will keep him out of jail. Like I said, unless someone's dying, it's no excuse.

You're right, Mike said he'd like to get Odell back. Marvin, on the other hand, was far more noncommittal, since he probably knew what the chances of getting him back actually were. Which, as I *correctly* predicted, was low.

This is inaccurate. Thurman has missed two drug tests which are counted as positives under the league's policy. He was arrested for DUI after failing a breathalyzer. He has been tested up to 10 times per month since being put in the league's program. He hasn't failed any tests administered by the league or tested positive for any illegal substances. Frankly he is being railroaded. Treating the DUI as a positive drug test under the CBA is ridiculous. The test wasn't administered under the terms of the CBA. Thurman is clearly unreliable as shown by not making it to camp on time last year or missing a meeting with his probation officer. He shouldn't be accused of being under the influence simply for missing a meeting.

I agree, it's just dumb. And by that I mean missing a meeting isn't evil, a threat to society, or something that a reasonable person couldn't understand or forgive. Let's not forget that before Odell was first suspended the Bengals offered a statement about how many team meeting Thurman had missed, and correctly speculated that he had missed a drug test rather than failed it. So yeah, another missed meeting is all part of a history that so many of you can claim to have predicted the last time you climbed up on your soapbox. But if some of you weren't so concerned with being a pious a**h*** we might all agree that Thurman is paying a very heavy price for fairly minor transgressions.

Then again, some of you want him to pay even more. Some of you want the Bengals to cut Thurman immediately, presumably because his very presence makes it more difficult for some of you to take your share of pride in the accomplishments of 53 other complete strangers, right?

Yes it was a joke.

I posted the smiley to show that it was a joke.

For the record, both sides of my Family were born and raised in Kentucky . . .

Don't worry, either HairOnFire or my wife (for all I know, they are the same person - similar sugary-sweet disposition, willingness to spend my cash, general disdain for me in general and my mental processes in particular, and all that) will find a way to prove me wrong.

That T.J. is the most disturbing thing I've read here all day.

I still think that Odell WOULD'VE been our #1 mlb, had he not been suspended... Brooks < Odell.

And with one flourish on his mighty keyboard, HOF makes us all look pathetic -- including himself. Isn't taking pride in the accomplishments of strangers what every sports fan does? Or does HOF have close personal relationships with the players? While I also enjoy HOF's flair for the dramatic, don't lose site of the fact that the joke is on us.

I'm aware that I too fall into the catergory but I think what HoF is getting at is we need to keep everything in the proper perspective. Everybody likes to get on their soapbox and get all holier than thou but we don't know these players or what they struggle with on a everyday basis. So before people start calling for elimination of Odell from the utopia that is Bengaldom they should take those things into account.

Or maybe he was just being a prick, who knows.

One of my favorite George Carlin rants is about how we're all just rooting for the laundry. To put a slightly more serious spin on that rant, we fans identify with the uniform so much so that the people wearing it become far less important than the colors. And because we can all walk casually into a department store and purchase those colors for ourselves to wear we frequently delude ourselves into thinking that we're actually a part of the team, a fantasy that is encouraged by team owners who accept our money in exchange for their complicity. Buy a ticket and immediately become part of the team, ehh?

It's all harmless fun, right?

Then again, it's becoming increasing common for a very vocal portion of the fanbase to openly root for careers being ruined over the damage done to the cherished laundry.

As for me, I'd say the joke is on all of us whenever we take undeserved pride in the accomplishments of the team. However, the joke most certainly isn't on me when we start talking about fans who willingly accept feelings of personal shame and embarrassment when players we don't really know do things that some people feel dirty the laundry.
