wdj108
First off I am a Steelers fan, bare with me though. Listen to my points and take them as you will, if you chose to blow them off due to the fact you think I'm bias, that’s fine.I found this site and article (April 12th: “Don’t Pity the Steelers for Asterisk”) by ‘googling’ news for the steelers. I was in desperate need of some good off-season info. Plus I would love to have some good off season banter about the NFL, particularly Steelers vs Bengals. The points in your article I'll touch on . . . asterisk on the steelers SB, the cowher we day chant, steelers end is near/hope they can keep up, and how many super bowls will lewis have in the next ten years?ASTERISK: "Asterisks" only exist for about a month or two. After that they fade away and people realize that breaks, questionable calls, bad/lucky bounces, injuries etc happen in every single game. They are just magnified in the larger games. Do people put an asterisk next to the Patriots first SB? When they had the tuck rule against Oakland, 14 points off of special teams against the steelers, and a last second FG against the rams. No. They beat the three best teams in the league that year in the playoffs and deserve the trophy. Examples like this can be found in every sport every year. "Asterisks" don't exist unless there is a shortened season or a strike and scabs play.WE DAY CHANT: This was a mistake by cowher. He admits it. He'll pay for it this year too when the media replays it all week before each of the steelers/bengal games. It will be bulletin board material for cincy, not that they need to be more pumped for these games. That is the first time that I can remember that cowher did not win with class after a big game victory or loss. He should have acted like he's been there before.END IS NEAR/CAN STEELERS KEEP UP?: The end is not near for the steelers. They have proven for the better part of the last four decades that they continue to be a playoff contender each year. The years they are not in the top of the league they are still competitive. The steelers will be just fine. They have proven under cowher that they remain a playoff force under lack luster QB's and getting raided by free agency. There is no reason that with a great young (healthy) QB, a surprise young talented RB, 10 picks in this years draft and every starter with the exception of three signed through 2007 that they will be fading any time soon. Yes, they Bengals are the new kid on the block. They had an amazing 2005 and won the division and possibly could have gone farther without the huge injury. But it was just one year. The bengals are just the new rival. Since cowher has been coach the steelers have had just as intense, if not more intense, rivalries with Houston (Oilers), Clev (Pre Move), Jax, Tenn, Balt, and NE. The steelers came out on top of most of these rivalries (def not NE) and hopefully the same will be true with the new bengal rivalry. The two teams are both very good, relatively young, and have carbon copy coaches. If anything the question marks are for the bengals, with their franchise QB recovering from what doctors initially described as a potentially career ending injury.HOW MANY SB WILL LEWIS HAVE AFTER 14 YEARS: This is what gets under my skin about the bengal fans. They just had their first winning season and first division title in about 20 years and they start thinking how many super bowls they are going to win over the next ten seasons. Odds are . . .not many. The most SB won in ten years was four by the 49'ers and Steelers. In fact, I think only three other teams have three SB’s in that span, Wash, Dallas, and NE. So do you really think the bengals after one good season are going to be ranked with some of the greatest teams to play the game? Chances are they will not. So take winning in stride and act like you've been there before. Don't think that the bengals will just be raking in championships because they have a good coach and QB and are coming off a solid season. Look at Philly and Indy, two of the best teams year in and year out for the last half decade. They have 1 SB appearance and 0 victories. Winning is not easy and projecting a slew of championships in the next ten years is just ignorant and wishful thinking. So what is all this blabber from a steelers fan worth to a bengals fan/site. Not much I know. The steelers will take the bengals very serious because they know they are a great team with a solid coach. I hope the bengals keep up the quality because I love the new rivalry the proximity of the cities makes it that much greater. However steeler fans will not take the bengals fans serious until they start selling out their stadium and continue to support their team throughout the years, win or lose. Until then I thank you for making it easy for me to get tickets in your stadium so I can catch one more or my team’s games.
Stripes
I won't touch on the topics you brought up related to the Superbowl or the We Dey chant, because I think those have been beaten into the ground.Yes, I think the Steelers will still be very much in the thick of the playoff race this year. They've lost a lot this offseason, but still have the core players in place to succeed. I'll be the first to admit that I do consider Roethlisberger one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL, and when you stick him with that offensive line, Hines Ward, and a defense that never seems to underperform... Then you will have a perennial playoff contender.Still, considering how the Bengals have been developing the last few years under Marvin, one could infer that they are headed towards their own era of success. We have a franchise quarterback, a franchise running back, two or three franchise caliber receivers, and an elite offensive line. Yeah, the defense has struggled the past few seasons, but it is getting better and the final pieces to Marvin's plan are finally being put into place this offseason. How many Superbowls will he win in the next 14 years? You're right, there's no way to tell. With the team he has assembled right now, I think he's more than capable of getting at least one, and maybe even more. These two teams forged a fierce rivalry last season, and I would certainly hope that the players and fans of BOTH teams would be willing to take each other seriously. Also, the poster here who wrote that article is "walzav29." You could contact him through the personal message system if you like.
bengalindian
I'm glad Cowher knows he screwed up, because he's just about as classy as my friends who are Steelers fans. They've been saying "We Dey" to me since the Super Bowl, and frankly, that's pathetic.Second, I don't think any Bengals fan on this site would realistically expect the Bengals to win 3 or 4 Super Bowls in the next ten years, or simply to expect the Bengals to "rake in championships." (Well, besides Spain of course). That's absurd...we all know how difficult it is to be consistent in the NFL, WE'RE BENGALS FANS!!Third, I'm not sure I understand this whole, "We won't take you guys seriously until they start selling out their stadium and continue to support the team throughout the years" thing. Umm, hello? Bengals fans have sold out every game the last two years (I'm pretty sure) and averaged more than several other teams as far as attendance goes over the 15 years of hell. So don't talk to us about attendance, because Bengals fans have stayed strong throughout our years of misery. Anyone can see that.Lastly, it's no longer easy for you to get a ticket for Steelers games because they come in a package, and unless you're close and want to see another game, too bad for you. redsbengalsbucks
Even in the dark days of the late 90's the Bengals fans showed solid support for the team.Average attendance was around 50,000 for the most part and the Bengals have sold out every home game for three straight seasons, get with it and quit living in the distant past. BengalByTheBay
Steeler Fan -- pretty good points overall. I would be happy starting with 1 SuperBowl victory, but you can't really blame fans for being excited. I doubt there's much different sentiment over at the Bronco's, Colt's, Patriot's ....... well, you get the idea. Yeah, we generally hate Steeler fans, but you've currently got the only thing that makes any difference -- scoreboard. I do think that there are plenty of fans who plant an asterisk on the first Pat's SB based on the Oakland game BTW. Bottom line is, you're not gonna change the outlook of those who think your team got the red carpet to the championship, so get used to it. Otherwise, as long as you realize that Cowher screwed up in the lockerroom chant, I pretty much agree with everything you've said. Unlike many of your counterparts, you didn't go to the "TJ soiled the towel" argument. I respect you for that. In case it needs to be said, there's a huge difference between how a head coach is supposed to act and how a player is supposed to act. I don't think the Steelers are going to crumble next season because, as you note, they've proven adept at filling FA defection spots. As far as that goes -- Bettis was becoming fairly situational, Randle El shouldn't have been kept based on the ridiculous market set by the skins, and your defense appears to me to be back relatively complete. Miller helps you tremendously and, if anything, your needs look about the same this year as they did after last season. You probably need another couple of WR's to start with. Anyway, thanks for the balanced statements -- hang around and let's pick apart each other's drafts in a few weeks.

