chrishcovga Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Palmer gets nod; Joseph third corner August 30, 20062:55 p.m. Quarterback Carson Palmer will play “some,” in Friday night’s preseason finale in Indianapolis, but head coach Marvin Lewis wouldn’t specify how much at his Wednesday news conference. Lewis did say that Palmer didn’t have any major problems with soreness or swelling. He did say that rookie Johnathan Joseph has nailed down the nickel cornerback job, meaning that the first-round pick is going to line up in the slot when the opponent uses more than two wide receivers.I'm glad to see the rookie playing well, but didn't Keiwan Ratliff play his butt off this preseason. He gave up some plays, true, but He seems a better fit to cover guys in the slot and Joseph seems better suited to cover guys on the edge ?? - What do you guys think..??? Quote
Stripes Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Keiwan headed to a surprise cut? Hmmm...Doubtful, but I do like this move. Our first round pick is going to be an early contributor for once! Quote
derekshank Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Joseph took the spot from Ratlif, just as I predicted the moment he was drafted. Now he only has to be impressive there for a few weeks, and the rest of my prediction that he takes over for Tory James around week 6-8 will be complete. Quote
ChadJohnson-85 Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Who was that who told me that Joseph wouldn't have enough playing time to get ROY? Who Dey!!! Quote
derekshank Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Who was that who told me that Joseph wouldn't have enough playing time to get ROY? Who Dey!!! He would still have to win the job from Tory pretty early to get that many plays. guys who win rookie of the year often start from week 1. Playing the nickle back will only get him playing time on passing downs... and that's just not enough playing time. Quote
schweinhart Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 No suprise about Joseph. I'm waiting for him to be named starter next.I doubt Keiwan would be cut given Bauman was IRed. But Keiwan looks pretty much limited to a zone route jumper in the dime. He can't hang with quicker WRs or TEs out of the slot. Keiwan is sure handed as a PR but that looks like about it. For all the promise he showed in 2004 as a PR, he showed very little ability to get upfield last year. Now with Chat in, Keiwan's load looks less and less by the day. Quote

Ratliff will still be valuable on this team for the dime, and next year as our nickle when Tory James is no longer with us. Quote
membengal Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Playing CP makes me nervous this time around. Quote

Clark wasted Keiwan for one long gainer IIRC. Of course, the O'Neal/Ohalete blown TD play sticks more in the mind like an anvil. I'd like to see the Bengals absolutely shut down Clark this year and they do have a better chance with Madieu back, Joseph able to play the slot and Dex Jack running around. But there remains some value for Keiwan in the secondary It just appears to be getting less. Maybe he vies again for nickel if James is gone next year. This year, there's really not much chance of turning him loose. Greg Brooks is still a wildcard and Body showed why he doesn't get much CB action on Monday...not that Body can't keep up but he needs some work tracking the ball. Quote
BengalByTheBay Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 I didn't see the Buffalo game, but I think Rat is just too much of a gambler. I think his cover skills are somewhat weak and they're grooming JJoe with as much PT as they can right away. Rat still provides much-needed secondary depth IMO, so I would be surprised to see him cut. Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 I know he did it once and the verdict is still out, and I've said this before. Keiwan is a perfect safety. He's good in run support, tackles well, and plays best in zone coverages where he's out in space. He could be a great "interchangable" safety. Quote

Jonboat Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 I agree Ratliff gambles too much as we seen last week he vulnerable to double moves & pump fakes etc. I like the idea of Ratliff as a back up Safety/ CB. Quote
Kazkal Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 He should be the 4th safety and have that his main postion but then be a backup corner only when needed. Quote

Then why did we have no run support last season? Why did we go get Dexter? I think its fair to say Rat can be a safety in a pinch, but he's not ideal size to play it well. As I listened to Marvin's press conference, I didn't hear a ringing endorsement of Rat. The guy won't get cut this year, but I think the clock is ticking for him for next season. Quote
Stripes Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 I'd rather have Indiana Jones on the field at safety if it comes to that than Ratliff. He's just too slow to be very much good in run support I think. Quote
Kazkal Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 How many years rat have left ? trade him to the pats + Kdub for graham lol Quote
Stripes Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 How many years rat have left ? trade him to the pats + Kdub for graham lolSay that during draft week, and I'd have probably been in full agreement... But now, I don't like it. K-dub has managed to stick with the team for a long time despite fighting over his job with so many talented guys.... and I don't think a tight end upgrade would be worth the loss in depth to our secondary. ArmyBengal Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Can't say as I'm upset one bit !!! Ratliff has been pissing me off ever since midway through last season. One of his INT's in preseason this year was due to Joseph coming on a blitz that any chimp could have picked off. There was talk on the .com site that someone was interested in the services of Ratliff. Seeing as how the Pats secondary is hurting, maybe a trade could be made for their TE Graham... Seriously though, I don't want to see Ratliff go, I just want him to do better !!! The depth he provides is his greatest value at this point !!!WHODEY !!! Quote
