COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Maurice Clarett was arrested early Wednesday after a highway chase that ended with police using Mace on the former Ohio State running back and finding four loaded guns in his sport utility vehicle.

Officers used Mace to subdue Clarett after a stun gun was ineffective because the former Fiesta Bowl star was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Sgt. Michael Woods said.

"It took several officers to get him handcuffed," Woods said. "Even after he was placed in the paddy wagon, he was still kicking at the doors and being a problem for the officers."

Police planned to charge him with carrying concealed weapons and other counts, Woods said. He was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed, then was moved to the Franklin County Jail.

Wearing tan jail-issue clothes, he talked on the telephone in the booking area, separated from reporters by a window. He was to be held at the jail at least until an arraignment Thursday morning, unless his attorneys work out an agreement for his release, police said.

Clarett made an illegal U-turn on the city's east side and failed to stop when officers, in a cruiser with lights flashing, tried to pull him over, Woods said.

Police pursued Clarett onto eastbound Interstate 70 when he darted across the median and began heading west. Clarett drove over a spike strip that was placed on the highway, flattening the driver's side tires of the SUV.

Clarett exited the highway and pulled into a restaurant parking lot, where officers removed him from the SUV after he failed to obey numerous orders to exit the vehicle, Woods said.

After Clarett was placed in a police van, officers discovered a loaded rifle and three loaded handguns in the front of his vehicle.

Woods said he did not know where Clarett got the guns or why he had them, and that federal authorities plan to trace their ownership.

The 22-year-old Clarett is currently awaiting trial on two counts of aggravated robbery, four counts of robbery and one count of carrying a concealed weapon in a separate case. Authorities said he was identified by witnesses as the person who flashed a gun and robbed two people of a cell phone in an alley behind the Opium Lounge in Columbus in the early hours of Jan. 1.

Messages seeking comment were left Wednesday morning for Clarett's attorneys in that case, Nick Mango and Michael Hoague.

Clarett scored the winning touchdown in the second overtime of the Fiesta Bowl against Miami to lead Ohio State to the 2002 national championship, the school's first since 1968. But that was the last game the freshman played for Ohio State.

He sat out the 2003 season after being charged with misdemeanor falsification on a police report, then dropped out of school. He sued to be included in the 2004 NFL draft and lost in court.

A surprise third-round pick in the 2005 draft, he was cut by the Denver Broncos during the preseason.

I heard he was smuggling those guns to Cincinnati to supply Chris Henry!

Even so, all Chris Henry wants to do is wave them around. He was probably also smuggling the bulletproof vest for Askew to protect against being tazed.

I heard he has a new model of the whizzinator for Peko too! It has nothing to do with beating drug tests, it just helps you pee!

Dang, what a waste. NFL player to wannabe gangbanger. Great....

Ohio State vs Miami Hurricanes, 2003 BCS Championship. What a game. What a runner Maurice was on that night and that season.

He'll be having years of uninterrupted time to remember that game as he sits in prison.

I ask, where's JIM BROWN? Did Brown, more or less, push Clarett to go down the NFL path? Honestly, if Clarett remained at OSU, he would have had a much better chance at a successful life. But I question Jim Brown. Where is he? Why did he let this kid go down this path and not "savior" him?

Jim Brown is an ass-clown.

I said the same thing the last time he got into trouble. Jim Brown is nothing more that a sports version of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharton anymore. Ride the coattails of the latest black athlete getting jobbed "by the man" When the well ran dry, Jim Brown took off. Jim Brown is one of if not the greatest running back of all time. Jim Brown the person.....not so great.

Jim Brown = great, great RB, possibly the best ever, but a dimwit as a person and a wife beater.

As someone mentioned above, it seems they might've stopped Clarrett from going on some sort of killing/shooting spree with that vest on and 4 loaded, automatic guns loaded up in his car. I can only imagine what exactly he was up to. Bank robbery? Shoot out? Serial killing spree?

Jesus that guy has truly ruined his life already.

I agree with you ,but one clairification. Nowhere did it say they were Automatic Weapons, Shotguns and a Semi-Auto AK47 all of which are perfectly legal if you dont have a felony record AND DON'T have them loaded in the front of your car AND Don't run from the Cops etc.

I'm not sure what he was up to, but your average man doesn't doesn't carry several loaded guns with a bullet proof vest on unless he's about to do some seroius s**t. Maybe he was just an extra for the new "Miami Vice" movie (I hated that show all my life just because my dad's name is Don Johnson and i couldn't order a pizza in all through the 80's)

BTW, I'll never forget him stripping Sean Talyor(I think it was him)

We all make our own decisions, including whether or not to take advice from men like Jim Brown.

And really, you think he would've done much better as an undergrad? It's not like his crimes are being funded by a NFL paycheck. And what is he doing in Columbus anyway? Besides committing crimes, I mean. It's been two years since he dropped out, why isn't he back in Youngstown?

Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Tim Mitchell requested a higher bail in court this afternoon, saying Clarett was found on Brice Road about a block away from where one of the robbery victims lives.

Ah, never mind.

But with the body armor and all the guns...maybe he's been watching Jim Brown movies.

Being in college would have given a better support structure then him flying to LA and getting with the "rap industry" crowd. Perhaps, just perhaps, sticking through the initial turmoil and remaining at OSU would have saved him. So yes, I really think it would have benefited him to remain. Read this Tom Friend piece on ESPN.com. I'm not saying it'll make you happy with an explaination into the guy's mind -- which seems in bad shape now. I'm saying this all could have been prevented if he never got bad advice to leave college and quickly become what he became. It was around the moment AFTER the national championship game where his story gets really bad.

I'm not saying you should feel sorry for the guy either. I understand a lot of people get all riled up when some kid gets a chance at a great oppritunity we didn't come close to having. But this is his story, not ours. I don't think this is a black and white deal. Maybe I'm just that naive to believe there's more to the story than "kid go wrong" and perhaps, just perhaps, his mind is just that sick right now. Personally, I feel sorry for him as a man and a father. Not as a potential football player we'd end up booing anyway if the Broncos came to PBS.

Anyway, I think it's a good read.

True, but it seems he was worried about getting killed. All the money he came across in the rap industry wasn't going to get paid back. Therefore, either in just his mind or for real, he believed he and his baby daughter was in danger of repercussions.

I think his story is going to get bigger sooner or later. It's not just about a kid building a surplus of weapons.
