bwillycuse Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Written by:Michael David Smith30. CincinnatiLast season Marvin Lewis built his defense with small and fast linemen, which is odd considering that his greatest success came in Baltimore with two enormous tackles, Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa, on his line. Lewis signed Adams as a free agent this off-season, but the 33-year-old Adams isn't anything like the 27-year-old version who won a Super Bowl ring with Lewis in Baltimore. End Duane Clemons played well last season, but he's currently a free agent and the Bengals haven't expressed any interest in bringing him back. Starting end Robert Geathers isn't much of a pass rusher and gets lost on running plays. The other end, Justin Smith, also gets lost on running plays, but he gets good pressure on the quarterback.I know we didn't have a good line last year but at least talk about a player that played more than 6 games and had more than 12 tackles.Duane Clemons.....lolWe'll be better than 30 Quote
ArmyBengal Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 I attribute this to the fact these guys haven't played a down yet and there have been big changes. 30 isn't a slap in the face at this point, hell, we've earned that !!! All we can do is hope things on the line work there way out and if they do, 30 will be a distant memory !!!WHODEY !!! Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Once again we choose to knock on a guy for the simple fact he wrote some unflattering comments about our Bengals. here's a news flash guys.....OUR DEFENSIVE LINE SUCKS. It sucked all last year, and i don't think enough has been done to make it stop sucking.I'm a Homer too, but JEEESSSH! Quote

I wrote about him mentioning Duane Clemons played well, when Clemons only saw action in 6 games. SheeshDo you agree that Clemons played well last season - He was a big factor wasnt he. Is he on the team right now. Why is he mentions at all?Dont respond if you dont like the thread. Quote
JaxonFord87 Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Our defensive line is going to continue to suck in the eyes of the media until we prove them otherwise. Quote

It sucked all last year, and i don't think enough has been done to make it stop sucking.I'm a Homer too, but JEEESSSH!I think both points are right. 1) Sam Adams is probably not enough to fix the line, but 2) Clemons? Good? This guy must not pay any attention. I think Jumpy is a bit better pas rusher than given credit for, and his issues against the run won't be a big deal because 1) he won't be out there on running downs, and 2) the DT experiment has come to a merciful conclusion. But there are real questions, like "How good is Robinson at end (or anywhere)?" and "Who's playing the other DT spot?" They may end up playing with 3 LB's + Pollack a lot simply because they don't have 4 good D-linemen.It just kind of sucks that there wasn't really anything on the D-line where the Bengals picked in the first. Oh well. Quote
ArmyBengal Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 I have been a HUGE critic of our d-line over the years and even I can see the light at the end of the tunnel !!! We can always hope can't we ??I'm not bashing the guy either, #30 is well deserved at this point !!!WHODEY !!! Quote
HoosierCat Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 I have been a HUGE critic of our d-line over the years and even I can see the light at the end of the tunnel !!!Run, it's an oncoming train. Seriously, tho, we know Robinson ain't the answer, and even if Sam plays well he isn't anything more than a stopgap. Our best DT is probably Thornton, but he is inconsistent and he isn't getting any younger, either. What we desperately need is for the Askew-Peko-Fanene-S. Smith collection to produce a couple difference-makers. Quote
bengal4life Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 S. Smith IMO will be the best tackle on our team by the end of the year. Quote

Stripes Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Our defensive line has been nothing short of pathetic for a long time. The guy did get Justin Smith backwards though. He might be one of the best run stopping DEs in the game, but struggles in the rush. Quote
HoosierCat Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Li'l tidbit from Ludwig for the "reading the tea leaves" file...Sam Adams' injury (leg and ankle) opens the door for third-year defensive tackle Matthias Askew to get more snaps."It's time for (Askew) to take that step," defensive line coach Jay Hayes said. "He's been here two years and getting better all the time. Part of the problem has been that he hasn't stayed healthy. Well, he's stayed healthy this year. He's a young guy and has growing to do. Hopefully, he'll be able to give it a run. He's got to. That's what it's come down to."That was published on July 30. Today on the site Hobson notes...No one will say why defensive tackle Matthias Askew isn’t practicingDon't sound good for Askew. Quote
ArmyBengal Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Might be the heart irregularities he now suffers as part of the tazing event. Well, that's what his attorney wants all to believe !!!WHODEY !!! Quote
Kirkendall Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 I look at it this way, it takes a taser to bring him down. That's got to go for something! Quote
