scott91575
Actually, I assure you, Gabe Watson was quite disruptive in college. Now it may not show in his stats, but his presence alone could strike fear into opposing offenses. Watson is a 2-Gap style intimidator who has rare ability to collapse the pocket and can make plays. He is a two down player at this point, which isn't a problem, because many big DT's are. The guy does have a lot of potential, but I think he may have a higher floor than some of you think. He was a good college player and should be a solid pro. Also, Watson is not exactly fat. The 6'3 1/2 339 pound DT is very solidly built, he Bench Pressed 225 36 Times, which is well above average. He's a very strong, not soft, middle man.I got to watch almost every Michigan game and I heard many of his interviews. First of all, the guy totally dissapears in games. He can be dominant at times, and then simply stops playing. He was benched in the middle of the season due to his lack of effort. He turned it up a little later, but not sure this is his true character or he saw the writing on the wall that his draft stock plummeted. I'm not sure the motor is there to be a top notch player. In interviews he is VERY mild mannered and seems almost comical. He has very little intensity. The physical tools are there, but he needs a labotomy. He could easily be a top 10 pick, but he lacks alot in the mental part of the game. Who knows, maybe he did turn the corner and will be great. Yet I am skeptical of a guy that has a history of taking plays off and lacks intensity. His recent upturn may simply be due to the fact he wanted to raise his draft stock, not that he saw the light. I could be wrong, but I see him getting his millions, chilling out, and being a nice role player. Nothing more.
BengalPappaw
Stroud is a defensive tackle with an impressive combination of size, strength, and athletic ability. He has long arms and is a good inside run defender who is quick at the snap and springs forward into gaps nicely. Stroud flashes exciting tools but doesn't make as many plays as expected from a player with his ability. He would be drafted high more on potential than overall production. TJJackson
The draftdountdown mock makes the key point - if Marvin can motivate this guy, we have a monster DT. If not, we've wasted a TON of money and time. Boom or bust. I honestly think Kiwi is the safer pick at this spot, given who else remains available in this mock at this point, particularly considering that Justin Smith's contract expires at the end of 2006. AGrizzlyBaer
i am totally opposed to the kiwi pick because he just was dominated in the senior bowl matchups
TJJackson
One bad game does not erase a stellar college careerIn the same fashion - but opposite - Gabe Watson had a few games where he was dominant and many, many more where he disappeared.I'll take the more consistent fellow, thank you very much. thepudgester
Playing for a team fighting for a Championship, millions of dollars, and way more girls than this guy could pull on his own...I think Watson gets motivated. haha
BlainThePain
I wouldn't be thrilled if we drafted Watson, but I wouldn't be mad either. I think we have the best motivational coaching staff in the league, and if anybody can get Watson to become determined, I think ML can. The only thing I'm worried about is if he is one of those guys that nobody can change. This guy could be our Jamal Williams or a rerun of Big Duddy. TJJackson
Can we afford to waste a r1 pick on a DT who - as Army puts above - is no better than the schlubs we have now?I say no. We need a player at 24 who can contribute to wins **now**.

We need a player at 24 who can contribute to wins **now**. Well Army said he's no "worse." I really don't see how anyone can be so certain as to what can be expected of Watson. I do think he'd contribute to wins now.
ArmyBengal
I said he was no "WORSE" than what we have, indicating he's better than what we have now. Although how much better is still in question and does he warrant the #24 pick ?? This remains to be seen...WHODEY !!!
TJJackson
Yeah, it really comes down - assumign he is there at 24 - that1) Marvin believes he and his staff can get the Senior Bowl version of this behemoth out there on SundaysAND2) No other player at that spot represents as much of an upgrade to their position as himAND3) a offer to trade down with good value returned is not availableI still think a DE, DB, OT, or possibly even LB will be available who qualify as the better pick at spot 2. Of course, I'd live to see a trade down to pick up another r3 or r4 pick - lots of good players will still be available in those rounds
Kazkal
Well if we do sign him his contract better be heavilly worded to make sure he's not laqzy mofo...I'd be fine with big gabe if we got pope, lewis or simpson in the 2nd
