bwillycuse
8 months of painstaking rehab with the goal of defying all odds to start the season vs. extremely lucky/fortunate in escaping death/serious injury in a motorcycle accident not wearing a helmet because he forgot it in the basement.I really think the nation knows which player puts more into their training and development. We all know its not Ben - heII it was even reported he falls asleep during film.More Heart lol
ArmyBengal
Homerism at it's finest, just like most team forums, but if that's what it takes to sleep better at night, let'em be. Who really cares ??Most everyone will admit to Ben being a good QB (as I will), but at the same time realize the Steelers won the Super Bowl in spite of Ben's play at QB, not because of his play.Little story about my last trip...I was in El Paso and ran into this Captain who was a HUGE Steelers fan. The terrible towel, the footballs, posters, you name it, it was in his office. (Sort of like me with the Bengals)... However, I immediately told him I was a Bengals fan and of course we went back and forth for a few, then the funniest thing came out of his mouth when I said Carson would be back for the starter... He said, "F*CK" and "I'll tell you if Carson had a defense like ours, the Bengals would be unstoppable." He went on to say how Ben is a good QB, but is no where the caliber QB Carson is regardless of the SB win. He was by far the most unbiased Steelers fan I have ever met...WHODEY !!! BengalChamps
Bengal/Squealer QB comparisons go back for years. Everyone always wants to use Win-Loss record to determine who was better but that is not fair. A QB cannot not play defense or be the RB. Example:1. Bradshaw had the Steel curtain but everyone thinks he is better than Kenny Anderson. THERE IS NO WAY BRADSHAW WINS EVEN 1 SUPER BOWL WITHOUT THAT DEFENSE. Kenny was actually the better QB.2. Kordell Stewart survived for years because of his defense. If Jeff Blake had a decent defense and running game, he would have been easily recognized as the better QB.3. The Palmer-Worthlessburger situation is the most obvious of the 3 comparisons. The leader for the squeelers has been hines, bettis, and porter. Dont look at how good those 3 are and then decide that Toothlessburger is good. CP is MUCH, MUCH better. As much as i love CP, he will not lead the Bengals to a SB. We must have a D!! BigBenBlows
Well when you only throw 12 passes in a game and run the ball 40 times you are going to look good. If Ben really had to play as a true QB he couldn't do it. Prime example in the super bowl who threw the TD to Hines Wart. Not big Ben but Randell El. I know I'm stating the obvious but that thred pisses me off.

I hate to admit it.Then it would go to the undefeated Miami Dolphins team. Then it would go to the 49er's with Montana and Rice. I hate to admit this even more. Then the 70's steelers. I really hate admitting this.
Stripes
C'mon now, some of us are being homers in here just like the guys on stillers.com.I don't think there is any doubt that Ben Roethlisberger has developed very quickly into one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Sure, he has been aided by the team around him, but he has gotten it done in the clutch many times. He's a great quarterback.Carson Palmer is also a great quarterback. We all know why, we watched him play every week last season. Let's not act like the Steeler homers and give credit where credit is due, eh?BOTH of them are among the best, and both of them are still young. BengalBillyBob
Palmer and Roethlisberger are both great QB's. If you don't think they are both top 4 or 5 in the NFL you are crazy or biased one way or the other.Palmer sat and learned for a year, played decent in his 2nd year, and then had a GREAT 3rd season.Roethlisbeger had the best first 2 years for any QB ever. 98 QB rating, 27-4 record with a SB ring, how can you knock him.Palmer has a better arm than any QB in the world, Roethlisberger has a knack for making something out of nothing and winning in the clutch. The team that wins more will be the team with the better D and run game, and for the past 3 years that has been Pitt. I don't understand why everyone on both sides feels the need to knock the other team's QB. They are both GREAT and could have one of the best QB rivalries ever if they stay healthy. HoosierCat
A recent classic from duus...“I hate Pittsburgh. I don’t like them. I don’t like their colors. derekshank
