Has anyone heard any new on where the Bengals stand in regards to signing their draft picks?

Probably the same place as always -- which is to say, waiting for the slot(s) to set it(them)sel(f/ves).

Nothing to be surprised at right now. Only a handful of day 1 guys, mostly 3rds, have signed.

Still, given the Bengals' history, it'd be nice to see Hall signed sooner rather than later.

I'll look and see what I can find on JJoe's foot, but you would have to think it will be sometime AFTER camp starts to get picks signed. That is if you are going by our past signing history !!!

EDIT: Couldn't find anything about JJoe's foot injury... I'll keep looking...

WHODEY !!!

I was @ Wal-Mart the other day and bought one of those boxes of cards next to the check out line and got a Leon Hall autographed card #'d out of 250. We could cut and paste the autograph to the bottom of a contract and get things taken care of now!

:sure:

That sounds like a great idea. We could also write in the contract a deferal of all his money to us Bengalszonians.

I am sure Hall's agent is waiting to see what Revis and Landry sign for to know what they can try to get out of the Bengals.

That's the way it always seems to work out. I just know that some agents will have their players hold out more than other agents do and didn't know if Hall's agent was the type to do so.

For what it's worth, Hobson put this out this morning:

LONG HOLDOUT SLIM: As of Thursday afternoon, not only had there been no first-round picks signed in the NFL but no second-rounders. So Doug Hendrickson isn't nervous.

Hendrickson, out of the Octagon agency, is Leon Hall's agent and Thursday from the Bay Area he said he's not concerned about getting a deal for Hall in time for the first practice of training camp on July 27.

He has yet to speak to Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn, the club's traditional negotiator for the top draft pick, but he has touched base with head coach Marvin Lewis in preparation for dealing with the 18th contract in the draft.

“We don't expect a hiccup,” Hendrickson said. “We've done deals with them in the past and Marvin's always great. I don't expect to start talking until after the Fourth, if even then.”

The Octagon football division, headed by the highly regarded Mike Sullivan, isn't known for messy first-round holdouts. The only extended one of note appears to be another cornerback, the Chargers' Quentin Jammer, with the fifth pick in 2002.

It is going to get busy for Hendrickson soon because he also represents running back Marshawn Lynch at No. 12. But he'll also be doing the deal with Sullivan.

“Usually the big things in these deals are the length and this is pretty cut and dried,” Hendrickson said. “The top half of the round is going to get six years and the next five, so we know right away we're starting with a five-year deal.”

“We've got a pretty good history with some very good cornerbacks,” Hendrickson said of a firm that just this week completed the Bears' Nathan Vasher's lucrative extension. “Leon has told us he wants to be in on time and that's what our plan is.”

Did a quick look at last year's deal for No. 31, Kelly Jennings of the Seahawks. Olsen's guaranteed coin is about the same, total money is about 11% higher ($9.7m vs. $10.7m, both 5-year deals). So if Leon Hall's deal slots in at about the same increase versus last years No. 18 pick, the Cowboy's Bobby Carpenter (who got $7.5m guaranteed and $12m overall over 5 years) then Leon ought to cost roughly the same guaranteed and a total deal in the $13.3m range.

  • 2 weeks later...

Steelers ink Timmons to a $15 million deal, which is apparently a hefty 19% increase over the No. 15 slot last year.

Pitt now has all its draft picks signed.

Cincy, meanwhile, has signed...umm...well, they signed a deal to have camp at Georgetown again next year...

With TC starting next Thursday it looks like there will be some holdouts.

Am I the only one who is really agitated by the lack of urgency in getting these guys into camp?

About a month ago, they had that "we're not worried about signings" thing going on, like it wasn't a big deal, we'd get it done. And now, there haven't even been signs of any serious talks. It's ridiculous. Do they think the practices aren't valuable or what?Other teams are scrambling to get their picks into camp, while we sit around like it isn't important. Just doesn't seem like the organization really knows what they're doing. I'm not saying that's how it is, but it definitely looks that way.

I don't know about "agitated," but it's certainly enough to make you wonder if anyone is home in the front office. Things do appear to be moving, tho slowly. While Curnutte snores, Kevin Goheen does some actual reporting over at the soon-to-be-defunct Post:

http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar.../707230312/1022

Representatives for the five players selected on Day 2 of the draft have all indicated that deals for their clients are progressing and should be worked out in time for the start of camp. Making sure first-round pick cornerback Leon Hall and second-round choice running back Kenny Irons are on the field Friday afternoon could be a little trickier.

Hobson echoes that in a Hobson's Choice column on the site today. He adds that what delays there are appear to be connected to the team's usual twigginess over escalators:

Of course, there's more to it than that, and much of the debate isn't over money but escalators. Particularly for the lower-round picks where the pain of singing a four-year deal can be lessened by an easy-to-reach escalator in that last year.

I look for the day two guys to be done on or before Thursday. Hall and Irons could stretch into next week.

On the subject of Irons, how much stock should we put into Ludwig saying that he has a chance to take Rudi's job? Is this a realistic possibility, or another case of Rudi being under appreciated?

It's a case of Ludwig smoking too much dope, IMHO. B)

In my opinion, noone is safe, which means if Kenny Irons takes advantage of his time, and proves he's can run like Rudi up the middle, and be quick enough for swing passes and outside running, he could win the job. The likelihood of this happening this season is about as likely as Carson Palmer losing his starting job to a rookie though.

Kenny might take Rudi's job since "Rudi is so lazy"
