At the risk of belaboring the obvious, it will come down to 1. stopping Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzales, 2. harassing Trent Green, 3. protecting Carson, and 4. opening holes for Rudi.

The Chiefs have some talent at LB and in the secondary, but their d-line is iffy. Our o-line ought to be able to create room for the run game. One guy to watch out for is rookie Tamba Hali; I'm sure they will send him Palmer hunting early and often. Hopefully, the Bengals can get the run game going and force the Chiefs to keep a safety or corner up near the line.

TG really worries me more than LJ. The Bengals historically suck at stopping talented TEs, and elite ones like TG usually eat our D for lunch. Best way to stop him IMHO is to get some pressure on Green, which might force them to keep TG in for pass protection. With an unsettled KC o-line, the Bengals just might be able to do that. Hopefully Pollack's hammy is good to go at game time, this looks like a contest in which an elite situational pass rusher could put multiple notches in his belt. Justin Smith could get his contract year started off right, too. And hopefully Jumpy Jr. continues his preseason ways.

Yeah... the O-line woes of the Chiefs should impact their pass blocking more than Larry Johnson, since the guys they are missing from last year are their OT's. It will be interesting to see if our pass rush really is improved. If we can't get pressure on Trent Green, we may be in for a long year again.

My personal opinion is that Robinson will have his way with Kevin Sampson and his 1 career start. I also think that Pollack shouldn't have much trouble getting to Green... but the real intriguing match-up will be Smith against Turley. We'll see if Turley is really back, or if his back problems/weight loss will give Smith a career day.

Gotta love Herm Edwards...

Press conf today (clips on NFL Total Access, too)

Reporter: Coach, you, this team (KC) played Cincinnati in the last game of last year, what can you take from that game and put it to use for Sunday?

Herm: Nothing. Not one thing. This team was trying to get into the playoffs, Cincinnati had won their division and was in the playoffs and if anything, I'm going to take out of it... Marvin will use this as a, really as a way to motivate his football team, cause I know Marvin pretty well. Really, you probably did some things in that game that you shouldn't have done, you know, that'll motivate 'em. I'll leave it at that.

Hoo Wah!

Herm should good a big cornucopia of Bengals football come Sunday. :bengal:

The Bengals are catching the Chiefs at the right time and Larry Johnson shouldn't find the running so easy against an improved D-line facing an O-line that has to be in some disarray. The Bengals got some options to offset Gonzales but I'd expect him to be the Chiefs yardage leader. He's too big and good not to cash in against smaller defenders. Hopefully the likes of Madieu and Dex Jack can ring his bell early and often.

I got doubts that Chad and Housh will have big time games in this one. The odds are good that the Bengals O-line gives them lots of time to break free for Carson to find them, but I'd expect the 3rd receivers to collectively get the double digits in receptions.

And it's high time for a lighter Rudi to reel off a couple of long gainers. They'll probably need them to keep the Chiefs honest in the box.

Bengals 24 Chiefs 21

I think we hold Larry Johnson under the century mark. The Chiefs offensive line is in perfect shape for the Bengals to dominate. They're still strong on the interior, but that's why we have Fat Sam now to take on the double teams. I expect a big game for John Thornton and Justin Smith against the run.

If we can get a consistent pass rush (still a big "if"), the Chiefs passing game will struggle too. If it weren't at Arrowhead, this would look like a sure-fire blowout to me.

Aye and with pollack, jeanty, geathers going in for sacks on 3rd downs we should have some nice passrush

I also think that the addition of SAdams makes the difference in this game, their WR's don't really scare me, but as HC said the Bengals have trouble stopping talented TE's ala DClark of the Colts last year...if they could I would have MWilliams on TGonzales all day...let the Chiefs revamped line try and win the game...no running lanes for LJohnson means the play action pass doesn't work...Bengals 24-Chiefs 13...

Given the shakeup of the Chiefs O-Line and the loss of Tony Richardson, I would expect to see more 2 TE sets from the Chiefs with LJ as single back. The Bengals will have to jam Gonzales with Landon Johnson but how far downfiled they let Landon go it alone vs. Gonzales on vertical routes remains to be seen. Hard to imagine they don't drop Landon off and let one of the safeties take over deeper coverage. Anything underneath with Landon trailing Gonzales and it's important for the safeties to come up fast and hard.

Run wise, the 2 TEs obviously stretch the line and give less time for the Bengals to shoot the right gap with right player to stop LJ. But as long as the D-line holds the line, they should limit LJ's ability to one cut and run for big chunks. As long as both OLBs stand up the TEs, B-Simmons and the safeties should be able to get to LJ in the hole. The problem I see will be the weakside. If they run straight at Justin or crack block down on him with a TE it neutralizes his strength of backside pursuit vs. the run and should free up LG Brian Waters to kick out into space where he is one of the best blocking LGs in the league.

Hali is going to be matched up against Willie. I don't think a rookie is going to have much success against him.

I keep going back and forth with having JJ in there for O'Neal. I just don't want to see a close game lost due to him having a moment like he did against Green Bay when Driver caught the TD pass !!! I know he has to learn and there is a bit of excitement about it, but concern is a good word to describe my feelings on it...

WHODEY !!!
