Calling all Capologists!

The remaining cap is always a fluid number. Here is one estimate in early March.

$19 million. The Bengals are in the upper half of teams with money under the cap (Some of the teams better than them ate up alot of that cap in FA).

Recent signings and guys soon to be cut will more than likely be a wash. I will assume that the Bengals will sign all of the big 2007 free agents and lose about 10 million from that number. Of course the cap goes up next year, so look for similar numbers. Another nice thing is Rudi's and TJ's contracts were front loaded. Carson's is backloaded so no big jumps will happen due to backloaded contracts.

I'm sure I am missing a few things, but the Bengals are no where near the cap and will continue that way for years to come (unless they actually sign a big free agent, highly unlikely).

We had about $12 milllion before the CBA got extended...cap went up, what, $7 million, so that's about right. Of course, you have to then "Hobsonize" the numbers, subtracting the rookie pool, RFA tenders, and an injury cushion for the season, which total about $9 million. Signings so far have probably eaten up a couple mil...

Good! So lets use some of it! How much does Katie B. need to remodel the kitchen?

I think the rookie pool is near 6 million. So cut the number to 13 million, although unlikely the Bengals at late in the draft touch that number. So more like 14 million. Assume next years FA's eat up 10 million. That leaves 4 million. No major changes with bakckloading as I mentioned before (Palmer's backloaded contract should be a wash with the 2 big front loaded contracts)....that is nice. Then add another 7 million or so for the increase in the cap. That's 11 million minus another 5-6 million rookie cap. Plenty for 1 big free agent.

Fair enough. We can afford one big free agent... but who's it gonna be? LeVar? Let's say if he's not a lockerroom problem, and is the great player that everyone here is pimping him out to be (both of which I question... or he'd be signed by now), where would he fit in here?

I don't want to hear about the 3-4. Gabe Watson was a 4-3 guy in college, so there is nothing to indicate that as a rookie he would be able to handle the NT position in the NFL. And I also don't want to hear about moving Pollack back to DE. With his smaller size he would do no better than Geathers, because we don't have good DT to take up blockers. If we sign LeVar, we're still stuck with out biggest problem... and that is no decent DT's. This would force us to reach for a DT in the first round... (which is incredibly risky) or else risk paying all that cash to LeVar for no substantial defensive improvement. If you're going to spend all that money... you damn well better get real good on defense, and fast... and I just don't see how this would solve our problems.

In my opinion it makes much more sense to use a little FA money to pick up Grady Jackson, and then use the rest of the cap to extend our other stars in the offseason. Jackson won't be the savior of this team... (just like Dexter Jackson isn't) but he's enough of an upgrade to not lock us in to a DT in the first round. You never want to be forced to reach for a specific position rather than the best player.

We really just need to get stop-gap guys who will help to give us flexibility in the draft. It's the way that NE did business to become a dynasty... and they are still unable to hold on to some of their big name stars long-term. What do you think their team would look like if they had gotten sucked in to say a Warren Sapp bidding war? They would be forced to cut even more of their great players.

If you sign a big-name FA... you have to be willing to let go a big name star already on your team later on. So who are we willing to trade for LeVar? Are you willing to give up Levi? Steinbach? How about Chad? No... the way teams that win every year do businees is by drafting well, and keeping their own stars. As much as I would like the excitment of seeing the ESPNews ticker tell me the Bengals signed a star like LeVar... it hurts the team long-term. I'd much rather keep the great players we already have as long as we can... and continue to build greatness through the draft.

Don't count on Grady Jackson to come here...the guy is in talks with the Falcons, and they appear to have offered him a contract.

Don't count on Adams either, because his asking price seems to prob gone up

All I gotta say, why is it so damn hard to sign a backup QB. THis whole situation is pathetic, and I am sick of wasting time on that s**t. Workouts start April 3rd, get a DAMN QB SIGNED NOW

If that is the case then it makes no sense... Going into free agency, he was obviously a very big name as far as DTs go... Now that so much time has passed and he hasn't been signed, I'd expect his price to go down, not up.

So if we added Grady Jackson to go with Dexter Jackson...that would give us 2 Jacksons to go with the 5 Johnsons, 2 Jones, a James, and a Jeanty on the team...That sure would be a lot of J's in the program guide!

And there sure are a lot of repeat names on the team...Johnson (5), Jones (2), Perry (2), Smith (2), Williams (2), and then if you added Grady Jackson, Jackson (2). :o

Do you think Mike Brown is going as far as to save money on the jerseys by having more than one player with the same last name to get a discount?

Damn you sure can tell it is the offseason!

:lmao:

He is gathering much more intrest from more teams, unlike before it was only Miami, and possibly Cincy
