Marvin at Florida Pro Day

Recommended Posts

Where he watched Reggie Nelson run a 4.35! Per NFL.com:

The players worked outdoors on grass in the swamp in ideal weather. There were about 100 personnle on hand, including Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis and Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, and quite a number of coordinators -- mostly defensive coordinators.

Defensive tackle Marcus Thomas was not present mainly due to his off-field problems. He is scheduled to work out separately on March 29 in Jacksonville.

Player Position Gil's comments

Reggie Nelson DB Nelson ran the 40 once in a time of 4.35 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-6 long jump, ran 4.15 in the short shuttle and 6.70 in the three-cone drill. Nelson looked very good in the drills and may well have improved his stock.

Earl Everett LB Everett ran 4.82 and 4.73 in the 40, 4.46 in the short shuttle and 7.39 in the cone drill.

Ray McDonald DE McDonald (6-3 3/8, 282) ran 4.89 and 4.88 in the 40-yard dash, 5.07 in the short shuttle and 7.41 in the cone drill. He also had a 29-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-6 long jump.

Do we HAVE to take a safety in the first?

If we take Nelson in the first, we will effectively be draft a corner, as Madieu will move.

I like Nelson plenty as a prospect, but I see little reason to move Madieu to corner. He wouldn't replace Deltha by any means, and I think he's way too talented to be a nickleback. He had a down year at FS, but I think he'll be fine.

Ray McDonald ran a 5.07 short shuttle? That is horrible.

So is Earl Everett's 40. But dang if both these guys can't turn it on on the field.

Surprised not see anything about Siler or Moss. Moss should've hit the weights hard every day since the combine to show he can add some strength in a hurry.

I agree. If we draft Nelson and he pans out for us then we are set at safety for a while. Safety has been an extremely injury prone position for us since Marvin got here, and, for once, we would have some depth at that position.

I wonder if the talk about moving Madieu isn't a result of concerns that he can no longer play FS. He hasn't been a physical player since suffering what was said to be a very serious shoulder injury, and a move to CB would reduce the pounding. Last season he repeatedly avoided contact by running around blockers instead of engaging them, attempted too many "drag down" tackles instead of blowing up the runner as he did as a rookie, and as a result was on the receiving end of more stiff arms than I'd like to count.

when dexter gets injured who do you suggest plays for him?

Duh, Tab Perry!

Seriously though, I think we could find a good option to stick behind Dexter for that purpose in the 2nd. I rank Meriweather only slightly behind Landry and Nelson, and a few combine beasts have moved into view as well like Eric Weddle.

If his shoulder trouble is really that big a problem for him, then it's hard to disagree. I hadn't heard anything about it being so severe until this offseason though, and I'm not sure how to differentiate fan speculation with a realistic possibility. If the Bengals have put any noteable amount of thought into the idea, his performance in training camp should be pretty telling.
