The Pollack Injury Saga

Marvin just said the Lindsay did NOT write the email...

Marvin expects David back into the Bengals facility "by the end of the week, knowing David."

Looks like good news, all things considered. Said the David is "up and around, being David."

If it is true that she did not write this, and it was reported like that, well ... I think someone needs to be held responsible, starting with the writer. I just hate bad journalism, especially when it involves information related to something so much more serious than the game of football. Just frustrating.

Chad Johnson suffered a concussion late in the fourth quarter of Cincinnati's win.

One of the team trainer's had to drive Johnson home. Said Carson Palmer of his teammate, "He's a little loopy." Players often return from concussions without missing any playing time, but it varies depending on the situation

For those of you thinking long term... A broken neck doesn't necessarily indicate any damage to the spinal cord. These bones are used to protect the spinal cord... which is most likely why he will be placed on the IR.

The bone won't be completely healed to the level that it will satifactorily protect the spinal cord. The way he was moving around immediately after the injury, and was moving his arms around as he was carted off indicates that he was lucky enough to only suffer a bone break, and now will just need time for it to heal.

I expect him back next year.

The news on Pollack seems to be very good. I'm not at all worried about him as a person anymore. If the reports we have are accurate, it seems pretty clear that he won't suffer any long term damage form this injury. He has feeling and movement from the neck down... so he's not going to have to re-learn to walk or anything. It's just a matter of letting the bone heal.

He's probably quite relieved, and he should be... because a few more pounds of pressure, or a wrong move might have resulted in him being paralyzed. But he was lucky, so it's very good news.

Now the issue is his football career. Even if he doesn't require surgery and his neck heals on its own, it's probably going to be a while before he can remove the neck brace, which means it might be a while before he can resume conditioning.

This is obviously another step back for Pollack in his development as a SSLB. I'm wondering if this particular injury might effect him for more than just this year too.

There's always that mental piece of coming back from a big injury. But one good collision and he'll be fine, I think.

What I'm wondering is if this writes an end to the "Pollack moves to LB" story.

This very well could end his career. I think it might be the same type of injury that ended Sterling Sharp's career. Although Sharp had 2 broken vertebrae's that had to be surgically fused together is what ended his career short. They feared that if he were to to return to the field and take one bad hit that it would paralyze him forever. I really hope that Pollack doesn't require surgery and can make a comeback for next year, but a broken neck is really bad. I can't think of anyone who has returned from that type of injury... Please tell me that someone can name a guy.

All I read was that it was "severe trauma" - won't need surgery and a halo should correct it with time.

Lewis stated it wasn't career-ending, so will take it for what it's worth. Pollack is one of those 1st round picks that didn't work out.

No Braham or Dexter next week either. Braham does indeed have a "deep bone bruise" so who knows when it'll get better.

It sounds like TJ and Levi should be back next week at least.

They'll be ok. Braham and Dexter's seasons aren't over by any means.

Hopfully it doesn't :( least we know he'll stay in shape and not turn in to 300 lb slob heh

The bigger concern would be losing muscle mass. He's a big guy, and I agree, he won't let himself go... but there is only so much activity he will be permitted to do. It takes about 6 months for a bone to heal. He will obviously be given better care than the average person... but I have no idea how much he will be permitted to do in the meantime. If he's not permitted to do anything for 6 months, he won't have much time to get back into football condition. We can only hope for the best.

will see you never know.

Marvin told me one day that Thurman wasn't suspended and then the next day, boom, gondo.

I think what Marvin says and what actually happens are two different things. I hope the reports are true, but Marvin will protect Pollack the best he can... including putting people at ease to think of other things. I respect that. I just don't believe him....

I remember the Reds 2B D'Angelo Jimenez who now plays for Oakland broke his neck in a car accident. It's obviously not football... but it didn't effect his ability to be athletic.

First of all, I'm grateful that there doesn't appear to be any injury to the spinal cord. Whether Pollack plays football again is secondary to just being able to live a normal life. Injuries to the spinal cord around the C-6 vertebra could result in at least paraplegia if not quadraplegia. I believe injuries to the spinal cord at C-7 and below will at worst only result in paraplegia. Regardless of whether or not I'm remembering my medical stuff correctly, Pollack is very lucky man and he should take it very slow while letting things heal. I could care less about if or when he's able to come back to football.

I don't expect a lot of information to come out regarding the injury. We don't have word on the severity of the break, only that the C-6 is broken. We will only hear vague status reports in the coming days, but I'm not ready to say that his career is over, although it may be. A lot depends on the severity of the break and what happens in the healing process. There was a defensive back that played for Clemson who broke his neck in a game and was out for the season. If I recall correctly, I believe that he was medically cleared to play football the following season, but he opted to not play. Also, didn't Rich Gannon go down with a broken neck? In his case, I believe that he healed up, but he too opted out of playing football. He'd already had about 17 years or so in the NFL, so it was time to retire anyway. The reason I mention this is because it seemed that the players recovered and were medically cleared to play again. However, I don't know of a case of a young NFL player having a non-paralyzing broken neck. There was the famous case of Mike Utley breaking his C-6 and C-7, but he had spinal cord damage as well. I could see Pollack back in tiger stripes next season. I can also see him sitting at home on a Sunday afternoon. In either case, I will wish him the best and a speedy recovery. :sure:
