CBin2k7 Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 What to do...in order to be successful against Denver.1. The o-line is going to have to contain Dumerville and Chukwarth on passing downs rushing from the edges. The Broncos rarely blitz their LB's. The o-line is going to have to step it up and play well. I think they will.2. Go with what got you here, be agressive. The Bengals must press the ball up the field, attack Denver's secondary. Other than Champ, they are average to below average in coverage. They can not match up with the 3WR sets. More of those would be great this game.3. Ditch the sweep, and counter plays and run straight ahead. Denver LB's are fast, and pursue very well sideline to sideline. You can make gains on them up the middle, but it all comes back to o-line and they have blocked very well in the run game this season.4. Be aggressive on D, force Cutler to make plays. Cover the TE's up the seam, Scheffler and Alexander get down the seams very well. Scheffler is big and fights for the ball well in coverage. The 3 and 4 WR sets from Denver are dangerous. They have Kircus and Marshall who can exploit a Bengals weakness in the nickel and dime. With the questionable availability of Javon Walker the Bengals may catch a break. Tory James should be able to stick to Rod Smith, but you never know.Bengals need a big game out of Madieu Williams.5. Denver's cut block scheme, be careful and play discipline. If they stay in their lanes, the Broncos wont gash them. Get out of the lanes and Tatum Bell could break some long ones. He has very good explosion through the hole and good cutback ability. The Bengals need to adjust quickly to playing in the Mile High City, and hopefully it wont' affect them. It's going to be tough. Stripes Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 I expect a strong game on defense. Marvin and Chuck/Leslie usually plan well against younger QBs, and their bread and butter is in the running game. The Bengals have frankly been lights out against the run for the last five weeks, and I expect the same this week. With the Broncos struggling to run the ball, Cutler will start to press and make mistakes.Offensively, we should be fine if Palmer has time. I doubt Denver's defensive line will be able to exploit Whitworth like Freeney did, and Levi/Willie should be on their way back anyways. Quote
ShulaSteakhouse Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 Oh yeah, in order to win? Don't devise that stupid defensive game plan of only rushing 4 and sitting back in a zone to keep everything in front of you. Breshnahan is clueless, and needs to be aggressive, blitz like they were for 4 weeks previously, and bring the safeties up to make plays and get them involved. Where the hell has Madeiu been all year? In coverage? Cmon Chuckie. Get more complex and confuse Cutler.I don't mind giving up big plays with this offense - the more the Bengals' offense gets the ball, the better. It's when you play that stupid prevent-zone defense and let the other team drain the clock and keep Carson on the sidelines that things go wrong.Last night was an abomination of stupidity by Breshnahan and he can't defend that garbage - go back to what was working the last 4 weeks. It's not brain surgery. And tell Chad to quit eating McDonald's and catch passes in big games. The o-line will just have to play better than it did in pass protection. Quote
kentjett Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 The game of the year, both teams have a lot riding on this game.Cincinnati Bengals can clinch a playoff berth with ... Win, Bills loss or tie, Jets loss Win, Bills loss or tie, Jaguars loss . And the Denver Broncos can clinch a playoff berth with ... Win, Chiefs loss or tie, Jets loss Win, Chiefs loss or tie, Jaguars loss Quote
schweinhart Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 What to do...in order to be successful against Denver.1. The o-line is going to have to contain Dumerville and Chukwarth on passing downs rushing from the edges. The Broncos rarely blitz their LB's. The o-line is going to have to step it up and play well. I think they will. After the speed they faced vs. Indy, they should. Dumervil still probably gets in once or twice. They also have to hold off the Browncos and both Ebenezer Ekuban and Kenard Lang will test the Bengals bookends. Hopefully Big Willie plays. Still, nothing pressure wise like the Colts brought and Palmer shouldn't go into deep freeze with the ball in his hands so much this time. He's fumbled the ball 14 times already this year and he needs to figure out how to find an outlet receiver or get the WRs to run more quick slants and crosses if pressure does start to lock him up again.2. Go with what got you here, be agressive. The Bengals must press the ball up the field, attack Denver's secondary. Other than Champ, they are average to below average in coverage. They can not match up with the 3WR sets. More of those would be great this game.Absolutely. But the Chris Henry vanishig act is something they can't wait on this game. If he can't get open or keeps dropping the ball, yank him and split the backfield or put in Glenn Holt as the 3rd. The Bengals don't have the luxury to wait for this idiot to decide if he wants to play hard and well this week or not.3. Ditch the sweep, and counter plays and run straight ahead. Denver LB's are fast, and pursue very well sideline to sideline. You can make gains on them up the middle, but it all comes back to o-line and they have blocked very well in the run game this season. This also sets up the play action well. Rudi has done a much better job this year catching the ball with his back to the D on dump offs over the middle. They should be able to use him there even if only to freeze a LB from a deeper drop. But this week it's back to the pass setting up the run. I'd like to see more I with Kelly as the lead because IMO he's a more agile in getting to the LB in space than JJ.4. Tory James should be able to stick to Rod Smith, but you never know.Bengals need a big game out of Madieu Williams. We'll see here but I'd say it's pudding time again. Cutler is a fast QB and if the Bengals overpursue on a 4-man rush, he could run for a 100. It might be harder for Cutler to read sliding zone looks and get surprised by the coverage of the LBs (so long as Simmons is not in or at least much better than he was vs. Indy). Of course, the Bengals might get tempted to rush him hard because this is only his 4th game and hope rookie mistakes take their toll. But I saw the TD throw he had on a naked boot left where he turned his body and set his feet in one quick hop and launched a perfect ball 65 yards in the air. They fool around with him too much or let too many holes show up in zone and Cutler might mince the secondary worse than Manning did.5. Denver's cut block scheme, be careful and play discipline. If they stay in their lanes, the Broncos wont gash them. Get out of the lanes and Tatum Bell could break some long ones. He has very good explosion through the hole and good cutback ability.Staying in the lanes is a must vs. Tatum Bell. If the Bengals D-line let's themselves get spread like they did vs. Pats, Bell could go for 200. They have to play him like they did Cadillac and keep the linemen close together. Bell's greatest strength is hitting the hole fast between the tackles and flying by the LBs. He'll probably get 20 once or twice but the Bengals got to keep him from burning them big or getting chunks too often. The Bengals need to adjust quickly to playing in the Mile High City, and hopefully it wont' affect them. It's going to be tough.Yeah, maybe Chad will be ducking out during the middle of the game for oxygen this time rather than fluid. It's going to be real tough and after what the Bengals did vs. Indy, we'll see what this team has got on the inside because they'll need that as much as what their abilities allow them to do. They have got to play much smarter and also be given better chances to succeed by their coaches. Quote
walzav29 Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 It does make me nervous that Denver has lost 3 straight at home. They are usually a good home team, and it seems unlikely they lose 4 straight at home. Each week is different though. They need to make Denver stop them, and I'll take Palmer in a shootout over Cutler. After 2 straight subpar games from Palmer he should have a good one soon. Better be this week.Spooky Stat is Marvin's record in his last 4 games.2003 - 1-32004 - 2-22005 - 2-22006 - 1-1 so far. If they go 2-2 again. Doom. Unless one of the games is this game coming up. Soon though Marvin will have this team finishing strong like the way he has made them start strong. Quote

