Yeah, Jerry Rice's numbers are mind boggling, but let's not forget the fact that he stuck around way too long just so he could inflate them as much as possible. Not much disrespect intended, but the last time the Bengals faced Jerry Rice in a Raider uniform...(wait for it)...the Bengals matched up DE Justin Smith with Rice on nearly a half dozen short passing routes, and not only didn't Rice make them pay...he didn't catch a ball against Smith. And no, I'm not kidding. Quote

He couldn't bear to walk away, even though we wish we hadn't seen those Raider, Seahawk...almost Bronco Jerry Rice days.Hell, even if you only look at his 49er numbers, it's sick. Forget anything after that even happened. Quote

Grizz08 Posted December 1, 2006 Report Posted December 1, 2006 well you need yo realize chad has only been in the league since 2001... his rookie year he had 329 yards but since then in the past 5 years he has had 1,000+ seasons with 1166, 1355, 1274, 1432, 1146 yards if he stays in the league as long as jerry rice he could break it by that time since rice had 22,895 yards in 20 nfl seasons... hes on a good path but needs mabye a few 2,000 yard ones in there if hes gonna have a shot at tht record Quote
HoosierCat Posted December 1, 2006 Report Posted December 1, 2006 That only proves that Rice's career seems artificially long. He didn't really do much "padding" of his numbers in his latter years, did he?I wouldn't say Rice did much padding. Though he clearly hung on a few years too long. See:http://www.profootball-reference.com/players/RiceJe00.htmRice's glory years were from 1985, when he got started, through 1996. He put up 16,377 yards (72% of his career total) and 154 TDs (nearly 80% of his career TDs) over that span. He averaged 1,364 yards a year during that time, a number Chad has exceeded just once, tho he is on course to do so again this season. Still, as good as Chad is, he's no threat to Rice's record, IMHO.After 1996, Rice's play clearly tails off. However, "tails off" is a relative term. Even as late as 2001-02 he put together back-to-back 1,000+ yard seasons. If you want to consider that padding I suppose you could, but there are a lot of teams that wouldn't sneeze at a WR who could give them 1,000+ yards and 8 or 9 TDs. But by 2003 it was clearly over. In his last 3 years Rice would miss 15 combined games, reach the end zone just 5 times, and produce only about 1,300 yards total. Quote
bengalspride1219 Posted December 2, 2006 Report Posted December 2, 2006 chad has to do a lot more before u even start discussing thishes never averaged 100 yds a game like rice didbut hes lookin good this seasoni just dont think hes done enough to separate himself from the wrs todayjohnson has as big a chance of catching that record as steve smith or some other wr...
