Bengals really want justin back?

I'm not in favor of tagging Smith, but then again I'd much rather see the Bengals overpay for a very good player rather than wasting a comparable amount of money on a stupid practice bubble. Regardless, I think it's move no team can consider for very long unless they're supremely confident they can sign Smith to a long term deal before the end of next season. And why they'd think that after failing to get a done to date I have no idea.

BTW, anyone claiming Justin Smith is a tweener is pie-eyed stupid. :lmao:

Whatever, If he wants to live with the same horrible defense and not contending in the playoffs, be my guest. I'm not saying one player will change our team, but it will bring the "idenity" we need to our defense. I think that tagging Smith just isn't right. He isn't an elite player, he doesn't deserve $8.6 million.

It looks like Marvin is trying hard to be like the Colts, which is stupid IMO. Not every team with a horrible defense is going to win the Super Bowl.

Oh and for those looking at Daniel Graham, the Pat's might Tag him. I have heard rumors about that, being since they will prob. let Samuel go. I don't understand it, but hey it is what it is. We will see come Feb. 22nd.

At a guess, I would say that negotiations between the two sides remain cordial, and that there is a multi-year offer on the table that would put Justin among the top 5 DEs. However, that offer is almost certainly based on 2006 numbers, and probably just barely puts Justin in the top 5. With guys like Freeney possibly escaping into FA, those numbers could go higher.

So...Justin's camp politely demurs, expresses its gratitude for the team's generosity and a desire on the part of its client to stay in Cincy. The Bengals nod, leave the offer on the table, and start talking about the tag, which they fully intend to use.

I think it all comes down to who among DEs actually makes it into FA without restrictive tags, and what they get paid. And if there are some big contracts for a guy like Freeny, Justin's camp is going to want the Bengals to improve their numbers. OTOH, if no top-tier FAs shake free and no big deals get done, then we will see a long-term deal for Justin done, if not before FA starts then shortly after.

Justin Smith doesn't deserve being close to top 5 paid. Thats just what I think

Well his cap number atleast be more friendly in a long term contract then a franchise tag...

Yeah, and we aren't the colts. If we were, we would have two stud RB's and an exceptional TE. We would go out and try to get the Booger Mcfarlands.

Well we tryed having 2 stud RB's....but was rhoades consirdered a stud well edge was there?Te would be nice to upgrade I still wanna see us bring in graham and resign kelly.

If we end up tagging him I think that would officially end the talks about signing either Adalius Thomas,Asante Samuel or Lance Briggs...I would rather have us resign Steinbach though than Smith. We just payed Geathers millions and he doesen't even start. I would love to see Geathers and Frostee as our defensive ends next season.

BENGALS TO TAG SMITH

A league source tells us that the Cincinnati Bengals plan to slap the franchise tag on defensive end Justin Smith.

Smith, the Bengals' first-round pick in 2001, completed his rookie contract during the 2006 season, making a salary of $2.08 million. Under the franchise tag, Smith would be eligible for a one-year deal worth $8.3 million. The total becomes guaranteed if/when Smith accepts the tender.

But accepting the tender puts him under contract and compels him to attend mandatory minicamps and training camp. If he so chooses, Smith could skip all offseason activities and training camp and sign the tender on the eve of the regular season and still make $8.3 million, guaranteed.

Withholding services is the only leverage Smith has to force a long-term deal. The risk, however, is that the team will withdraw the tag after other teams looking for defensive ends address their needs.

Smith, 27, has played in all but one game during his six-year career. He bagged 7.5 sacks in 2006 and has 41.5 for his career, which equates to an average of just under seven per year

Predictably, PFT's rooting for Justin to play hardball.

Not really surprising if they're right about the impending tag.

Nah, PFT's scenario wouldn't be hardball. You really worried about Justin being out of shape or geting rusty because he missed to OTAs?

No, if Justin wants to play hardball...he will sign the franchise tender within seconds of receiving it. That instantly handcuffs the Bengals, and puts the pressure on them to work out a long-term deal to free up cap space. They should have enough to handle both Justin and their own FAs/RFAs -- but those guys could get more interest than they believe. This from Ludwig at the DDN:

The War Room scouting service ranks seven Bengals among its top 99 free agents.

They are Steinbach (No. 5), cornerback Tory James (No. 8), guard Stacy Andrews (No. 37), Justin Smith (No. 43), tight end Reggie Kelly (No. 56), linebacker Landon Johnson (No. 69) and safety Kevin Kaesviharn (No. 88).

Andrews and Johnson are restricted free agents, while the others are unrestricted.

If offers start piling up, and guys need to be matched or replaced, that big ol franchise tag will really start to squeeze.

The Bengals haven't told Justin Smith's agent that he'll be franchised.

"He would prefer not to be tagged but that does not mean at all he does not want to return to the Bengals," said Smith's agent Jim Steiner. Franchising Smith would swallow nearly half of Cincinnati's cap space

Nice find. Stripping away the filler...

(Justin Smiths agent Jim) Steiner said by e-mail today, "I cannot tell you whether they will franchise Justin. Obviously, like all players, he would prefer not to be tagged but that does not mean at all he does not want to return to the Bengals...Negotiations remain open. Dialogue has and will continue to occur over the next few weeks."

Things seem pretty calm. Like I said before, I suspect the Bengals have a good offer on the table, and Smith just wants to see if any other DE deals -- like say one for Freeney in Indy -- give him an opportunity to argue for a bit more coin.

If it was not broke, then I would not fix it(D)...this D is broke and changes are needed...JSmith is not worth 8mil a year, he is not elite, he is an average, consistent player worth about 4.5 to 5mil a year...If we stop drafting DE's and making them LB's we would be straight...If DPollack came back healthy they should switch him back to DE...IMO they should let him go, they can get someone else cheaper to do what he does...
