Just take a few moments and watch the couple videos on this website (http://playb3yond.com) right now the only videos up are the SMARTER and CAPACITY links but they do a very good job at explaining why the PS3 is going to be awesome.

EDIT:

Just additional facts I found to inform everyone that don't know the specifics of the system.

What is the primary format of media utilized by the PS3?

Blu-ray Disc (BD).

What is Blu-ray?

Blu-ray (BD) is a next-generation media format that delivers the ultimate high-definition entertainment experience. Just like the DVD format offered a technological leap over CDs, Blu-ray Disc™ is the next leap forward in the natural advancement of data storage and digital entertainment.

Facts about Blu-ray Disc:

* Blu-ray is an industry standard supported by the Blu-ray Association and it has broader industry support than any disc format ever launched; 85% of the CE industry, seven Hollywood studios accounting for over 90% of 2005’s home video sales, the two largest music labels, the world’s top computer brands and the leading gaming console hardware and software companies

* Supports five to ten times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs. In other words, one BD can replace five to ten DVDs (using 4-layer, 100GB BD)

* Blu-ray can hold 25GB per layer, whereas HD-DVD can only hold 15GB per layer

* Pristine picture quality with the capability for full high-definition resolution 1080p

* Blu-ray Disc recordable formats offer unsurpassed storage capacity to store your digital world (photographs, home videos, music libraries, and data)

* Blu-ray Disc gives consumers a smooth way to transition to high-definition by protecting their DVD investments; Blu-ray Disc players are compatible with DVD so existing DVD collections can be enjoyed on Blu-ray hardware

More information about Blu-ray can be found at the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Website blu-raydisc.com. (SCEA)

Why is Blu-ray important to gaming?

With Blu-ray, PLAYSTATION®3 offers game developers unprecedented power to express their creativity and a larger canvas to create a level of interaction, sophistication, and reality that has never existed in gaming. As a result, consumers can experience high-definition quality gaming for the very first time. (SCEA)

What is the Cell and how does it benefit the consumer?

The Cell processor is the digital soul behind PLAYSTATION®3. Four years and $400 million in the making, engineers from Sony, IBM, and Toshiba have developed a microprocessor unlike any that exists today. The Cell has up to eight Synergistic Processor Units (SPUs) or "nodes" to help balance the processor workload thus making it more powerful and more efficient than traditional "single-node" processors. With this increased power, game developers can create games that shift artificial intelligence to actual intelligence. Breakthroughs in fidelity, believability, and hyper-reality enabled by the raw power of the Cell processor provide limitless experiences. PLAYSTATION®3 is the intelligent gaming system. (SCEA)

What is HDMI?

High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is an industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI provides an interface between any compatible digital audio/video source, such as a set-top box, DVD player, an A/V receiver and a compatible digital audio and/or video monitor such as a digital television. (SCEA)

Accessories and Pricing:

* Wireless Controller (SIXAXIS): $49.99

* Memory Card Adaptor (for transferring game save information from PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 Memory Cards onto the HDD of PS3): $14.99

* BD Remote Control (Not available Nov 17th, but will be in Dec): $24.99

The first 500,000 units will include the BD movie "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” free. (SCEA)

What is the six axis motion sensing system?

The six-axis motion sensing system found in the new PLAYSTATION®3 controller employs technology that provides for seamless interactive operation, thus eliminating additional settings to TVs. With this system, users are able maneuver the controller in six different axis (pitch up and down, yaw left and right, roll left and right) as a natural extension of their bodies, all in real-time and with high-precision. (SCEA)

Will there be an HDD (Hard Disk Drive) included?

Yes. 20GB and 60GB models will be available. (SCEA)

How can you upgrade the 20GB hard drive?

PLAYSTATION®3 hard disk drive is removable and upgradeable. You can upgrade the drive by removing the hard drive and replacing it with a larger capacity drive. (SCEA)

How do the PSP® System and PLAYSTATION®3 work together?

The PSP can act as a remote control to PLAYSTATION®3. Additionally, you can transfer content from the PSP to PLAYSTATION®3 via memory stick or USB. Ultimately, the developer community has creative license on how they would like the PSP and PLAYSTATION®3 to interact. For example, in Formula One, the developer used the PSP as a rear-view mirror. (SCEA)

Can I still play my PlayStation®2 games, DVD movie, and CD music collection on PLAYSTATION®3?

Yes, you can play thousands of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2 software titles as well as your DVD and CD collection on PLAYSTATION®3. (SCEA)

How do I save my PlayStation®2 Memory Card information to PLAYSTATION®3?

