schweinhart
Bring on the DoubleWide Now if the Bengals can upgrade the pass rush off the edge and continue to improve the secondary, they might actually wind up with a decent defense this year. That might do it but it still sounds like he'll cost more than Sam Adams. 1 actual big name (or at least big bodied) free agency signing a decade might be all that can be asked...unless you count Kevin Hardy, Tory James and John Thornton. derekshank
I guess I agree with a lot of what is being said. I'm still not really in favor of bringing in Arrington... because I think the defense is fixed for the most part. With Adams and S. Smith likely sharing time... keeping them both fresh, and Robinson playing adequately on the other side, we now have guys who will take up multiple blockers, freeing up Justin and Geathers... and Pollack will be a great pass-rusher this year. If we take Arrington, (assuming that means a switch to the 3-4) it means we'll be forced to go get another big fat NT type player... or be forced to draft Gabe Watson in the first round. While Robinson would likely play better being moved back to DE in the 3-4... it leaves us with a multitude of undersized DE's. I just think it would be a step-backwards. (not to mention it would hurt us financially in the long term, because to get Arrington is to not extend one of our current studs). Also, I'm not sure I really believe it... but these guys have Adams as the 2nd best DT available in all of FA this off-season. http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=71&p=9&c=12&y...83&rc=16&pid=22If that were true... I imagine he would have been long gone by now. On the other hand... you don't give those big 4-5 year deals to a guy who's been in the league for 12 years... so it is possible that the Bengals just got lucky, and have their short term answer.Hell... it's better than the Browns signing Ted Washington! turningpoint
Adams, 32, will probably team with John Thornton in the starting lineup. That would leave veteran Bryan Robinson and promising youngster Shaun Smith in reserve and give the Bengals one of the deepest and best tackle rotations in the league. I don't know how you go from one of the league's worst, to one of the league's deepest and best with one over-the-hill signing. That said... it certainly can't hurt. skyline
I always cringe when we pick up a 33 year old free agent (or is it 32?), but hey...it's hard not to be a little excited about this one.
BengalszoneBilly
No complaints at all if this really is true. None. Adams is still a difference maker and this line sorely needed one like him, all of ML's protestations to the contrary over the last few years.True. Not even Marvin is right 100% of the time. Finally I can shut the hell up about the team doing nothing to stop the run! From a Browns website:Now everyone can see why Faine is no longer a value at center..he could never move Adams off the los...this is going to make Cincy vera tuff to run up the gut on...Who said Cleveland Browns fans were stupid? These fans know a good signing when they see one! Now, time to throw my personal flag on myself here: In reference to the thread starter "KimoTherapy," dude...mostly due to your name, I used to hate your ass, but you seem on the up and up as a football fan. You make my list as only the 3rd Steeler fan I like/respect. (Well....that, and you posted in the Nascar forum! ) Good luck with Miami in your opener. They're going to be aiming to knock you off, and truth be told...they will. Remember their game early last season against Denver? They waxed 'em 34-10. Nick Saban is a dangerous man!Oh and Kimo, thanks for your concern and research on our beloved Bengals, but your name is f*cking horrible and I would like to punch you in the face because of it.Other than that you seem pretty cool.**Tip to Kimo: Put some boobage in your sig and Ox will lose all ability to punch. His right hand will be busy elsewhere!

Deep maybe in the sense that this gives you a lot of crappy tackles. I'm assuming this spells the end for JT, he's definitely worse than Robinson. At this point, I think it makes Geathers the weakest starter on D unless they're serious about moving Pollack to DE. At that point the weakest starter on D would probably be either LJ, BR, or DJ - and I can live with a D where one of those guys is the weak link. No more Thornton, no more OhellImtoast at S.Im cautiously optimistic about the Adams signing, but this would in no way deter me from taking a DT round 1 if available. I didn't think he'd be worth $4M/yr, but whatever.

And let's face it... we didn't sign this guy to make tackles... we signed him to take up blockers. I very much doubt he will have an impressive stat line... but he'll still be a huge improvement, and hopefully help our DE's. I like the incentive laden deal idea. HoosierCat
Im cautiously optimistic about the Adams signing, but this would in no way deter me from taking a DT round 1 if available. I didn't think he'd be worth $4M/yr, but whatever.Agreed, esp. about still taking a DT early. To repeat something I said in a Sam thread a couple weeks ago, Adams' biggest successes have come when he has a big 2-gap type next to him (Siragusa, Williams). Paying $3-4 million a year for him and then sticking him next to John Thornton or B-Rob is likely to be a big waste of money. Frankly, I think he'd do better next to Shaun Smith...and maybe even better than that next to Gabe Watson.Of course, all this assumes a deal really goes down. Warren Sapp was imminent, too, remember? Larry
Could be writing on the wall for a 3-4, but I still think our base will stay 4-3.
Spor_tees
Well whether or not we switch to a 3-4 comes down to 2 things...if we cut Thorton and if we sign Arrington. If either of those happen, we are definitely a 3-4 team. If we do stay in the 4-3 what will the rotations be? And what happens to Fanane now? I say we couple up one oldy with one young guy. So like the starters would be Adams and B-Rob (If he can stay healthy), and the second string would be Thorton and Smith. But now you are left with Fanane and Askew... Some heads are about to roll I am in the camp that says we still draft a DL in the first round if Bunkley is available. If not go for Pope, and if he isn't available draft a CB/S.If you're happy and you know it your hands!
The_Next_Big_Thing
A Sam Adams sig for you all to share will be ready tomorrow. Off to bed for me.Uhmn I think any Sam Adams sig will be too big for the maximum for these forums I just can't imagine what Big Sam Adams will look like in a Bengals uni. hahaha... should be interesting. But I am very glad to have him.In our orange alternate jerseys he's going to look like a big fat pumpkin! As for this signing, I'm ok with it. I'll wait to see it play out on the field. I still think Sam Adams the player is just as overhyped and overrated as Sam Adams the beer. I hope we still go after a DT in the draft, but this could also be a sign that we are indeed going after a Gabe Watson type in round one and want Adams to mentor him in how to eat too much and how to belch noxious fumes at the offensive linemen without gassing the linebackers behind him to death.
