lando griffin
I hate front loaded contracts. for the reason of asking for more money just because he went over a quota. I like back loaded so we could cut our losses if he ends up being a bust. I dont get excited over a speech. He maybe be able to talk the talk but my three year old sister can do that. I want him to walk the walk.Alex, honestly, I had to read this thread because i was thinking the exact OPPOSITE of the topic on this. This is a cheap deal no question about it, I'm not even going to argue about it. Ok, if we want to be the redskins who back load their s**t and then cut their players before they pay them that's fine, but I think this way is better. Sam wants to be here, will probably be his best for us this year, and should get paid 3-4 mill this year. He's solid, and God forbid he does reach that 4 mill mark, it means he's helping us a ton. Let's get him enough money now to spread some goodwill and "not make him look like an idiot". Rather have happy players that know what their getting into with our organization than players who think theyre getting f**ked. I wish I was the first to reply to this post instead of repeating what everyone else already said, but I had to express my disapproval. Bobcat Bengal
LOLYou get fans clamoring for "Big Name Free Agents" in the off-season.We get one (our biggest name anyway) and now we overpaid him?Let's re-negotiate his contract to pay him a sixpence and schilling.ALWAYS something..........geez
HairOnFire
LOLYou get fans clamoring for "Big Name Free Agents" in the off-season.We get one (our biggest name anyway) and now we overpaid him? Speaking only for myself, I was one of those who constantly mocked the clamoring for a "Big Name Free Agent", and never once was in favor of signing Fat Sam. I also mocked at every turn the idea that Sam Adams was worth major coin. So please don't paint me with your broad brush because I've been totally consistent in my ranting and raving. In fact, I'm the guy who argued long and hard that Bengal fans had drastically overreacted to the ground pounding they witnessed against the Steelers, and pointed to defenses fatal flaw being exposed during the final 9 weeks of the season. Specifically, no pass rush and soft zone coverages...things Sam Adams won't help changing. Ehhh?
turningpoint
this deal is no where near too much money, Odell will be 2x the LB he is being able to fly sideline to sideline without having ot shed gaurds and centers.
kingwilly
I'd have to disagree, at least in part. With Fat Sammy, we should expect SOME increase in overall effectiveness in the run D. If that proves to be the case, teams will be facing more 2nd/3rd and longs. With more distance needed on these downs, our pass rush gets an extra second or two and our soft zone has proven effective with our ball-hawking skills...........thus Sam Adams helps our pass D. HoosierCat
Specifically, no pass rush and soft zone coverages...things Sam Adams won't help changing. Ehhh?Actually, if Sam has anything left (and that remains a sizeable "if" IMHO), he ought to provide a boost to the pass rush. Despite his size, Sam has always been known more for his ability to penetrate, collapse the pocket, and get to the QB. As I've said repeatedly, he's been at his most effective when he's been teamed with a big run-stuffer (Siragusa, Williams), which is why I think the most effective move, given our current crop of DTs, would be to team him with Shaun Smith. I would have to agree with that statement. Big Sam is known for his ability to use leverage and move people around. This is exactly why I'm looking for a bigger year form our LB's. They will have lanes created and be able to fly around in the vision Marvin had for them when they were drafted. I'm hoping for good things here !!!WHODEY !!! bengalboomer7
Sam's still a upgrade, no matter how you type it out. And this automatically helps our pass rush by freeing up everyone else for one on one. Sam takes up two guys, and is the only player we have along the line that draws that kind of attention. Justin Smith in a contract year will benefit the most, and I think he gets 10+ sacks this year.Plus, this allows B-Rob, Thornton, Smith to stay fresher, thus making them more effective. The_Next_Big_Thing
God told me Sam Adams was a major upgrade and we should cheer this signing. Now where's my Kitna cap?

Stripes
Chalk one up for Hair.I agree with BB7 in the prediction that Justin Smith will have a solid year with a force inside to free him up. I think this will be the year he proves to the Bengals and the league that he is a good end, and gets payed accordingly in 2007.

If he does have a good year, it will pove another thing in that he had a good year due to the play of a big man in the middle helping him out, not really due to his own abilities. Don't get me wrong, I like Justin, just playing devil's advocate a little... WHODEY !!!

Still, I think most of the ends out there that get accollades from the rest of the league have more of a presence inside than John Thornton and Bryan Robinson or Tony Williams. HairOnFire
Bengals | Contract update: S. AdamsThu, 6 Apr 2006 17:47:20 -0700Cincinnati Bengals DT Sam Adams' three-year contract included base salaries of $1.3 million (2006), $1.5 million (2007) and $1.75 million (2008). Stripes
I like that contract... I thought it was front loaded? I guess it could be with incentives, but still I'd have figured the base salaries to more reflect that.

HairOnFire
I like that contract... I thought it was front loaded? It is front loaded. The total worth of the deal was said to be 7.5 million, and the base salaries only account for 4.55 million. Depending on if the incentive package was included in the total worth that leaves a signing bonus of 2.45 or 2.95 million. Let's assume it's the lower figure. Now add in the first year base salary of 1.30 million and you've got a first year hit of at least 3.75, and 4.25 million if incentives are paid.
