Bengals land three Pro Bowlers

By GEOFF HOBSON

December 19, 2006

3:40 p.m.

In the wake of their most disappointing loss of the season, the Bengals crowned three Pro Bowl players Tuesday as right tackle Willie Anderson and wide receiver Chad Johnson became just the fifth and sixth players to be named for a fourth time.

Carson Palmer became the first Bengals quarterback to go to back-to-back Pro Bowls since Boomer Esiason in 1988-89. Palmer, who didn’t throw a touchdown pass for the first time in nine straight games during Monday night’s 34-16 loss in Indianapolis, is still on pace to become the franchise’s first 4,000-yard passer despite throwing for only 176 against the Colts.

Anderson, who joined Hall of Fame left tackle Anthony Munoz as the only Bengals linemen on either side of the ball to go to four Pro Bowls, got word of his selection on the day he had an MRI on his injured foot that drove him out of Monday night’s game in the first couple of series.

Anderson and Johnson are starters and Palmer is a backup. Fullback Jeremi Johnson is a first alternate, running back Rudi Johnson and left guard Eric Steinbach are second alternates, and wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh is a third alternate.

Congrats to Willie Anderson, Chad Johnson, Carson Palmer.

We may have actually saved some money also, because Steinbach didnt make it, so maybe he wont get a lot of Big $$$ offers, he might be more affordable now.

alternate doesnt count,,unless some gets injured, but he's 2nd...so he needs 2 injuries.

Good job Carson ,Chad and willie its a shame T.J or Rudi could not get in

I honestly think TJ would have made it , if his injured heel didnt cause him to miss the first 2 games of the season. playing in only 12 games he has 77 receptions for 943 yards and 8 TD's.

TJ averages about 6.5 catches per game and about 78.5 yards per game......so had he played, and not had a Big game, rather, just got his average, and maybe 1 TD. His numbers would be "roughly" 90 rec /1100 yards /9 TD's

That would have gotten him to the probowl. Its probably worth noting, that TJ is currently Tied(with Wayne)

for 5th in the AFC in receptions with 77 (& only 3 less than Chad's 80) and has only 1 less TD (8) than Harrison and Wayne (9) with all of the other guys having played 14 games to TJ's 12.

Snubbin'? I can argue that K2 should have been named to the Pro Bowl team over John Lynch. Lynch made this years team based upon his past reputation....something K2 can't boast of. But K2 has had the better season.

Agreed.

It will be interesting to see if the Bengals can hold on to him. His age (31 by the start of the 2007 season) will work against him, but there's a lot of money in play this coming FA period. If they still have some of that injury reserve cap room laying around, he'd be a good target here in the waning weeks of the year.

John Clayton says that Brady was snubbed and that Palmer should be out

I just love Clayton's explanation.

But Palmer over Brady? Let's see. The Patriots have a better record and they beat the Bengals, 38-13, earlier in the season. Palmer's stats might be better, but Brady is a three-time Super Bowl champ who is on the verge of winning a division title.

I guess Brady should be in every Pro Bowl possible until he retires, because he is a three-time Superbowl champ.

Palmer is the 3rd best Qb in the league. I agree, Brady got screwed. You have to go with Rivers and Manning becuause of their teeams success. It's a toss up between Brady and Palmer. I guess stats are the most important. Oh yeah, and that chill SoCal attitude had to help too, Palmer is soooo cool! It's really just a popularity contest.

I'll agree with Brady over Rivers but not Brady over Palmer.

Uhhh, correct me if I'm wrong, Mr. Clayton, but aren't pro bowls mostly earned on stats? i didn't read the article, but I think that clip was enough for me

A friend of mine is going to the Pro Bowl. I was hoping Carson made it because he said he would take my Carson authentic jersey to get signed for me. Wow, I'm excited I just wish I could have afforded to go with him.

The only one I think on the Pro Bowl selection that I don't like is Kaeding the kicker. If you go by stats, there are a lot more deserving kickers in the league. In fact if you take away that ridiculously long attempt that Graham had that was something close to 60 yards. He only had 3 misses all year with having the second most attempts in the league with 27. If anyone deserved to get selected it was Stover out of Baltimore. He has missed only 2 kicks all year playing most of his games in that horrid Baltimore weather.
