schweinhart
AJ looked good in preseason but hard to imagine he see the field behind Odell, B-Simms or Landon. The reason I like him though over Wilkins is that he can actually play an LB position if needed and should get work at the strongside if Brooks can't contribute there. I can see AJ starting over Jeanty if they give him the crack at it and between AJ, Brooks and Jeanty, the special teams value of Wilkins ought to be covered if the Bengals opted to release Wilkins. But they can all stay by simply cutting the now-unecessary Doug Johnson. Seems like an easy choice, one that probably should've been done to begin with. McNeal can be the emergency QB but if needed going into the week as a KR or WR, activated and still be ready as the 3rd QB.
TJJackson
Can't cut Johnson til you know McNeal can run the offense as the emergency QB....we're probably a season away from that or more. I see Johnson on the roster throughout 2006Another possibility - didn't Wright sign a one year deal only? If so, if McNeal shows anything in practice this year, he'll battle for the 2-3 spot with Doug in camp 2007, and Wright will likely be gone
schweinhart
I don't know TJ...I kinda like the idea of the offense turning into "Run Reggie Run" if it comes down to a 3rd QB taking the field. The Bengals could keep Johnson but it will make no sense to me if they do over one of their LBs.
GapControl
Did anyone ever watch Doug Johnson play when he was a Falcon? The guy is incredibly inconsistent. He was basically a flop down there. I would rather have Reggie McNeal in there as a mid-season rookie than Johnson.

On the other hand, did you watch Johnson perform as a Bengal in the preseason? Did quite well in this system, no? Many fans (though not me) were calling for him to start ahead of Wright. At this point he's a far more proven Bengals QB than McNeal. I agree with TJJackson about Johnson being here all season. But as for next year, I'm with you -- I really hope to see McNeal at the 3rd spot on the QB depth chart! ArmyBengal
Agree with Walrus on this one... As much as I was against old Dougie boy, he played very well during the preseason and the thought of McNeal staying for the purpose of 3rd string QB over him, doesn't comfort me at ALL...WHODEY !!! Pretty inconsistent,Can Doug Johnson run 100+ yards in a game? ya vick is inconsistent as a passer but he makes up for it as a threat on the ground atleast mcneal would have that going for him. agreen_112
I don't know about putting the Rookie in at kick return in his first game, especially against the Steelers. We can't afford any rookie mistake on special teams.I say he'll get a few reps at WR. We may even see a trick play after we establish 1 end around. The next end around would be Mcneal, but instead of running he'll throw it up the sideline to either CJ or K Watson for 6!
Kazkal
Diden't tab return kicks in his first game? The bears are using a rookie kick returner and it's paying off quite nicely for them + kenny watson is back there too. derekshank
once agaist posting this link,Ya i'm fine with the idea giving him tab spot well he gets healthy.Yeah... he's definitely fast and quick. There is no denying it. The question is... can he do this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5km2kaWy7asHe's not the kind of guy who breaks multiple tackles like Tab usually does. He's just really quick and fast. Ask Santonio Holmes if returning kicks is the same in the NFL as college where he was so successful. He's doing absolutely nothing in kick an punt returning, because he doesn't break tackles. Let's see what McNeal can do with it. He's certainly a better pure athlete than Holmes... but we'll see if that translates into good kickoff return skills.Watching that Tab video, I can pick out 4 or 5 places that McNeal would probably have either gone out of bounds or tackled sooner than Tab was. Hopefully his pure speed will allow him to avoid the need for broken tackles.
Kazkal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXgf8n2nDxUnot quite tab returner I think he'd be more like hester.CLoset thing we have to tab would either be quincy or kdub (tall and big)

Kazkal
Ya but steelers special teams looked crappy early I don't want tab replaced I actually would like to see tab on this team for along time but hes hurt and we need someone else I don't think anyone on this team could have done the run like he did.hey mybe brooks can return kicks! he'd be tough to bring down
Walrus
He doesn't move like Tab, but it seems like he could fill a similar role with the ball in his hands. I hope they do use McNeal in the return game -- that certainly seems like his biggest opportunity to make an impact. And if he suits up on Sunday, I'll bet we see a reverse to Reggie at least once in the game. And if they're actually successful with that, maybe they work in an option play at some point this season...
Stripes
If T.J. plays, then I expect this to be a relative non-issue. Tab wouldn't have been able to make much a difference as a receiver anyways, and kick returns aren't of huge importance... As long as McNeal doesn't fumble the football. Kazkal
tell that to tab after he saved last years win vs the stillers
gbengals
I dont think this is really a big deal. It seems like Perry wont play this week so he might be in at ST.
walshfan
McNeal may see more action than we think if its true that Chris Henry injured his groin in practice as reported by Mark Curnette.Took Chris off the field in a golf cart.. Kazkal
henry isen't even marked as questionable no? all same perry and few of the other minor injurys atleast happens before the bye week so give them extra free week of rest and recover
bengalboomer7
So, does anyone know the answer to my question? Does he have to pass through waivers again? Can we replace him on the PS?
Kazkal
i'm sure he has go through waivers again (though doesn't matter if a team wanted him they'd pick him up soon as he was on the PS) And I'm sure the spot can be replaced too.
