ChadJohnson-85
Anyone think Peko will be a starter by next year? Peko plays like a 1rst rond pick IMO & JT might not even be here next year. Who Dey!!!
Stripes
Yes. I think he could be a starter by the bye week or sooner. Thornton played well, but he'll be on a short leash with Peko right behind him anxious to get in and play.
DCKRIMMER
I like JT but everytime he's near a fumble he just wants to fall on it. Pick that damn thing up and run with it. Peko, in college, showed his athleticism by returning a fumble 70-80 yards or so. JT may have experience but Peko's desire to get to the ball is unmatched. JT will be replaced by next year. That's when players drop the ball before they can secure it properly and end up costing their team a takeaway.
derekshank
The great thing about this D-Line right now is the depth. We come in waves, because we keep guys fresh. Peko is a great guy to have behind both Adams and Thornton. I don't want to see Thornton go, and despite how great Peko has played, I don't want to see him forced to take a larger role yet. He's doing so well in the role he's in. Let's just give him some time to continue to develop his game. In the meantime, we can keep Adams and Thornton around so that our depth will remain great. This is why our D-Line looked so good Sunday. Because our guys stayed fresh, while their O-Line got tired.
AMC
It's not so much who starts but who gets the largest % of snaps. Peko will get his share all year.We have a very nice rotation going...

Peko will get his share all year.We have a very nice rotation going... Yep... and I'd like to keep that nice rotation as long as the cap allows us to. This means I disagree with everyone who wants to kick Thornton out the door. Maybe Thornton wasn't the great solution to our D-Line woes... but he is certainly part of the success we have now. There's no reason to let him go. He's playing well, and he's not getting paid so much that it hurts us in the cap.John Fox (Panthers Head Coach/Great defensive mind) claims that other than the QB, there is no position on the field that impacts the game more than the DT. We need as many quality DT's as we can fit on the roster. Adams, Thornton, Peko, S. Smith is a rotation I want to see stick around for a while unless we draft another very high quality DT next year. Tasher
The rotation has a BFGuy in each set, so JT has to stay next to BigSam. Then Shaun spells both occasionally.Nice rotation and keeps us very deep to defend any play in any situation.Putting both Peko and BigSam in together weakens the other sets in teh rotation, or plays the BFGuys too many plays and tires them out going sideline to sideline. ArmyBengal
Depth is a wonderful thing and the last thing we need to do is compromise that while trying to maintain some continuity on a defense that is finally getting its legs under it !!!WHODEY !!! coupdayta
Yes, Peko will be the starter by next year. If I'm not mistaken, this is the last year of JT's contract and he's already making 2 million-plus a year. There is no way we resign him. Furthermore, we should draft another DT in Round 1 IMO in case Big Sam only makes it back for another year.
ArmyBengal
Once again, I don't think just dropping, adding, and moving players around is in the best interest of the defense, but Marvin is going to do what Marvin is going to do. (I know, master of the obvious, but I'm just saying)...WHODEY !!!

Thornton's signed through '08... and would be a $4 million cap hit if we cut him next year.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy he's signed through 08, and doubt that he would get cut regardless, but 4 mill seems a bit high. What was his signing bonus for when he signed? What was his signing bonus for when he signed?I guess it's possible that the source I checked is wrong... or that I'm reading it incorrectly... but I assume that "Cap Value" means how much it will count against the cap if he is released. If that is not the correct way to read this, I'd appreciate someone to explain it to me... because that is the only thing I could figure that it meant.http://bengalsjungle.com/salariesdl.html
HoosierCat
JT had a $5 million SB initiallly, so that's spread over the 6 years of his deal, coming off at a bit more than $833k annually. So to get his cap hit you add his salary plus that prorated bonus number. If we cut JT after this season, there would still be 2 years of prorated bonus left, which would go immediately vs. the cap. So that would be a little under $1.7 million. Keep him and his cap cost is a bit over $4 million. So we'd pick up about $2.2 million in cap space.OTOH, we would also have to fill a hole at DT then, and even a cheap aging vet DT type will run you $2-3 million a year; a rookie or journeyman would still cost anywhere from league minimum to a mil or two.I think the big question about JT will come in 2008, when it's $800k to cut him and $4.3 million to keep him.As for Peko, considering he's firmly established in the rotation now, I argue he's pretty much a starter already. That makes sense. That will be a good question in '08... especially depending on what we continue to get in the draft. If we can continue getting Peko type talent in the 4th round... Thornton is gone in '08... but that is doubtful. Thornton is playing really well right now, so cutting him next year doesn't make any sense, no matter how well Peko plays. We need the depth... but after 2 more seasons, questions regarding his value will be legitimate. Time will tell... but for now, I want to keep him until his contract ends. There's plenty of cap space, so there's no reason to cut him for any reason but talent... and right now it doesn't look like we'll have 4 guys more talented than him.