This doesn't really have anything to do with the quality of QB he is, but I recently heard a funny story about Big Ben.I work with a guy (for the record, he's not even a real football fan - so he has no hidden agenda) whose sister plays basketball for Miami (Ohio). I asked him if she knew Ben Roethlisberger. He said she did, but only casually. However, Ben apparently spends a lot of time in the off-season at the college trying to get girls.Apparently while at a restaraunt near the school, Ben was hitting on one of her friends, and she turned him down. His response was "Are you kidding me? Do you know who I am? You should be bowing down to me! I'm Ben Roethlisberger!"Regardless of who history determines is the better football player, I think it is clear that Palmer is the better human being. ArmyBengal
This is like Carson's injury...When Carson got hurt, Steelers fans more than less acted like classless assh*les. When Ben got hurt, Bengals fans more than less acted pretty well in regards to Ben's health. Now, that's not to say niether side had assh*les or classy people, but one had less class than the other. On that note, this is not to say that Ben is a bad QB and raise Carson to be the "Best of all time". This is to say that if Carson has a defense the caliber of the Steelers (compliment there), he would clean up. If Ben had to play with the walking sh*tball of a defense we have rolled out the past handful of seasons, he would do far worse than Carson and in my HONEST opinion, would be lumped right about midway with all current starting NFL QB's.To claim he's top 3 based on the fact the Steelers won the Super Bowl is homerism at it's best. Hell, Manning, Brady, Culpepper, and McNabb would all be ahead of Ben at this point in time. Of course I believe (based on my argument) that Carson is better as well, so that would put him no where higher than #5.That is not a slight by any stretch of the imagination. Top 5 is freakin great in my mind, but I'm sure there are just as many Steeler fans that would be insulted by that, because they don't have the capacity to believe anyone could be better than them.Just another example of Steeler fans taking an argument to an extreme. I've said it once and I'll say it again, the Steelers won the SB in spite of Ben's play, not because of it. Need proof ?? Go relook his stats. Yes, I'm aware stats don't win or lose games, but they sure weren't helping Ben for the majority of the season.... His defense was !!!WHODEY !!! On NFL Live a couple weeks ago, they said if he comes back 100% he might be #1. I don't hear anyone talking about Ben like that except Steeler fans. Just some food for thought. I tell people I'm ah omer, and I don't apologize for it. As long as people know that I'm a homer to begin with, they're usually fine with it. The difference between me and a Steelers fan is that they don't think they're homers. They believe they're objective, and it's just plain silly... because no unbiased observers really think Ben isa top 5 QB.From my perspective, he certainly top 10, but that's it.As for my homerism... Palmer is #1 on my list. He got more physical tools and skills than Manning, and he's always level, the greatest strength of Tom Brady. In my opinion he's the perfect mix of both of those guys. He has both strengths. But then again... I'm a homer.

As you say, "The difference between me and a Steelers fan is that they don't think they're homers." Precisely. You know what's sort of funny and sad at the same time? When I first read this thread (and the message board quote), I simply thought to myself, "So?" Not because I don't see the problem, but because I am surely becoming numb to this stupid fanbase. I have heard the stories, the theories, and the excuses. They are all the same. As DS says, they don't even think they're being complete homers ... they actually think they know everything about football and that their collective opinions somehow represent football's inherent truth. Say it again Carson!“I hate Pittsburgh. I don’t like them. I don’t like their colors. I don’t like their fans.” Yeah, me too. Me too. The guy has done it all and has MAD poise in the pocket. Yes, I see Carson being at and above that level and if it's this year, I'll be more than happy. Manning is great as well and if he would have won at least one SB, many would put him at #1 as well. (As if they don't already)... There is a difference in being a homer by loving your team and players and then there is the homer that takes it that one step beyond stupidity. For example, fans that would make the claim that Kitna is the best QB of all time. Now while that may be homerific statement made by a fan who enjoys Kitna's play, it is also borderline mentally retarded !!! Perspective is a good thing !!!
