membengal
Why would you want the steroid freak mentally unbalanced Sauerbrun when Larson has been absolutely nails all year and is about to enter his prime and be a top flight NFL punter? And, Henson? Seriously? Because this team needs MORE projects?
derekshank
If we cut Doug, I'd like to replace him with... nobody. We've got guys on this roster that I want to keep who will be cut or sent to the practice squas when Henry and Perry get back. If McNeal can serve us as a viable emergency QB, I'd prefer to do that than have a 3rd QB that we have no intention of ever getting into a game. membengal
A listing of Sauerbrun's misdeeds:The Denver Broncos released punter Todd Sauerbrun on Tuesday. Sauerbrun was eligible to return to the Broncos after his four-game suspension for using the supplement ephedra ended.Ephedra was placed on the banned substance list in the fall of 2001 following the death of Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Korey Stringer, who died from heatstroke on August 1, 2001 due in part to his use of the supplement.Sauerbrun has run into trouble several other times over his 12-year career. He was one of three Carolina Panthers players named in a steroid scandal involving a South Carolina physician who was accused of writing illegal prescriptions for steroids. He also ran afoul of the law in December of 2004 when he was arrested for drunken driving. He pleaded guilty to the charge in May of 2005 and received a $100 fine and one year of unsupervised probation. Why, exactly, would the Bengals need to bring this sort of insanity to a team already kinda at its tipping point with shenanigans? Especially given how good Larson has started the year? Plus, as you will recall, there was the whole Sauerbrun blood feud with the Gramatica family weirdness...a reminder:"An interesting postscript to the Bucs waiving kicker Martin Gramatica on Tuesday is that it highlights the only raging kicker-punter feud in the NFL. Gramatica missed three kicks on Sunday against the Panthers, who employ Gramatica's nemesis, punter Todd Sauerbrun. As SI reported in its Nov. 29 issue, the dispute stems to 2002, when Sauerbrun criticized Gramatica for his exuberant celebration of a field goal and the youngest Gramatica, South Florida kicker Santiago, taunted Sauerbrun outside the Panthers' locker room. After another '02 game Martin had to be restrained from attacking Sauerbrun. Two weeks ago the Panthers considered signing another Gramatica kicker, Bill, but Sauerbrun (who is also the team's holder) advised against it. Carolina signed Jeff Chandler instead. Still, the 10 Spot would advise Martin that he shouldn't work off his anger by attacking Sauerbrun unless his brothers are nearby. Martin is generously listed at 5-8 and 170 pounds, while Sauerbrun, a former All-America lacrosse player in high school, is 5-10 and a solid 215." Tasher
i dont think henson has shown anything since he decided he wanted to come back to footballSo the Cowboys cut him, he has worked out with numerous teams since then, got picked up by the Vikes and then cut again? That sounds like a future Hall of Famer to me! NOT!
BengalChamps
3rd string QB and punter are not huge concerns for this team.
agreen_112
I like Anthony Wright as the backup. Larson's been pretty good for us too. Those should be the last concerns by any Bengal fan watching the last couple weeks, we need defense.
derekshank
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2621335 Lionel Dalton would be a much more intriguing pick-up than either of the previous guys mentioned. As the article mentions... Edwards' defense is a one-gap scheme that places a premium on penetration. Dalton is more a classic, two-gap defender.Sam Adams is also a 2-gapper. I think Dalton would be an upgrade over Thornton... but we certainly don't have the roster space... and I doubt we have the cap space either. But for you guys who are freting over the run defense... this would be a good pick-up. Not sure who we would cut, but I am betting they will look at this one a bit. Also, I believe Dalton was in Baltimore when Marvin was there, so you never know. Not sure who we would cut, but I am betting they will look at this one a bit.If they take a look at it... it's going to be in the place of one of our DT's. We've already got 4. I don't think we can take on 5 at the expense of another position (except possibly Doug Johnson's spot). If we cut a DT, who's it going to be? Obviously not Sam Adams. We just signed him. Not Peko as a rookie with all his promise. Don't say S. Smith. He's one of our few young defenders that I'm hoping will eventually produce. The answer would have to be Thornton... and while I do feel that Dalton could be an upgrade... is it enough of an upgrade to justify? Is this the way we want to use our cap space? If we cut Thornton it'll save us $2mil in the cap... but $1.8 mil goes dead. I also have no idea what it will cost to try to sign Dalton. Combine that with the fact that Thornton is a current starter... so to replace him with a guy who doesn't know our system yet is at the very least risky. I don't see him as a big enough upgrade to make it worth the risk. He's the same age as Thornton, and we'd probably have to agree to a deal that last longer than the contract Thornton is currently under. I doubt we'll even seriously consider him. schweinhart
Dalton is garbage regardless of scheme. Johnathan Sullivan hasn't fared much better in the league but he's got more road ahead of him if he can tap any of the potential that made him a Top 10 pick just 4 years ago. They don't need a D-lineman in any event but Sullivan I wouldn't mind seeing. They got enough dead weight on the roster as it is, so dumping one won't hurt.I hope they steer clear of Derrick Strait while they're at it. He's a chump who makes Keiwan look good. Batman might have been a different situation, especially now that Greg Brooks is already popping back up on the injury reports again. derekshank
Dalton is garbage regardless of scheme.Do you have a basis for this opinion? I've seen some writer's say he has quietly become one of the most effective tackles in the NFL... but he still doesn't have big name recognition.I still doubt we take a flyer on him. This sounds like a perfect situation for Indy since they are now without Corey Simon for the year, and are one of the worst run defenses in the NFL. But regardless... I don't think Dalton is "garbage" because he has proven himself to be a good run stopping DT.

I don't think Dalton is "garbage" because he has proven himself to be a good run stopping DT.Other than no mobility for pursuit, not enough strength to shed even one blocker and no penetration, Dalton is great. On my long list of bad habits is watching free agents late in the season and much of my opinion was formed then about Dalton like it was with Ryan Pickett and Damione Lewis. Dalton is a 31-year-old journeyman DT who takes up space and that's about it.....dime a dozen with 1 foot already out of the league before the season even started. But Dalton did visit Cincy and Marv passed then. Not only did Marv pass but every other team in the NFL passed except for KC late because they had to make sure their targeted free agent DT looked over the injury bug that has plagued his short NFL career. Will Dalton get signed? Odds are greater that he will over other former Marv defensive players like Carl Powell, Kim Herring and Ifeyani Ohalete. But that's not saying much. If he does get a deal, you can bet it's 1 year at the vet min.

I didn't realize we had already passed on him. Chances are if we passed on him during the actual free agency period, we're not going to try to pick him up as an emergency pick-up for a position that we currently have no emergency need. Let Indy have him.
