bengalskyspy
With all the consternation about Palmer, I wonder if our D will be better this year. My take is that it will, for the following reasons:Madieu back and more matureDexter Jackson next to Madieu improves our safeties 1000%Sam Adams on the DL makes everybody on the line and betterOdell more mature so less rookie mistakes, but same athleticismPollack gets a whole camp and is one year more matureRatliff emerges to take Tory's place, while Deltha moves to superstarArrington could be the icing on the cakeThat's a ton of improvement, with no real downside or losses. Not to mention another year with Chuck B as coordinator. All in all I say Top 10 defense. What say you?
Folz
I don't know about the last two. Ratliff has never impressed me and I don't know if Arrington is realistic. Still a big improvement though.
The_Next_Big_Thing
Put down Spain's pipe. Arrington hasn't even met with the coaches yet. He's not likely to be coming here.
Stripes
With Arrington, I'll say we squeak into the top 14. Without him, we still are at least in the middle of the league. This all, of course, relies on lack of injuries.

kingwilly
...Arrington will be here.....patience, grasshopper....as for your other items, I;d say this D is shaping up into a Top 15 squad...ratliff may never become more than a decent nickel guy..the one I'm hopeful will develop is Body...he is big, long and fast...perfect to handle reps if he can develop his game...Now, throw in another good draft..like, say getting a stud DE like Kiwi, another good LB and maybe another prospect safety...and then we'll be cooking with gas........I predicted Arington to be signed a couple of weeks ago. It may be that he comes on after the draft...when his price wil be forced down by teams faced with signing their picks....
bengalskyspy
Ok guys, get with the freakin program--- dont just make snide comments, what's your take regarding the improvement. I swear I thought I accidentally signed on to a Squeelers site.

Good that we're not wasting our money on him then.Otherwise, I think we're moving in the right direction. I think we'll see big improvement from our young guys...Geathers, Pollack, Odell. But we need help at CB.

Folz
Bringing back Madeiu by itself improves our D greatly. Adding a field general like Dexter Jackson will bring more experience to the defense. Adams will help stop the run. AND WE STILL HAVE THE DRAFT! No problems here. Whur CHad At?
We might improve to like 18th or 19th...possibly better with Arrington, but I dont have high hopes on that happening, although I am all for it.

BlainThePain
I'm guessing 18-20 next year unless we somehow manage to repeat with about the same amount of turnovers and then i would predict an 11 ranking by season's end.
hayburmill
Better on D - Probably middle of the pack.I wouldn't count on Lavar until I see that he is actually signed.Biggest improvement - subtraction of OhHeRanByMe.
derekshank
Our improvement still remains to be seen. Last year when we added Robinson, and switched up Smith and Geathers, there was a lot of talk about our improvement... but it just didn't happen.Adams looks good on paper, S. Smith has a lot of upside, and Pollack should help us a lot with a pass rush... and having Madieu and Jackson back there at safety con only help... but I'm going to be a little more cautious with my optimism this year. It isn't about what it looks like on paper, but how they perform on the field. It looks like we have a lot of upside. I doubt we'll be a top 10 defense... but a top 12 should be good enough to get us in the superbowl with our ball-hawking secondary.

ArmyBengal
"IF" all the people tagged as "upgrades" actually make the impact they were brought in to make and the defense plays as a unit, we could be top 15, but I think that is being overly optimistic at this point in time. Would Arrington make and impact, I would think yes, but not to such a point we move all the way into the top 5-10 range. Lets see how the draft goes and when camps roll around, we might have a better idea.WHODEY !!!
walshfan
I for one am optomistic about the defense and hope the draft will make it even more enticing..The biggest improvements will be Williams back at safety and Odell Thurman having experience now....Adams will lend a hand to the run defense as a block clogger and hopefully Odell doesnt overpursue as much and has the opportunity to fill the lanes more this season..Another corner/safety or DE in the draft would only better the whole situation....I wont put a number on where the defense will be ranked but it should be better..Rankings are misleading sometimes.. I would rather see teams ranked based on each game's consistency...Is a team better that was graded 3 A's a C and a D or 5 C's... ??? So many factors into grading a defense besides yards allowed..... walzav29
I think the Bengals will have to be 1-16 to win the Super Bowl. We've seen and heard it a million times. Come playoff time defense and a running game win the games. I love the Bengals off-season so far. They have addressed needs. Remember our return game sucked last year. Chatman is a huge improvement over Ratliff. I think this will be the defense's big jump year. Everything is in place. Think about Odell, Pollack, Adams, Madieu, Jackson will all be upgrades or better than last year. The 1 question I have is what they'll do with Geathers. cover2
Without Carson the D will be out on the field a lot and often. There will be alot of 3 and out.Lets just hope they don't get worn out before he gets back.........
derekshank
We'll be in the top 25, topsWell, we were 22nd in scoring defense last year... so in your opinon, getting Madieu back instead of KK, adding Dexter Jackson to replace Ohalete, Adding Adams instead of having 2 undersized DT's, having Pollack as a starter with some experience, and a year under Thurmans belt... not to mention what we've do in the draft... will actually make us worse?Look, I agree that a lot of people are being overly optimistic... because it's not all about what it looks like on paper... but we are certainly better off than last year. Top 25? That's just silly.

Top 25? That's just silly.Agreed. I think the odds of the offense having slightly less success next season, (unless we do get that monster TE out of Georgia!) along with the loooong needed defensive improvements towards freakin' finally stopping the run, I see a balance. Both squads hovering about 8th to 12th rankings.I was really down about what next year would be like. Especially the way last season ended. Well that feeling is GONE! ArmyBengal
Well, I agree with the whole thing about what we look like on paper. For further proof of this, look at the Vikings last year. They made a lot of perceived good moves and "on paper" their defense looked great at the beginning of the season, but they weren't all they looked to be. I don't see this being the problem for the Bengals this year, due to the experience we have brought in with our FA signings. We will be better, but how much is still to be determined.WHODEY !!!
