derekshank
Assuming we don't get with Kiwi or Hali or Lawson (or the like) we are going to be really light at DE this year. You can argue that DE is where we have the most need. We only have 3 true DE's and one of the is Fanene! Brady Smith from the Falcons is still out there. He had neck surgery last year, and missed the first half of the season... but was pretty productive in the second half. Maybe because of his surgery he's considered and injury risk... but that probably just means we could get him fairly cheap. He would be a significant upgrade from the backup DE's we had last year. Does anyone know anything I don't that would cause us to want to stay away?
Stripes
I thought someone signed him up. If not, I agree that he could be a good pickup. I think we're done with the free agents though. Let's get Steinbach signed and look to the draft.

I think we are done in FA... and I think it has been the best offseason the Bengals have had in my memory. However, we do need to fill that DE hole. I assume it will be a priority in the draft... but you go based on what is available, and not need, so it is possible we miss out on a DE. If that happens, we'll be forced to use Thornton and B Robinson as DE's at times... and I just don't like that for a pass rush.I don't think he has signed with anyone yet. (at least he's not listed with a team on NFL.com). I very much doubt we'll pick him up... but he is someone that caught my eye when I was browsing an NFL related site today. Stripes
If for whatever reason things don't fall our way during the draft as far as DEs go, then I'd assume we'd start getting into the mix with Brady Smith. You're right, there is a definite need at the position, and someone needs to fill the hole... Still the coaches seem eerily confident in Geathers, and I am a Justin Smith fan, so they may be looking for another smaller role player. Mckracken
I'm not sure of the compensation needed but Robert Mathis is a restricted free agent. Depending on the pick he was great in Indy last year. I know a lot of it had to do with playing with freeney but it would be worth a shot if it was cheap enough! GO BENGALS!!! HoosierCat
I mentioned Brady Smith as a possibility back when he was first let go. IIRC there was some talk that the Falcons wanted to resign him...
turningpoint
well smith IMO is an everydown player. geathers plays the 1st 2 downs and then pollack plays his spot on 3rd down.IMo were set there unless we have an injury. I also see a lot of upside in fanene
WretchedOne
We are definately VERY thin at DE, and I really expect us to be addressing this need in the draft. I would be expecting at least 2 DEs in the draft. In the 1st roud, I'm pretty much expecting them to be choosing between a DE or a CB and it all depends on who's on the board and who the Bengals have ranked higher. If Tamb Hali is still on the board, I think it would be really hard for Marvin to pass him up. The whole situation surrounding Tamba just smells like he'll end up here. He's a guy who's getting knocked and bumped out of the 1st round, much like David Pollack last year. Tamba and David have basically the same kind of great character, intensity, energy, football "fire" and desire to just play. There are still other players later in the draft that I think would be an upgrade at RDE over Robert. Players like Mark Anderson, Jason Hatcher, Chris Gocong, Eric Henderson, Stanley McGlover, Frostee Rucker (if he can be motivated). But who knows, Robert has lost 20 pounds, so he's definately got some speed back and he knows what it's like to go a full 16 games as a starter, so...I think a TC battle between Tamba and Robert would be a great thing to watch.... ArmyBengal
DE is a position that could be addressed more ethan once this draft due to the lack of depth. I don't see FA as a way Marvin would address this need, but we will all see in a couple more days !!!WHODEY !!!
