per florio over at pft the deal makes him the league's highest paid FB

JOHNSON CASHES IN

Fullback Jeremi Johnson, a guy of whom we admittedly hadn't heard before this week, has suddently gone from no-name to highest-paid at his position.

After signing his restricted free agent tender on Thursday, we've learned that Johnson has now agreed to terms on a deal that averages more than $1.5 million annually over five years.

Per a league source, the deal also includes first-year compensation of $2.4 million, in the form of a $1.5 million signing bonus and a $900,000 base salary. Johnson would have received $712,000 in 2006 under the one-year restricted free agent tender.

The move also gives the Bengals what likely is a first in NFL history -- a starting tailback and fullback with the last name of "Johnson," and a first name than ends in "i."

Jeremi is a decent player....BUT WTF is the big bucks getting handed over for him????????????????????????

Don't get me wrong, but this cash could have gone into Eric's and Levi's plan, maybe this cash could have gone to another defensive player who could have helped (LaVarr)....maybe I'm overreacting but this is an innane move by the financial wizards down at the stadium....

Wouldn't it be the Bengals who set the new high mark for paying a player who's committment and professionalism have been questioned, playing a position that is easy-to-moderate to replace>>>?????

I had similar thoughts myself. I wouldn't tag it a questionable move, but it is eyebrow-raising. Still, I think that JJ has potential he hasn't even begun to tap, and not just as a blocker but as a playmaker in his own right. And while it's big bucks for a fullback, it's pocket change in NFL terms. So I think it's a good move.

Terms of the deal weren't too clear, but I'm betting this contains some non-guaranteed money or something. I can't imagine they gave a FB a contract where he can reasonably expect to get $1.5/yr. I mean, I think JJ is great, but still.

I *definitely* didn't want to lose him, but did they really need to give him that much to keep him?

The deal averages $1.5 million a year; JJ will get more early and less later.

In total, it's worth a bit more than $7.5 million over 5 years, per the reports. $2.4 million of that comes in year one in bonus and salary combined ($1.5 million SB, $900k salary). The remaining amount averages about $1.3 million over the final four years. Given that his year 1 salary is $900k, year 2-5 salaries are probably something like $1.0, $1.1, $1.2, and $1.3 million, respectively. There's probably $400-500k of incentive money, but JJ ought to see virtually all his coin as long as he stays with the team.

Putting on your capologist cap, what is the impact this year versus the tender JJ already signed and how much cap room do we have remaining in 2006 to mess around with? Anything left for the o-line?

Jeremi is already the best run-blocking fullback in the NFL, and he's got room to improve and mature overall. I would not say he is the best all-around fullback, but he is probably worth the money. There is no surplus of quality fullbacks in the league. With some pro teams relying on the fullback less and less, fewer quality fullbacks are being developed. Overall I am pretty pleased with the signing.

Oh, yeah. The 1-year tender would have been $721,000 vs. the cap; under the new deal JJ's cap number is about $1.38 million. So the net cap hit is about $659,000. Peanuts, in NFL terms.

I like it. I think he's one of the best fullback's in the league and definitely the most athletic(i call him twinkle toes myself)

Once again proves Mikey isn't "cheap" on players. Bottom line, you perform in Cincy, do what you're asked of, and "Do YOUR JOB" and you'll be rewarded.

I think in these next few years he'll prove he belongs in the Pro Bowl, not once, but consistently every year.

I think this is a good move. JJ has helped Rudi rush for more yards than Dillion as a Bengal........twice.

He is a good blocker, he can run the rock, he can catch out of the back field and he and RJ have good chemistry.

Personally, I think he's done a better job hear than Lorenzo Neal. And Lorenzo Neal is regarded as the best FB in the league. Once again, Marvin and company are rewarding players for their play.

We have a good fullback so why not lock him up for five years? By year 4, this salary might be average for fullbacks......who knows.

I'd rather sign him for 5 at 1.5, then keep signing one year contracts and risk loosing him.

I love to see players that are drafted by the Bengals, play good, and get rewarded for the long run.

Jeremi Johnson represents the home grown players I'm talking about.

I really have very little issue with this move at all. Can it be easily replaced ?? Yes, but now we won't have to for the next 5 years and come this time next year, no one will even remember this conversation, but JJ will be a stud continuing his blocking and catching abilities out of the backfield...

If they spent this on JJ, they must obviously have a plan for the o-line that we just aren't privy to. Stay tuned kids !!!

WHODEY !!!

In case you were wondering just how big of an idiot Florio is.

I like this deal a lot. I think that JJ is a very consistent blocker, that he's learned from his "bad year" and will only become more valuable with time. And name for me another blocking back that can catch passes as well as he can.

From .com:

That's the big thing about this deal. Rudi turns 27 Oct. 1 and has four years left. Jeremi turns 26 a week before the opener and can turn 31 here. Throw in the 24-year-old Perry and the backfield is awash in youth.

How key is this going into the season as defending division champs but with a questionable QB situation. I think our RB situation over the next few years is going to be so consistent it will be boring. In a good way.

Speaking of idiopts, Warren Sapp was a quest analyist on NFL Total Access and when the news that JJ was now the highest paid FB in the NFL his eyes got as big as pie plates as he sarcastically whined..."Well, look at the Bengals. I guess things have changed." He then steered the conversation towards how most NFL teams have dropped the FB position altogether.

No doubt about it, Warren still has issues with the Bengals.
