Initial thoughts...

...Mixed night for STs. Kick coverage seemed pretty good, Shayne knocked a couple deep for touchbacks, and he hit some long FGs (47, 48). But he also missed the game-winner. Skyler had a muff. Larson had a punt blocked. And we let them recover an onside kick. STs needs to keep shoveling.

...First team defense did a good job keeping the Lions contained and scoreless. The Lions seemed to have a pretty easy time running up the middle, tho.

...First team offense moved the ball on the ground and in the air, didn't allow a sack, bodes well for the o-line even without Levi and Willie. Failing to punch it in, tho, especially on the first drive, isn't acceptable. We settled for two many FGs last season. But overall the Bengals won the first quarter handily, which in this game was all that counted. The rest is school for rooks and subs.

...Big Toe certainly didn't hurt his chances to make the final roster tonight.

...Any word on Kenny's injury? :(

Key word in that sentence: "First." So much for the alleged depth we've been spoon fed.

Well, when you put young'uns all over the place you tend to get a lot of peaks and valleys. And we got a lot of newbies and second-year-rookie types all over: Ahmad Brooks, Hype Henderson, White & Nduke, Big Toe. They'll get better...probably.

I thought it notable that the first major defensive blowup of the night -- the 83-yard TD pass -- was coughed up by Keiwan Bustliff. Can we cut him yet?

my Thoughts:

-our O-line backups stink. They better never see the field. This year or next.

-I think Irons is hurt bad. Maybe out for the season.

-ST absolutely stunk. The onside kick recovery cost us the game. Bronze Graham didnt help either.

-and finally...our D is no different. They scare no one. No intimidation. No fear. Yes our secondary was awful but it ALL STARTS UP FRONT. They never came close to the Qb. You have to shake his cage and it NEVER happened. They threw at will! I know your gonna say it was vanilla D with no blitzing, but it was still 11 on 11. Your still allowed to kick ass on the guy lined up over you and get to the Qb.

Carson get ready to score 30+ per game. or else its not happening. Im sorry this is so negative but i found this to be a very depressing loss.

Oh, great...Hobson...

The one moment of true angst came earlier in the game when rookie running back Kenny Irons limped off the field on his left ankle after a seven-yard run and was then carted from the sidelines with unspecified left knee and ankle injuries after picking up 17 yards on four carries.

Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis told reporters after the game it's a significant knee injury and there will an MRI tomorrow. The fear of course, is that Irons may have suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate injury.

When Irons went down it conjured up memories of Ki-Jana Carter's injury on his third carry as a Bengal in his first game at Detroit 12 years ago. Irons got hurt on his fourth carry.

Keiwan was too busy still patting himself on the back from the previous tackle he made after a 5 yd gain. If that guy was 1/2 as good as he thinks he is, we would be alright in the nickel. I think Nbukwea was on that as well; actuallly I think he missed the play and went with the wrong read/WR.

Losing Irons will hurt but we didnt have him last year so you cant lose what you never really had.

I thought the first team D played decent, still too many big plays and broken coverages [especially in zone] and poor tackling.

Offense needs to work on pre-snap AGAIN!! Its unbelievable how many deadball fouls we have year over year over year and Marvin continues saying the same thing - we have to eliminate them. The funny thing is, its everyone, not just the OL - the WRs, TEs.

I say 10-6.

watching it now:

1st O series

Rudi, left side, 8-25 yards behind Andrews/Whitowrth…repeat all season

Bullocks put a lick on CJ…ruled not a fumble but Chad took a hard knock

Carson throws the finest ball in the NFL.

Rudi run, Andrews pulls and blocks nobody…gotta work on finding your man, Stacey.

Chris Henry looks very skinny…just cause you are going to sit for 8 does not mean you get to let off the gas in the weight room.

Overall – sharp, efficient, and poised.

1st D series

Wide-open middle running lane.

Madieu is an athlete. Flying.

DB’s look confused and tentative

Decent coverage forces a check-down…

Smith get to Kitna..nice hustle/coverage

Kitna throws a crap pass at the feet of the RB in the check-down…how many times have we seen that?

Overall – maybe average. I like the Smith sack.

Some thoughts about what I saw.

