A horrible season, coming to an end

I agree! Disappointing? Yes! But horrible? Not in the big picture. Consider this

Carson was walking with a limp in June 2006.

Odell was heading out the door in June 2006.

Henry was facing mounting criminal charges in June 2006

AJ was dealing with theft issues in June 2006

Frostee was dealing with criminal assualt in June 2006

After all of that, Pollock goes down.

Chris Perry goes down.

Richie goes down

Levi goes down

Deltha quits on the team.

But still this team was in the playoff hunt controlling their own future as of 12/14/2006

From this point of view, the season has been a thrill. A pre-Marvin team would be 2-12 by now.

Of course changes must be made. Deltha is gone. Tory is a nickel back now. Linebackers don't scare anyone. Pass rush could be better. Carson needs to learn to find a running back or TE when the deep ball isn't there. Chad has to show up every game. Nothing Marvin can't solve. 2007 is a legit Super Bowl contender.

Horrible season? C'mon now.

I tend to agree with you here. It's not a horrible season, but with all of the adversity (many of it needless, i.e. 273 arrests) this team should have performed much better than it did - even with its tough schedule. I agree that injuries have definitely hurt us but every team has injuries. There is no avoiding them.

If the Bengals had made just one more play when they needed it on Sunday, we wouldn't be so down on them. But they didn't- even though they had more than 5 opportunities to bury them. That to me is why this will be such a disappointint season if they don't get in the playoffs

I wonder how a 4-12 season would be described?

As stated earlier, this season is a disappointment as the Bengals should have been in contention for the division. Atleast they have a shot at a playoff spot still considering what they have been through. No, this season was no a horrible season, just a difficult one with many peaks and valleys.

everyone is disappointed with how it looks the season will end -- but it's a little too knee jerk to say that it was a horrible season. there are so many positives -- if carson ends the season healthy that's a big win for us. there's lots to be hopeful about, lot's to be excited about this season. i'm going to be salty till march, at least, though.

Disappointing for all that could have been.

For everything that everyone has pointed out...

We were still right there...

1 pt loss to TB in the last seconds (we won't recap the officiating problems) groan

8 pt loss to SD, blowing a 21 point lead...

1 pt loss to Denver on a mishandled snap on an XPT...

2 pt loss to Atlanta after being up at the half 17-13...

I sure hope that this team will learn something from all this...

Deltha quits on the team.

What's the scoop on this? I hadn't heard anything until Curnette mentioned in today's article that there are rumors about Deltha slacking.

I agree that it wasn't a horrible season. It was disappointing, for sure -- they let too many winnable games slip away and continued to act like not-ready-for-prime-time players. But given all of the injuries and bad luck (and a little stupidity thrown in), this just had the feeling of another snakebitten year. Next year, with more luck in the health dept, Marvin tightening the ship, several guys growing and maturing, and a few key additions, they'll be a legitimate contender. They're not now, and I thought that at the beginning of the season.

Not to get into a "yes it is!", "no it isn't", "Uh huh!", "uh-unh" type of arguement, but I have to say that, for me, this IS a horrible season.

"I wonder how a 4-12 season would be described?"

That would be more horrible, of course, but youre missing the point. We should be beyond the mindset of the old Bungles, when 8-8 or even 6-10 was considered OK, all things considered (not by me it wasnt, but you see what I'm getting at). After all the rebuilding, finally bringing in top-notch free-agents, the turn-around in attitude, the reemergence of our fan base, drafting a quarterback in the first round who's NOT a bust, signing the best o-line in the league, etc., etc., and actually making the playoffs last year, my expectations are higher. Much higher. And as much admitted adversity as we went through this year, the Bengals pulled through and put themselves in the drivers seat. And then shot themselves in the foot. Again and again and again. Sorry, but I'm not satisfied with a 9-7 or 8-8 record plus missing the playoffs.

I personally think that theres more missing than an improvement at any one position. its the intangibles that champions have. And the Bengals don't have it yet.

O'Neal is always waiting for someone to catch the ball, then tackle them. He appears apathetic, too cautious, and always gets beat in the Red Zone. He plays with no heart. He and James have hurt the Bengals big time this year. Check it out, we're last in pass defense, and I think #22 has played terrific for a rookie, but the two former Pro Bowlers have looked terrible.

Horrible season my ass.

I had a blast this year. Ups and downs, happiness and sadness.

A horrible season would be continual downs. We were close to the playoffs.

We underachieved for sure, but with the injuries (Palmer coming back from a possible career ender, Pollack gone, O line decimated), self decapitations in suspensions, and our schedule....if someone said we would go 9-7 with all the crap we went through, I would say great, a winning season.

We held serve this season. Nothing more, nothing less.

Oh wait, we probably matured where it counted most. Yeah, we will be back, and the NFL will rue the day.

Rue it they will! Rue it!!!

Good Godamm, how long until the first preseason game?

WHO DEY!!!!

Well i for one just hope that this team will take this year and think about what all happened im not going to say its been a horrible year, but im just sick of saying oh well i guess next year, year after year. I hope this team matures and stops throwing hissy fits everytime somthing dosnt go there way. I hope that C. Johnson comes out and wants to play football and dosnt try to show boat himself, he is such a good player but he still has alot to learn. I hope TJ learns to control his emotions and not throw his helmet or get so pissed when things arnt going right. I just think there is alot to learn from this players and i hope they will take what has happend and take it to next year and mature and grow up as a team and play the like the players they are. Please no more arrests please.

You had me for awhile. In fact, I agreed with almost everything you said. But you lost me on the last line quoted above.

Without engaing in the teeth gnashing histronics that others seem determined to wallow in...(you know who you are)...I'd have to describe the Bengals as a team horribly lacking in maturity. It's a team that is top heavy with offensive players who too often describe themselves as superstars playing in an offensive scheme that may be the best and most explosive in the NFL. But the simple truth of the matter is this team hasn't accomplished much, and much of the blame for a series of late season collapses and big game failures rests soley upon the Bengals biggest offensive stars.

My take? The Bengals are an offensive minded team that is in drastic need of a new identity. The public face of this team needs to change from goofy comedy to pure smashmouth stuff. And more than anything, they need to mature...and they need to do it fast because they're bleeding away seasons and opportunities.

Yeah, I'm well aware of his poor play. I meant the "whispers in the locker room" bit that Curnette threw out there, I hadn't read anything along those lines this year. That's a pretty big accusation for a beat writer to make.
