Tasher
There is a article off the Team page on ESPN that JJ may be closer to starting than we think...October 3, 2006Whispers from around the NFL Pro Football Weekly is hearing that Bengals CB Johnathan Joseph will supplant veteran Tory James at some point soon. • There's a sense in Cincinnati that rookie CB Johnathan Joseph will overtake veteran Tory James at some point during the season. Joseph has played so well that he's becoming harder and harder to keep off the field. http://sports-att.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=cin
SkinneymulleT
Man can he run and suprisingly can hit for a corner. Great tackler. He is big too. Big enough to play safety and tackles well enough. He needs to be on the field all the time, at corner or safety, although I would suspect that safety is out of the question, in that he is still learning and I dont know if they want to expose a stud to the abuse ss takes. So yes, Tory is old, prone to cherry picken, and he should gracefully step into the nickle role and play out his days here.
Sox
I don't believe that Tory could play safety. If he can't tackle at CB,he'd be a huge liability at safety.IMHO,Tory has lost a step, and gambles and gets caught looking into the backfield to compensate. The D isnt even clicking, do you really think its the corners fault?

The D isnt even clicking, do you really think its the corners fault? No. The poor run defense the last 2 weeks isn't Tory's fault. He has been something of a scapegoat for th overall poor defensive performance. However... his play has not been impressive in the last two weeks either. So, is the bad defense against New England his fault? Probably not... at least not only him... but that's not really the point, is it? The real issue isn't about whether James is washed up, or if he's still good enough. The question is would Joseph be an upgrade... and all signs are pointing to yes. jditty47
how are all signs pointing to yes? cuz joseph has a few pass defends? does he have any INT's? how about any FF's? or any FR? sacks? anything besides tackles and pass defends? look hes doing great at nickle. lets not overwhelm the rook, moving him to corner would be a huge mistake. mark my words... The really good CB's don't even get thrown at... so they don't compile stats, so lets not go on stats. Let's go on play.I've watched all the games, and I've not seen Joseph get taken advantage of, despite his being a rookie, and despite the fact that he has to make a lot more reads at the nickle position than he would if he was just lining up man to man like Tory usually does.Tory on the other hand has been abused. Explain it however you want... but Joseph at this point is the better athlete, and is in no way a liability in his ability to cover well. Given his speed and ability to run in step with even the fastest WR's, I think the change is coming sooner than later. In the past there has been no one challenging Tory when he's had slow starts. Now there is.If I'm wrong... feel free to bring this post up to me in week 8 or 9 and show my stupidity, but Joseph has been nothing but impressive, and Tory has been embarrassed on several occasions. The coaches won't continue to play him just because he's a veteran forever.
jditty47
his brains keep his starting spot - not his veteran status. ya hes probably gambling too much, which will be corrected. he wasnt being thrown upon so he was able to gamble more, im sure marvin and bresnehan have seen this and will correct it in their playcalling. but i still like james as the starter through the entire season and playoffs, and having joseph stay the starter at nickle. cant beat that depth, and james as the starter is the only way to have that depth. in our defense, stats do matter. turnovers are critical to what we do. do u disagree? HoTbOy
Derekshank I agree 100% TJames has been noticed just about as much as our poor run D...I would welcome a switch at CB in a heartbeat, JJoseph can be no worse than what we have now...I watched KK on Sunday and continue to be amazed at how he is on the team, he really sucks out there at safety...to see him get stiff armed like that on the 1 TD run was pathetic... I guess I forgot that Joseph lost his hands in a farming accident and can no longer catch INT's. Wait... that was one of the things he excelled in college. Even if Tory is a better "interceptor," what is the cost we're willing to pay for that? You mentioned yourself that he gambles too much. Without him gambling, he doesn't get INT's. With him gambling, he's giving up huge plays.Besides... if his brains are such an advantage, that would indicate he's even better suited for the nickle. You have to be more aware of the entire defense and reading what the offense is doing in the nickle spot.I'm not saying we make this move now... but I am saying it's coming. Joseph has far too much skill for Tory's 33 year old legs to fight off all season.
Stripes
Tory's done. I don't like it, he's been a solid pickup for the Bengals since he came on board. But he's done.
ArmyBengal
I echo TDB here... I have loved Tory as a CB for the Bengals and was happy when we got him. However, change always comes and for Tory, that time is almost here...WHODEY !!!

derekshank
I'd say Tory can keep his starting job as long as he stops looking into the backfield like he did on the critical early 3rd down play against the Steelers. Yeah, Braylon Edwards abused him late in the brown game, but despite his slowing wheels there aren't THAT many NFL wideouts who can just blow right by him. That's true... unfortunately one of those WR's that can blow right by him comes this week in Galloway.http://bengals.com/team/matchup061015.aspJames is under supreme heat for his lack of tackling as much for his lack of coverage in the New England game, so no doubt Gruden is going to go after him. Galloway has five catches of longer than 20 and two came last week from Gradkowski. But James is going to have to come up with some sure tackles on the short stuff. If Tory plays poorly against Galloway, it might be the last game he starts with Steve Smith coming to town the following week.
