Can Leon Hall beat out Deltha?

Recommended Posts

Johnny Josepth has the one CB spot locked up. But what are the chances of Leon Hall beating out Deltha O'Neal at the other CB spot?

I think Deltha will come into camp with something to prove and a new frame of mind. Leon is going to give Deltha a serious push which in turn make O'Neal a better player.

At least we won't have to see Tory James trying his best not to hit someone.

It really depends how deep in Marvin's doghouse Deltha is. Ideally, Hall will be starting by week 8, but not week 1.

I'd say Deltha definately has something to prove, but it may not matter if his frame of mind has changed. The selection of Hall puts O'Neals future in Cincy in serious doubt...perhaps immediately, but one glance at the price of cornerbacks in free agency should be enough to motivate O'Neal to have a solid season. In fact, amongst the reasons I was in favor of drafting 1st round CB's in back to back rounds is because I felt it likely that O'Neal would price himself out of Cincy if he continued to play at a Pro Bowl level.

Best, if O'Neal doesn't step up as expected then Hall is good enough to push him from the starters position fairly quickly.

I'm not sure that Hall will beat Deltha outright at all this season for some of the reasons listed above (motivated with Hall at his backside, free agency). However, Deltha has had problems with his health since he's been here. Even in his great '05 season, he battled through injuries quite a bit.

Hall serves as insurance that the Bengals won't be forced to start Oneil if he's not 100%. Hall won't be a huge step down from Deltha, so it gives the Bengals more depth, and more options to help keep the secondary healthy this season.

Agreed.

I would like to see Hall starting later this year as we know he'll open up '08 as the starter... We're best off to have Deltha out there early though and I think that will be the case pending if Marvin gets more PO'd at him.

But just think if it DOES motivate Deltha to work his tail off and he returns to his Pro Bowl / 10 int form of 2005. We have three top notch corners in coverage which makes this defense ROCKIN!

Yea ...

Deltha plays lights-out in '07, then we either have three top notch corners going into '08, or we are able to trade him for some real value in the off season next year.

On the day of the draft, Dave Lapham said Deltha had a case of the goo because the team was resigning all of the offensive guys but wouldn't renegotiate his deal after the '05 season. Hopefully Hall's presence and Tory's absence will jump start him again.

A Deltha O'Neal with something to prove would be a great thing and hopefully that's what we'll see. Honestly, I hope Hall doesn't get the opportunity to start this year, because that would mean Deltha was injury free and having a great year which is what everyone wants. Last year was awful with Tory James playing like he was and everyone screaming for JJ to get his shot and when he was in there, he made a lot of rookie mistakes. I really don't want to go through that again...let Hall learn for a year and bring him along slowly.

What was wrong with O'Neal's attitude last year? I didn't notice anything. All you guys keep talking about it but have yet to meention a ingle thing specifically.

All I know about Deltha is he played hurt all year.

Hangovers don't count as injuries.

Though that would be great to see on an injury report.

Huh?

Why else did they use a expensive nbr1 unless they expect Hall to be an upgrade over Deltha?

Marvin has said many times, nobody is given a job, he wants competition for every position. Exceptions are duly noted for the obvious characters. Plus this weekend he said some vets are likely to lose their jobs to this years draft picks....was he channeling to Deltha?

Lapham doesn't criticize many players, but he has said that Deltha's attitude in the LR was terrible. He thought that James poisoned Deltha with constant talk about how he was tired of football.
