TippCityRick
Your candidates:JeantyJohnsonMillerNaviesPollackSimmonsThurman (4 game suspension?)WilkensNicholsonBrooksI go with Pollack, Thurman, & Johnson as the starters and four backups - Jeanty (pass rush), Wilkens (special teams), Nicholson (st and middle), & Brooks (both ends). I think the Brooks pick spells the end for Mr. Simmons and his lost step. Don't know how you cut two draft picks if your stated goal is to build through the draft. And I'm intrigued by Jeanty's speed of the edge. Of course there's Henderson to account for . . .

cincy90
Jeanty will make the team... and play. Marvin said he was one of the most impressive players in the offseason. While some people say that Simmons' time is up, I say Nicholson's time will never begin. They took a chance on him, and he screwed up before he even signed a contract. I bet they'll just chalk him up as a wated draft pick, and not sign him. DC_Bengals_Fan
I see Brooks as an end.If he eats like he did when he got kicked off he'll be an OT.Hrm, is this supposed to be the other 3-4 tweener we didn't get in the draft?
ArmyBengal
Yep, I saw the part of the article on Bengals.com where they were looking at him as a DE as well...WHODEY !!!
TippCityRick
Hrm, is this supposed to be the other 3-4 tweener we didn't get in the draft? That's why I threw it out there.I see Brooks as an end. He's down to 260 and played last year at 255. I just don't see it. Maybe on passing downs as a rush end but not in any regular rotation. Besides Henderson is a better fit a end.

I never understood that.Starters = Pollack, Thurman, SimmonsBack-ups = Johnson, Brooks (LB/DE), Jeanty (LB/DE)Still in the mix: Nicholson, WilkinsNeed to show big in camp = Miller, NaviesI see the LB corps molding into a group that can really rush the passer. AND pass rush from safety with Dexter and Madieu adds to the QB pressure. I think this is Marvin's mind set at safety and LB.

Maybe on passing downs as a rush end but not in any regular rotation. Agreed. I think the DE talk was started in reaction to his weight gain and fears that he'd outgrown the LB position. Clearly, if he's within 5 pounds of his fightin' weight that isn't true.

Wraith
I think the question is, what will be the LB corp next year.PollackJeantyThurmanNicholsonJohnsonBrooksThats the best young LB corp in the NFL (provided that we don't lose three to the Hamilton County Justice Center), sorry to see Simmons go but it will happen and Miller is a man without a position unless he learns to play safety quickly. HairOnFire
It's almost official. Pat Kirwan was on NFL Total Access, and he claimed that the last time he had spoken to Marvin it was made clear that Lewis was adamant about switching to a base 3-4 defense. Kirwan claimed they had spoken recently and then speculated that Brooks would man the SMLB position while Thurman would fill the WMLB spot. They will both be VERY special (assuming they stay out of trouble... and at this point I am excercising my faith that most people are more like me than Chris Henry). Spor_tees
Well I think you have Brooks on the Strong side OLB, Pollack on the Weakside OLB, then Simmons and Landon Johnson in the MLB positions, with Nicholson rotating in. Once Thurman returns, you move Simmons to Weakside OLB and rotate Brooks in. On running downs you might also see Henderson play some OLB. Caleb Miller might as well go ahead and buy his train ticket out of town, Miller along with Navies are all but goners. Jeanty has the speed to be a ST deamon along with Wilkins. This might even be the last camp for Wilkins if some of the rookies like Kilmer and Busing show they can be large contributors.Any way you look at this roster, someone good is going to get cut. We're not going to be a 3-4 to start the season... and we probably won't use it at all until Thurman gets back. What this really does is set it up for next year. Marvin better be on the lookout for a true NT, because we still don't have one.Anyway... Pollack will not play WSLB. He's a SSLB through and through. Landon and Simmons are WSLBs, and Thurman, Brooks, Landon and Simmons can all play inside. Pollack is the least versatile when it comes to the LB position... but he plays some DE too, so he's still a versatile all around football player. Just don't expect hiom to be able to play WS. His specialty is rushing the QB from the SS.

ChadJohnson-85
It would be nice to see the Bengals in a 3-4 but didnt Justin Smith say that he wont stay around next year if we go to a 3-4???
NJ29
It would be nice to see the Bengals in a 3-4 but didnt Justin Smith say that he wont stay around next year if we go to a 3-4???In all honesty, I don't really think that it's necessary to keep him if we switch to the 3 - 4. I'm hoping that Odell and Brooks can stay out of trouble and man the two middle spots, and Pollack would fit perfectly as a defensive end in the 3 -4, but who fills the last spot? Landon? I don't know who you throw in there. Here are my guesses on who could start if we go 34.DE - John Thornton | Matthias Askew NT - Sam Adams | Shuan Smith DE - Brian Robinson | Domata PekoWOLB - Geathers? SOLB - David PollackWILB - Odell ThurmanSILB - Ahamd Brooks(If he pans out) or Landon JohnsonI don't know where Simmons fit sin the 3 - 4, if he does. I'm all for keeping him, and I like the guy, but I don't where he fits in the 34.