Glad I'm inside! Depending on who you believe, downtown is supposed to get 2 feet, but it will be over by noon tomorrow. So it shouldn't affect the game unless Bronco fans start throwing snowballs at Shayne Graham and Shanahan has to get on the P.A. and say, "you don't live in Oakland...you live in Denver." On second thought...Shanahan's not that cool. Never mind. Quote

He has killed us all year. Look at all the times he has been beat; he has no heart and merely tries to keep up with the receiver to tackle them after catching their passes. James is getting kind of slow and tackles like an old woman. How did these guys make the Pro Bowl? Geez, they certainly have gone backwards. What happened to Miller? I don't remember seeing him play Mon evening. Every game he has started lately we have won. What's up, Chuck, why can't you keep the effective players in there and bench the ineffective. Quote

I didn't have a problem with not trying to scheme against Manning because it doensn't work. Teams have tried that and every time, he roasts them. The trick to beating the Colts is not to confuse Manning but to beat blocks and make him move around. Having said that, i DO think that we can try to confuse the rookie Cutler. He's talented and obviously has a strong arm (see last week's 65 yard TD pass). But he is still very green in this league and I think that we should take advantage of that. Secondly, I also agree that our strength is our ability to score, but you can't score if you don't have the ball. Hence the necessity to get our D off the field sooner. This means make some friggin 3rd down stops (can we please?), or get some turnovers. Here's to getting both in Denver on Sunday! Quote
