Early Mock Drafts

Recommended Posts

While I enjoy reading bio's on the potential first rounders (especially on the defensive side of the ball where we need help) I have a hard time getting too excited about the early mocks. Until the combine you won't have a gauge on a guy's true height, weight, speed and agility.

Think back to guys like Bunkley, Lelie, Moonshine Jones and others who saw their stock jump after great workouts. There are also guys like Clarett who have their deficiencies laid bare for all to see.

There are also players who are projected to be 1st or 2nd rounders by the mocks, but who end up in round 5 or lower. Think Shazor, Gabe Watson, etc.

Anyway, they are fun to read, but can you really put faith in any of them?

Well, with the Combine you have the workout warriors (Mamula). I think the whole exciting thing about the draft is how inexact it is. Players that did well at the college level don't always translate into great NFL players (Ryan Leaf). Also, it is just fun to make a wish list list of the players you would like to see on your team. Combine or no Combine, Mel Kiper can't even predict the exact order of the draft. There are too many variables to account for (trades, FA, perception of team needs).

I think the answer here is "no". The only thing all this draft talk is good for is that when draft day comes I have some idea who all these names are and can be duely surprised when the Bengals opt for Johnathan Joseph over Jimmy Williams, Andrew Whitworth over Leonard Pope, Frostee Rucker over Ko Simpson, etc, etc...

Just to tell you guys, My friend is step brothers with Reggie Nelson, Reggies step dad is his real dad, anyway he says he was talking to him the other day on the phone and Reggie said he doesnt think hell go in the first round, i told my friend he was lieing because he doesnt talk to Reggie much anyway but just though you guys should know. I dont even know how they wouldnt take one of the best safetys in the draft in the first round though.

Mayock waited him the 4th safety in draft...but nelson could also be looked at as a CB with his speed, since this years draft seems lack speedy corners.

Yeah ive met him hes pretty cool from what i remember(been about 3 years), but yeah id like to see him go in first round.

Just from a player perspective, I tend to pay more attention to earlier mocks than later ones. I've never quite understood this fascination with the combine workout. Shouldn't what the player did on the field be what counts? But the hype machine is what it is.

Really, tho, the trouble with mocks done in Jan & Feb is March. In other words, free agency. A team's thinking can change dramatically depending on who they land or lose. And in the Bengals' case this year, it's further complicated by the uncertain status of several other players, namely Pollack (possibly done), Odell (still suspended) and Henry (who could be suspended to start the season).