1.)Madieu Looked fine when he was in(RESIGN HIM NOW ^_^)

2.)Special teams look great Graham n Co are showing they still got it after 2 flukes.(why wasn't larson extended >_<)

3.)Skyler green should be moved to CB and then cut ratliff you won't have any drop off at cover skill but you upgrade return game.

4.)God o god do I wish Jjoe was healthy....Oneal looked like crap and ratliff looked like ratliff

5.)front 7 looked very good got good passrush played run well....(resign justin & landon :P)

6.)Bennie sure does have some jets, only saw 1 of mcneals catches but it was a very nice one

7.)Henry showed why he's always welcome no matter who he kills.

8.)Offensive line looked great for missing 2 key starters

9.)Why is Doug Johnson on this team and why is he ahead of rowe? atleast we get rowe experiance he needs if he's ahead of doug...Doug needs to hold a clipboard because if he starts in regular season were doomed anyways.

10.)Kenny got dinged bad? UG........................................

FIRST PRE-SEASON game!

Keep it in perspective.

D is all in zone prevent when Calvin was getting all his yards.

Yeah I noticed that, it still bothered me to watch... Hate when we run the zone

I think the run D will be good this year, Jeanty/Brooks/Smith/Peko are good against the run.

Marvin White looked good, Hall didn't look great (what bothered me most was when McDonald got him on an out) but JJ didn't look good last preaseason either.

I was happy with the OL, thought Rudi looked quicker today than last year, happy with what I saw from Madieu.

Overall less the Irons injury I think it was a good start to the preseason.

OH yeah... THANK GOD Skyler Green might actually be a solid PR. Better than watching Keiwan catch the ball and immediately start bouncing from sideline to sideline only to get no gain on a good return. I was very pleased that the ST coverage was able to stop Drummond... No easy task.

Positives: D-Line penetration was good all-around. Ndukwe is a hell of an open field tackler even though he has a reputation as a hard-hitter. Skyler Green has A LOT of potential. O-Line protection was great for Carson which is to be expected but after that....who really cares. Speaking of Carson: Robot-like. Henry really needs to get his suspension cut in half, I don't care if he looks like a damn ethiopian crack-whore he's got some spiderman hands.

Negatives: I'm liking the quickness at LB but they relaly need to learn to put on the breaks, I can't tell you how many tackles were missed by guys flying right by the ball carrier trying to do a close line. Secondary...... has a lot to work on, didn't really see anything from them except some blown coverages and under-utilized athletic ability. Watch the replay of Irons injury..... he hurt HIMSELF trying to make a cut, it wan't from the tackle . Doug Johnson blows. Rudi/Watson/Wilson are not going to cut it. What happened to the whole "Finish" theme Lewis has been pushing? I guess the sweet t-shirts weren't enough.

Edit: I take back the Irons comment. His cutting foot landed funny(inverted) which made it look like it caused the injury but i just saw a different angle and it seems the weight of the tackler on his cutting leg was most of the cause. My apologies and good luck in '08 Irons!

Looked like the play maker we were missing last season

Chris Henry looks very skinny…just cause you are going to sit for 8 does not mean you get to let off the gas in the weight room.

Um when doesn't he look like a skinny rod? he's 6'4 and weighs about the same as chad does...this isn't really new.

-our O-line backups stink. They better never see the field. This year or next.

I thought the backups who were in for the starters looked fine like Stacey & Kooistra

-ST absolutely stunk. The onside kick recovery cost us the game. Bronze Graham didnt help either.

Bronze Graham Diden't help? 4/5 is just fine his kickoffs were good as for the onside.wasn't their kicker supposed be a genius at onside kicks? ohwell shet happens it's preseason.

I Disagree I thought out frost 7 did just fine for starters..we did blitz we did bring pressure and we did well vs the run...what didn't happen was our cornerbacks covering people.

Carson get ready to score 30+ per game. or else its not happening. Im sorry this is so negative but i found this to be a very depressing loss.

Um 1.)It's preseason 2.)We were ahead till the 4th QRT 3.)OHNOES! Lions backups, backups, backups who won't make the final roster beat our backups, backups, backups players who won't make the team.
