Round 4: DT Domata Peko

They addressed a position of need so that alone pleases me...didn't they draft SSmith from S. Carolina and cut the player he played with the year before...maybe MAskew is getting the axe this year...

Watched him alot great pick!

A lot of teams are passing on harris because he's a tweener at DT!

Kelley Washington is on the trade block!

Go bengals

At this point we had better get more than just 1 pick for Washington. He may only be a #4, but he's more valuable than a 5th round pick.

TJJackson is the most negative person i have ever seen. Can we save all of his posts so he can feel like an idiot next year?
I made the mistake of trying to reason with him for far too long... but recently found out that you should never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level, and then beat you with experience.

I'm ignoring him from now on while I attempt to actually enjoy being a Bengals fan. The rest of us could be having a really fun time if we weren't so busy trying to convince that ingrate to join us. If he doesn't want to enjoy Peko's hair, let him sulk.

Solid 4th round pick - Peko is hilarious looking and will be fun to watch.

Huge lower body, big bushy hairdo out of his helmet and is as athletic and quick for a 320 pd guy as I've ever seen.

If he can improve his strength with some NFL training, he could be a steal.

Look forward to watching him in preseason, interesting pick.

If nothing else, we have a guy to compete with Polamalu's hair twice a year.

Cut it out, folks. TJJ included. Use this thread to discuss the pick, and leave the bickering to the PMs.

That gives him all the traits Marvin loves in a D-lineman, but we've gotten used to those guys being tweeners... This guy has size to boot! For the 4th time, I love this pick. B)

My Michigan State Homegirl wifey loves the Hurley Peko pick, which pretty much means I do. I think its a good pick, qualified by whether he actually works hard. I've heard the 100% effort comment, but also read that he's inconsistent to the point of having zero impact. I'm inclined to believe the former rather than the latter. Why would marvin pick an Askew clone?

But I'm not particularly thrilled with this years draft either. I think Marvin may have been blindsided by the higher-than-expected interest in DBs and TEs. But having said that, how many draft busts based on talent and heart has Marvin had since he's been here? Askew, maybe Washington, and...? I will not become disheartened until we miss the playoffs. WHO DEY!

I watched Peko a decent bit last year and he was definately an athletic, all-over-the field kind of guy. The one thing that nobody is looking at with him is his weight distribution. I actually think he plays quite low (contrary to some suggestions), but his power all comes from his legs, which are tree trunk huge. His uppy body looks puny in comparison. When I see a powerful DT with a puny upper body, that P word, potential comes up again. This guy could easily put on 20-30 lbs more and then youve got an animal inside.

Good pick.

I don't know, 53 tackles and 3 sacks for a DT on a Big Ten team seems like good effort to me.

It'll be interesting to see how much PT he earns, potentially better than Smith or Askew right off the bat.

Well, at least one of Smith and Askew will be cut. Id expect 2 DT cuts, one being Thornton/Robinson, the other being Smith/Askew. Peko and Adams both will make the team, which leaves 2 open spots at DT.

Him and Fanene are gonna look awesome next to each other with their helmats off

Lovely, lovely.

We pass again on a number of other better players so we can have yet another underwhelming DT from Michigan State

I think I had the draft rated an F+ prior to this. Solid F now.

Just horrendous.

Are we suppossed draft reggie myles picks 1-7 would that make your ass happy?

4 star player as a post-HS recruit, only played one year of football in HS.

Sounds like the anti-Askew:

“I’m intense, ready to play, ready to take people’s heads off. I get that from my Samoan culture, in our tradition we’re known as being warriors."

"Whatever team drafts me I want to go to mini-camp and start balling right away and get into that starting position because I don’t want to sit around,” Peko said.

Peko currently lives in Indiana with his brother Tupe. He was recently engaged and has a one-year-old son named Domata Jr. “That really helped me set my priorities straight and focus, just to ball out every game because I know I have a family to feed. I have a lot of responsibilities,” he said

"When we had our team autograph day, I had people telling me how much they enjoyed themselves when they were in Samoa," commented Peko. "It's nice to hear that. What the Americans should know about the Samoan culture is that we are very respectful people, especially to our elders."

"My favorite Samoan phrase is Mua Mua Leatua," said Peko. "It means to put God first."

(so he puts God first but wants to take people's heads off - whatever - just seems like a good character guy to boot)

Sounds like Palamalu. Character may be a bigger issue for Marvin than before. The Frostee interview mirrors that.

We're getting good depth, guys. I don't expect Thornton or Robinson to get cut just yet, but at least we'll have some good training camp competition.

Bengals smash back

By GEOFF HOBSON

April 30, 2006

1:40 p.m.

The Bengals didn’t get huge Haloti Ngata this weekend. But maybe they got the next best thing in the fourth round Sunday when they selected Michigan State defensive tackle Domata Peko.

Don’t call him a poor man’s Ngata because the 6-2, 315-pounder is a fine player in his own right with an outstanding senior season in which he had 53 tackles, two fumble recoveries, and one of the most famous touchdown runs in college history.

Peko, a lifelong friend of fellow Bengals defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene from American Samoa, fits the mold of run stuffer and puts heat on another Michigan State tackle, Matthias Askew, as well as Shaun Smith, to make the Cincinnati roster.

Peko also knows Ngata, the 6-4, 340-pound block of granite from Oregon that went to Baltimore with the 12th pick in the draft on Saturday.

“Ngata’s a great player,” said defensive line coach Jay Hayes. “(Peko) is a little smaller, a little lighter, but I think a little quicker. It’s up for debate (that Peko has a better motor) if you’re a Ngata fan.

“One thing you do see is when you see the kid intercept the football against Michigan and run (74 yards) and no one catches him,” Hayes said. “That’s hard to do. Supposedly all the great athletes in the funny helmets chasing him, and he weaved through there.”

Peko’s size and flowing mane out of his helmet made the film clip so memorable. Athletic? Especially when he leaped over the diving Michigan running back at the end of the run.

“That was the first game my Mom and Dad came to see me play,” Peko said. “When we played Ohio State the week after, everybody at Ohio State was congratulating me.”

Now already an Ohio legend, Peko is a nice fit in Cincinnati on a team looking for a big, young stuffer learning from John Thornton, Bryan Robinson, and Sam Adams in the middle. With Ngata going to Baltimore and Ted Washington to Cleveland, the Bengals are fighting the smash mouth of the AFC North with more smash mouth by adding Adams and Peko.

“We’re the same kind player. The same body shape. We’re both Polynesian,” Peko said of Ngata. “A run stopper. Clog up the holes so the linebackers can be free. Take up two men.”

He’s also a nice fit because even though he played in a 4-3 at Michigan State, he’s got the style and dimensions to be a nose in 3-4 whenever the Bengals want to go multiple.

“I like to play between 315 and 320,” Peko said.

“I’m heavy enough not to get pushed back and quick enough to move around and make plays.”

Like second-rounder Andrew Whitworth, Peko had one of the more delightful interviews at the scouting combine in February. His father is a pastor and he plays the guitar in a church band.

“I’m so excited. I just thank God for getting picked up,” he said, “and happy to go to Cincinnati and I’m right there from Michigan State and I’m glad to go back to the Midwest and play football.”

:sure:
