AGrizzlyBaer
Chick Ludwig, Dayton Daily NewsThe longer the Bengals go without adding a veteran free-agent quarterback, the greater the chances are that the club will draft a QB or sign a college free agent. The logical choice, of course, is veteran Jamie Martin, who has proven talent. He did a solid job in St. Louis' vertical offense. The rookie draft picks to keep an eye on in the mid-to-late rounds are Clemson's Charlie Whitehurst, UCLA's Drew Olson and Oregon's Kellen Clemens. All three have the ability to throw deep downfield and put pressure on a defense, which is exactly what the Bengals want.My pick for a college free agent, should he go undrafted, is Miami of Ohio's Josh Betts. His big arm will serve him well in an NFL training camp this summer. He could easily wind up being the Bengals' No. 4 man behind Carson Palmer, Craig Krenzel and Doug Johnson. schweinhart
Kellen Clemens is the one I like that Chick's got. He did well to get back in time to perform for scouts off his broken ankle. The thing that separates Clemens from the others for me is how well he can time out on the routes of an undefendable-type receiver like Demetrius Williams....It's like Chad, if you get him the ball of his break, no DB is going to be quicker off their reaction to jump it. Clemens can make those throws and the Bengals need that timing with Chad as much as they need a big armed QB.I'd be all for Clemens in the 5th round but he's been getting his share of workouts IIRC so it may take a Day 1 pick to get him. skyline
I just love the fact that we can talk about drafting something like QB, and not have to worry because some other glaring team need is going unaddressed.
ArmyBengal
I'm not sure how I feel about when we would look at a QB, but there are enough out there that would be a better backup option than old Doug Johnson !!!WHODEY !!!
TJJackson
I'm a fan of Betts as a strong-armed developmental QB, and have him in my mock draft at pick 7a
Stripes
Betts keeps getting more and more attention. I could also see us going with one of the mobile guys like McNeal or Robinson in the mid to late rounds. They could offer a versatile backup option as well as a Randle El-like weapon elsewhere. Seriously, Marvin has done a GOOD job with the free agents and taking away "must draft" position needs.