To use saved data on a PlayStation®2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION®3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card. (SCEA)

PLAYSTATION® Network:

In addition to a wide array of software titles, SCEA has unveiled the online and network services provided through PS3, which will offer distinctive benefits to consumers and developers alike. Consumers will be able to enjoy a wide array of PS3 network capabilities, with basic features offered absolutely free from day one. Developers will benefit from the open platform policy of SCEA, which will allow them more freedom and creativity in the development of their games and online/network services. The end result will be more than just a place to play games, but a rich online environment with strong community aspects as distinctive as the titles themselves.

The entry way into PLAYSTATION Network is XMB™ (Xross Media Bar), which is the navigation system that enables a complete suite of entertainment experiences in three key areas: gaming; network and web connectivity; and other entertainment contents such as movies and music. The intuitive XMB interface, which is already featured on more than 20 million PSP® (PlayStation® Portable) shipped worldwide, allows PS3 users to experience multiplayer games across the network; communicate with other players via chat, voice or video; browse the web; download gaming content; store/view pictures and video; download and listen to music; and shop online.

Through the online PLAYSTATION® Store, consumers can find such items as game demos, game-related content and downloadable casual games, including titles developed by Sony Computer Entertainment World Wide Studios exclusively for download and play only on PS3, such as Blast Factor. Once users create a unique, secure PlayStation profile, they cannot only communicate with other PS3 users, they can also utilize an electronic wallet to purchase content in the PLAYSTATION Store. Downloadable first party games will cost less than $15 at launch. More content will be added on a regular basis. (SCEA)

And when it comes out you get to go to the store and put yourself on a waiting list <_< Good thing I grew out of the video game scene

Seems like the price tags just keep skyrocketing too... Good time to lose interest.

Does look cool though, J85.

Anymore these game systems are getting outragously priced. Definitely not made for the kids anymore. I used to be a huge gamer but as the prices keep going up and a little thing called responsibility...I just can't justify paying that much for a system anymore.

Time for Edogger to grow up...and unfortunately move on (Until the price drops :D )

If your an HD guy and a gamer like myself then the PS3 is a dream come true! The built in BluRay DVD player alone is worth the $600, look up BluRay players and you'll see. The wireless Bluetooth controllers, HDMI, Wifi connection, USB, and memory card reader is just too much to handle, not to mention the gaming power this sucker has. This system is worth over a thousand, 600 is a steal. Can't wait until NOV. 17th.

Edodge, If you get an HDTV I garuntee you'll want one of these puppies... Imagine watching DVD's in High Definition. I'll never go to the theater again.

I've got a 51" HD 1080i. The 51" might be overkill for gaming so I'm going to wait until the day after Thanksgiving and look for the best deal on like a 37-42" 1080i. 1080p's are just too much. If I can get a 37-42" for about 5-600 hundred plus the PS3 it'll be a happy new year!!!

Nice, overkill nah lol. I bet thats killer watching the game on. Yeah 1080p's are alot the cheapest ive seen was like $2500. Ive been looking at the ones they have at wal-mart, they have a nice 26" Sanyo for $647.00 http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4529481 pretty good deal. its got everything for a great ps3 experience.

Save your money on the Walmart deals. I've seen 32-37 for about that. Try HHGregg. I'm telling you, the day after Thanksgiving is the day you want to go buy a HDTV. Try HHgregg, SamsClub, or MicroCenter. You can get the 51" Hitachi HD with HDMI on sale from time to time at HHgreggg for $799. It's one of the older CRT HDTV's, but it's the best rear projection CRT available still. Here's a link to a forum about the Hitachi's http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread....highlight=51F59

Some day I hope I get to enjoy some toys like this. Right now it is saving up for our children's college and our retirement...and my mid-life crisis!

At the same token, I don't think I am quite the hard-core gamer I used to be. Granted, this might be because the style of the games coming out just aren't my as much style. But since I am not playing as much, I may not be as aware of what is out there.

Stupid chores and "Honey-Do" lists!!! But if I get them all finished now and keep saving...I can get one of the best home theater systems out on the market some day and it would be all worth it.

Can't knock on you for that. Kids are the future. I hope to send my baby to college some day. I still love the old games too but nothing will compare to this system. What I plan on doing is taking advantage of good old Walmart's Layaway. 50 a check and I'll have it in a few months. I bet you don't have any Honey-do list on Sundays!

Cool, thanks for the heads up. Did you see the PS3 commercial during the world series?

At some PS3 forums i read, this what someone thinks the commercial means.