lando griffin
Pretty good post besides the rip on the fans. I hate when people say "well, you didn't sell out when you were losing, so you must be fairweather fans. We support our team win or lose." Oh really Steelers fans, I forgot about all those miserable seasons you had in the 90s and how you kept supporting them no matter what. Oh yea, us and the Cardinals are like the only teams in history to experience such abysmal losing over a decade, and we still put up a pretty good showing of fan support. So before you act all high and mighty realize that you haven't had to put up with anything worse than a mediocre season.

We have had soooooooooooo many years of losing that it is really exciting to us when we are actually respectable again. Nobody but us and the Cardinals know what it is like. BTW even the Cardinals went to the playoffs in 1998 so it really hasn't been that long for them. So dont act like s**tsburgh has been horrible for 15 years. ArmyBengal
"NEW" rivalry ?? NEW ?? You must be one of the Steelers fans I always talk about on here when the likes of you come around... Your team wins, and you are a fan, the team loses, and you don't give a sh*t. This has been a rivalry FOREVER !!! The Steeler fans have been coming to Cincinnati for years and Bengals fans have done the same. I myself made the trip there for the better portion of the late 70's and 80's. This is not a "new" thing and to make the comment about selling out your stadium is just ignorant on your part. Some of your other comments are decent... Cowher's "we dey" was stupid on his part and will definitely give the opposition (namely us) some motivation. The question you posed:"So what is all this blabber from a steelers fan worth to a bengals fan/site?"Then you answered:"Not much"You are incorrect in your response... The proper answer to the question is:NOT A F*CKING THING !!! WHODEY !!!
bengalindian
I guess I should have clarified. I just meant to say that cincy9275 shouldn't be talking about the Steelers intentionally hurting Carson, because I don't believe a word of that. However, I am 100% pissed about the mocking and extreme low class of the Steeler organization and fans about the injury. When Doug Johnson or Craig Krenzel beats the Steelers the first time out (hopefully Carson is back), then we will all laugh and mock at the Steelers and then infiltrate their fan sites and boards with all our smack.WHO DEY!!! Dan2330
I really can't see many Steeler fans standing in Heinz Field on Sunday's while they wave their pathetic towels saying... "Gee, you know what I would respect the Bengals more if their fans showed up for the games." Most of them are probably peeved now because it just became a lot harder for them to 'travel well' into Cincy. Guess you ass monkeys will just have to find a soft stadium like Indianapolis to travel too- their fans are pathetic.

cincy9275
everyone does have there own opinions . i understand people want to think that players are above this and they are suppose to be but there not . i mean look around the league at guys like henrey , ray and jamal lewis the list goes on and on. what happen to Carson is a retaliation to what they claim odell did. and that is how i see it and i won't change my mind . and most steelers fan are like this guy trying to push us around tell how we should act and think try to belittle and insult us and we should sit here and take . no i don't think so . and the main reason i post here is because the freedom i have to say what ever i want . if i offended any Bengals fans that was not my intentions but i will not apologize for saying what i feel. and thanks to all who backed me on my right to say what i think even if some don't agree with me . You big bad Squealer fans cant tell us how to think and feel and we cant tell you how to act either, we can make comments on each other and we can argue with each other but that's about it. MacD BengalFan
HOW MANY SB WILL LEWIS HAVE AFTER 14 YEARS: This is what gets under my skin about the bengal fans. This is the only issue I have with your post. Us true, loyal football fans of what was considered at one time the "worst franchise in sports" have every right to predict how many championships we will win under Marvin the Marvelous. You gave examples of teams that have gotten 3 or more championships in ten years, so why not the Bengals? Is it because "it is the Bengals?" Or is it because you don't want the Bengals to enjoy that kind of success? Yes, it is difficult to do, we all know that. But after waiting 14 years just to have winning season, we have every right to say what we say and do what we do because winning have been difficult. We will not take winning in stride because it has been fleeting for the past 14 years. Put yourself in our shoes, would you not start boasting as well if your Steelers suffered as much as our Bengals?
