Get used to the fact that most seasons the Bengals will now be selecting players to fill backup roles for thier first season with the club, the days of starting 2 or 3 rookies the first game of the season aare over thank god for that.

finally! someone who gets it! i was begining to think everyone was retarded. the bengals don't suck anymore. so rookies are not an upgrade at every postition. thank goodness for that!

we won't really know anything about these guys until they get on the field in may. the first day certainly looks solid, but we shall see. in marvin we trust. stop wavering bengaldom. he's got us this far.

Wow,it's amazing how many ppl on here don't see the big picture,it's all about instant gratification.Tory James isn't getting any younger, don't you think it is wise to get a replacement for him now?I like the first rd pick.As for the 2nd round pick, why would we want to make sure we protect the most important player on the field.rolleyes.gif I remember when Levi was drafted Mel"helmet hair"Kiper called it a terrible pick,if Kiper doesn't like it,it usually is a good pick.Frostee is a weird pick, but hey lets see what happens.

I posted this in another thread, but thought it more appropriate here.

i have slept on it and still think we could have done a lot better . if any of these guys become probowlers or even better than average starters then i will eat some crow . but i don't think any of them will be better than the guys they are suppose to replace .( willie tory & justin ) all i can see is marginal at best . joseph might be a good one but only time will tell . i mean don't get me wrong i hope they all become top tier players but i don't see it . but no matter they are now bengals and i will support them and i hope for the best from all of them . GO BENGALS

Of course it is. But there was no need to do it in the first round. Looking at the DB talent before the draft, I thought it very likely that a solid corner prospect would be there in the second (indeed, among others, Youboty was still on the board).

Here is my Day 1 grade:

4.25 + 3 + 1.75 = 9.0 / 3 = 3 SOLID B grade for first day.

I'll agree with this, except maybe call it a B- because IMO Rucker was picked at least 2 rounds too early.

But Joseph and Whitworth are right on even though I'd have rather not seen O-Line creep into the draft fold at all.

I'm not surprised that neither TE, S, or DT was taken in Day 1 but am still aggravated that Frostee Rucker was picked ahead of safeties and DTs who were available in the 3rd round.

The positions drafted were pretty predictable, and as a result made for a rather boring day one.

Joseph only has one full year of Div IA experience - and I'm sorry but for a first round pick, THAT concerns me.

Whitworth is a big measurables guy that I'm sure Paul Alexander fell in love with at some point and convinced Marvin and Co. to reach for him.

All 3 picks were reaches in my opinion, which is never good.

But there were no high risk, high reward players, although Joseph kind of falls into that category.

Frostee is just another Geathers without the upside - the Bengals still lack an impact player upfront on defense and are stacking their team with a lot of "capable" guys, but no one who is dominant or of a pro bowl caliber outside of Odell and Madeiu and Deltha.

Rucker's just a guy who can play right away on situational downs and give Geathers and/or Justin a breather - and cause some havoc in the backfield from time to time. Guess we'll have to see with him.

I like Whitworth well enough, but just can't see him being a plowhorse run blocker, which is bad for a guy with his size. But Tackle depth is important at this point, and you're not going to get a starting caliber OT after day one.

Andrews and Whitworth make for an interesting duo, both are huge and athletic with good upside.

This draft was about adding more quality depth - and quality depth is what separates the contendors from the pretenders i guess.

We'll just have to endure. The roster here is pretty much set - I still highly approve of Marvin's ability to manage a roster - key to being successful.

I slept on it as well and am a little better. Regardless of "Do we need a rookie to start", there were other players that "appeared" to be the better pick. I trust in Marvin and the scouting team, but like most, were hoping for names I recognized... I really need to stop doing that crap when I know Marvin is the coach !!!

WHODEY !!!

All 3 picks were reaches in my opinion, which is never good.

Day 1 this year struck me as very need-driven. Not that I think Joseph (JJ2?) was a bad pick, but I have a hard time believing that they thought the 4th CB to come off the board (and the 6th DB overall) was BPA versus a Marcedes Lewis or Winston Justice, who would have been the No. 2's at their position to be called (or any wideout, who would have been No. 1).

I think they got a little panicky in the first. They clearly wanted a solid DB early, but de3fensive players were coming off the board at an alarming rate. Only 8 of the first 23 picks were on offense. DBs were falling like flies, and so were all the LBVs they coveted, like Lawson and Wimbley; Whitner, Sims, Carpenter, Greenway, all thought as possible picks and all gone.

So they decided not to risk a continued run at DB that took everyone good off the board, and picked Joseph.

Whitworth in the second was a clear need pick, in some ways similar to the selection of Rudi Johnson. Back then, remember, the Bengals were at odds with Dillon (as usual) and there were threats of a holdout, yada, yada, yada. So they were forced to grab a running back. Now they are facing big losses (or big contracts) on the o-line, and with Willie stiffing them, they were forced to move on the tackle position.

Rucker is just a goofy pick. Very hard to buy the notion that he was BPA at that point. But viewed from their need for a better pass rush, it makes perfect sense -- at least with regards to the position, if not the player.