1. PS3 represents the "mother of all consoles", that is why at the end of the commerical the baby calls the PS3 "mama"

2. The baby represents "Next Gen Gaming" , that is why you see the games inside the babies eyes.

3. You put them both together, The Ps3 is giving birth to Next Gen gaming.

Ok I thought i would shed some light on the games a bit.

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 3 will have 21 games available "through the holidays," which means anytime between the system's launch on November 17 and the end of the year. But that might only be the conservative estimate. Sony Computer Entertainment America president Kaz Hirai told GameSpot in an interview that he estimates that we'll see "upward of 30 titles or so between first- and third-party [publishers] for the PlayStation 3" by the end of December.

Aren't those comparisons a little misleading? You can buy the premium XBox 360 for $399 which is $100 cheaper than the base model of PS3 which has all those addons listed for the core already included.

not to mention no wifi, or bluetooth. I don't know much about xbox, but I don't believe there is HDMI or memory card reader (please correct me if I'm wrong.).

Hey Johnson85, Where can I pre-order a PS3 and make payments like layaway? I've been asking and noone seems to know anything.

B24, Blue ray disc can hold like 45 GB of data. It's the next gen of game development. If you want the latest and greatest then you'll want at least the HD-DVD drive with your Xbox 360, which is still minimal to the Bluray.

Put it this way: On a regular DVD game disc (which are the xbox360 games.) you can only fit about 12-15 GB's of data. Blue Rays can hold 45 Gigs (HD-DVD's can only hold 25 GB's). So on a game like Need For Speed which may have like 20 cars, the amount of space it takes for all 20 cars on a regular disc would be the same amount of data that a game developer can put into just one single car. In other words, One car on a blue disc could literally be 20 times the size of One car on a regular DVD disc.

If you own a HDTV and watch HD feeds you'll want everything possible in High Def, including DVD's. Dvd's just don't look as good on a HDTV with a regular dvd player. This is what is so appealing to us HD guys with the PS3. Blue Ray players runs about 800-1000 dollars. The PS3 is a steal when you compare it to HD-DVD players and BluRay players. Imagine watching DVD's at home that look better than they do on a silver screen at the theater.

Yeah, those BluRay discs are the way of the future, but it will be like every other system out there. By the time they get close to utilizing them to the fullest capabilities the next big game platform is going to come out. They never fully use the systems to show what they can do before unleashing the next beast.

I think I am going to wait until the price drops and the games are a few years in when they start getting close to what the Blu Rays are there to do.

yeah, but still you have to buy the HD-DVD drive which is $200, and the subscription to xbox live is $50, so still its $650.

Have too? Maybe the xbox live, but why do you have to buy the HD-DVD drive?

Blueray=Betamax and Minidiscs.

OK, let me rephrase that, you don't have to. But you do if you want to watch high def movies. The HD-DVD add on you wont be able to use to play HD-DVD games on, just movies. PS3 does it out of the box. They say the xbox 360 plays in high definition but its not in true high definition cause its not on a next gen format.. What Blu Ray offers to games is it allows developers to not have to worry about how much space they have to work with. They can create higher resolution textures, higher quality sound, all versions of the games on one disc and include all languages so there is one universal disc, all allowing for bigger more expansive environments to explore.

A little correction on the disc sizes of Blu Ray and HD-DVD to, Blu Ray has a few different sizes starting a 25 GB single layer disc, 50GB dual layer disc, and up to 200GB 8 layer disc. Sony has already said since developers are already filling up the 25GB discs (Resistence: Fall of Man is finished and is 16GB) that they will be switching the games to the 50GB discs.

HD DVD has a dual layer 30 GB disc.

Standard DVD is 4 GB single layer, dual layer 8 GB

Yeah it will take a little time but sites, like gamespot.com, and IGN who already have their PS3's say that the first generation PS3 games are already looking better than the 360s games. But imagine in about 10 years time at the end of the PS3's life cycle when devs fully understand the power of the Cell processor, the awesomeness of the games.

not to mention no wifi, or bluetooth. I don't know much about xbox, but I don't believe there is HDMI or memory card reader (please correct me if I'm wrong.).

Hey Johnson85, Where can I pre-order a PS3 and make payments like layaway? I've been asking and noone seems to know anything.

No your right i just forgot to add those... I dunno who is taking pre-orders toys r us just had theirs but it was only a one day thing cause they didnt have that many of them. What ever you do don't buy one on ebay cause people are buy them for like over $2,000 its insane... I can wait, and pay $500 or $600...
