Year 4 of the rebuilding process

A look at some "perennially good" teams...

Indy

(after 1997 season (3-13) draft Manning)

1998 - 3-13

1999 - 13-3

2000 - 10-6

2001 - 6-10

2002 - 10-6

2003 - 12-4

2004 - 12-4

2005 - 14-2

New England

(after 1992 season (2-14) draft Bledsoe)

1993 - 5-11

1994 - 10-6

1995 - 6-10

1996 - 11-5

1997 - 10-6

1998 - 9-7

1999 - 8-8 Tom Brady Drafted after 1999 season

2000 - 5-11

2001 - 11-5

2002 - 9-7

2003 - 14-2

2004 - 14-2

2005 - 10-6

So....

Bengals draft Carson and...

2003 - 8-8

2004 - 8-8

2005 - 11-5

2006 - ?

The lesson (I believe) is that there are some ups and downs in the process of rebuiliding and organization. Both Indy and NE did not get consistently good until year 4 or 5 of the process. So that is where the Bengals are now. Both the Pats and Colts had two losing seasons between year 1 and 5.

Yea i see your point, but i just get alittle tired of it all all the excuses i hear week after week, but the truth is that they dont go and execute the way there supposed to. Im just tired of loosing seasons or all the excuses why. Go out and play football like they are supposed to and they can win, but they have to put anything toghter.

Nice thread/comparison.

I think the most frustrating thing is we know we have a potent offence - QB, WR's, RB - all have ample talent/ability - just struggling to get it done. <_<

We know the D is a work a progress but when we consistently put teams in a 3rd and long situation and then get burned for a whole midden heap of yards - FRUSTRATING.

Draft picks have failed to make the grade

All that said they're our team, we'll bitch and moan when it goes wrong cos it hurts us as fans, but we'll stick with 'em. Hopefully, if your research is correct, we will be cheering a lot more for the next few years :sure:

Only a plea to all of us in our frustration to look a little beyond the current bad situation. I agree that this sucks and the team has definitely underachieved for a lot of reasons. but I am not making excuses, just trying to build a little bit of hope that this is NOT a return to the Bengals circa 1995.

I still think that THIS team will pull together and finish 10-6 if not 11-5. Like Marvin says, we are just missing by the thinest of margins. so to get on the other side of that margin should be achievable.

But the future is also VERY bright.

:bengal:

Some sunlight breaking thorugh the doom and gloom, so to speak. ^_^

I think it's interesting that so many Bengal fans have been slow to criticize an offense that failed to show up for half a season, and even now suffers from critical misfires and self-inflcted wounds even as it scores 40 points.

Obviously this is a result of having built up plenty of goodwill over the last few years, but it doesn't change the fact that many Bengal fans are now demanding Chris Henry be cut due to his dropping a tough pass, while TJ gets very little criticism for dropping a crital pass that was the easiest pass thrown to him all day. Again, it's all a question of how much goodwill you've built up, not a matter of what really happened during the game.

We play favorites, right?

There's no doubt the performance of the Bengal defense just cost them a game they couldn't afford to lose, but how many times could the same thing be said this season about the play of the offense?

But we like MOST of those guys, right?
