hes going miami we dont have the $ to sign him and renew the OL

Yes, the Bengals do have enough money to do both. But only if they abandon their long-held position against spending significant cash over cap. And no, that would not put them in any danger of "cap jail." You only get into that position if you spend a lot of cash over cap on many players over several seasons.

I agree, Miami is the most likely spot.

Agreed, the Bengals need to get better at managing the cap. You only get into real problems with dead money. So don't spend tons on signing bonuses for players who will retire or get cut.

I'm interested to see whether he gets an offer like what he's looking for. Last I heard, the Giants thought he was a poor fit for their defense and Miami laughed at the money he was looking for. If he wants a deal near what Julian Peterson got, forget it.

Pretty much sums it up. The Bengals can get someone like Arrington if they want to, they simply choose not to.

And I don't think it is Marvin's choice.

edit: I should add that I think Lavar's asking price right now is probably too much for anyone though, and that waiting is wise - in the Bengals' case they probably have no intention of signing him unless he meets their modest demands, which are probably lower than anyone else's.

You know it is funny, I thought this was Marvin's team, and he had control of who he wanted or didn't want. That all must be false then

Well I think it's obvious he has more control than previous coaches regarding roster decisions, but everything must still go through the Browns when it comes to FA's and big contracts or major decisions.

I wish Katie would take over soon....

For all intents and purposes, she has. She negotiates all the contracts and handles most of the day to day business activities. I'm sure Mikey still runs the show, but nowhere near the capacity that he used to.

I didn't realize teams even signed players they knew were going to get cut. <_<

If Lavar comes, he'll be a part-time playmaker. He'll make a difference on 2 or 3 plays a game, but Marvin won't be able to play him fulltime.

And Marvin pretty much has complete control over his roster, but signing guys like Lavar involves money coming out of Mike Brown's pocket --- not just cap space, and not just a spot on the roster.

Where's LaVar going? To Jacksonville of course. For a visit. Then he'll go back home for awhile while the Jags put out a press release saying his salary demands are too great.

Jacksonville already has a good enough defense as it is.

Teams definitely sign guys they know they'll be cutting eventually (or retiring). That was part of the Redskins' problems a few years ago with guys like Sanders and Smith who retired. A lot of teams also backload veteran deals to the point that they *will* be cut, causing the remainder of the pro-rated signing bonus to be applied to the next year's cap. That's what causes dead money - teams who are paying players who aren't playing for them. The teams who do the best are those who continually go a bit over the cap without screwing themselves with dead money.

As for LaVar, he's still a good bit better than that. If they use him right they won't be able to get him off the field. But I still don't know what he's going to cost.
