Bengals | Team in the running for G. Jackson

Tue, 21 Mar 2006 21:59:50 -0800

Bob McGinn, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports free agent DT Grady Jackson (Packers) said the Cincinnati Bengals are in the running for his services. They are one of four teams competing to sign him.

Weird. If the Bengals don't sign somebody quickly the locals will blow a forehead. But if the Bengals sign this guy the same posters will say Grady sucks...and quickly blow a forehead. Meanwhile, the Bengals step away from the bidding on a 3-time pro bowl LB and almost everyone is happy.

It's weird, I tell ya.

How many FAs are the Bengals "in the running for"? I'm so sick of all these rumors. I really don't care what we do until the draft. Grab a quarterback, and move onto to looking at the rookies-to-be. We did more than I expected grabbing Jackson. Getting any of these DTs or Arrington would shock me.

I'm one who's screaming that the d-line needs to be addressed, but Grady ?? Yes Hair, I'll b*tch about that one if it happens. Does Grady upgrade what we have already ?? I don't think so, but we will see what happens. I'm all for looking at the draft as I stated before, I don't think there are any DTs left in FA worth it...

WHODEY !!!

The answer is a simple yes.

The closest thing that we have to 6'2" 345 lbs is Shaun Smith and he's only 320. Grady Jackson is only 29 years old (3 years younger than Sam Adams) and could take up two guys on every play. This is our guy.

This is the guy that made Gilbert Brown expendable in GB. I don't think the run defense is the real problem... we need a pass rush, but for all you guys bitching about us needing a run stopping big fat-ass DT... I don't understand the compaint. I'd much rather have this guy than Sam Adams.

Jackson and S. Smith can sub in and out... and hopefully both would remain fresh enough to take on multiple blockers, and free up Justin Smith and Geathers to get to the QB. I'd rather make this move than gamble on Gabe Watson in the 1st round. I'd much rather have a CB in round 1.

I honestly don't know enough about Grady to know if he's an upgrade, but I suspect he is.

Given our DT rotation, even Sam "pretty girl" Adams would be an upgrade...as would Grady or Dalton. But just like B-Rob, none of them would be a significant upgrade. Our problem on the d-line isn't that we don't have enough depth or role players or veterans, which is what all three of these guys would be best-suited for. It's that we don't have a difference-maker. None of them are close to that anymore, if they ever were. That's why, IMHO, of all the FAs left out there Arrington makes the most sense. Yeah, he'd cost a bundle but he would have to be accounted for every time he steps on the field.

If the bundle Arrington would cost doesn't jeopardize extending Steinbach and Levi, then by all means do something...anything.... to get some effing pressure on the QB.

But short of Mike Brown doing the uncharacteristic in regard to Arrington, I think the Bengals can turn to the draft to get penetration from both inside and out. They can also turn to the dregs of free agency to find a cheap stop-gap LDT (probably Lional Dalton or Ron Edwards rather than Sam Adams or Grady Jackson).

In short, the team was 11-6 last year with the defense they had. Their best defensive player -- Madieu -- returns and Odell has a year under his belt. If the Bengals can cover their backside at weakside CB and get some pass rush through the draft, the offense will keep the team in enough games to stay in the playoff picture.

Notebook: Jackson says he felt unwanted by Packers

By Rob Demovsky

PackersNews.com

Even before Green Bay signed defensive tackle Ryan Pickett last week, Grady Jackson had a feeling his career with the Packers was over.

Jackson said Tuesday he never spoke to new Packers coach Mike McCarthy, and the only contact he had with the organization came from one of the defensive coaches, who called to inform him the team had signed Pickett.

“If they wanted me there, they would have made some attempt to sign me,” Jackson said in a telephone interview from his offseason home in Jackson, Miss. “All along, it made me feel like they didn’t want me there anymore. I guess all along they wanted to go in a different direction.”

Jackson said he will visit the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday and has been talking to the Cincinnati Bengals. He said “a couple of other teams” had shown interest, though he wouldn’t name them. He wouldn’t say whether any of those teams have offered him a contract.

He said he’s seeking a deal similar to the one La’Roi Glover signed with the St. Louis Rams earlier this month. Glover, 31, reportedly signed a three-year, $12 million contract that included a $3.5 million signing bonus. To replace the 32-year-old Jackson, the Packers signed Pickett away from the Rams with a four-year, $14 million contract that included $5 million in bonuses.

Jackson called Pickett’s contract “a pretty good deal,” but quickly added he felt he was a better player than Pickett.

“Of course, I think I am,” Jackson said. “Don’t you?”

At 26, Pickett is younger than Jackson and doesn’t have his injury history. He appeared in all 16 regular-season games each of the previous four seasons.

Jackson missed six games in 2004, then missed nearly all of training camp in 2005 while trying to recover from offseason knee surgery. While he was sidelined last summer, he asked the Packers to cut him or trade him, and said he didn’t want to play for the team again. He played in all 16 games in 2005 but was limited early in the season. By season’s end, he was telling people he wasn’t opposed to returning to Green Bay.

On Tuesday, he admitted he realizes there’s little or no chance of that happening now.

“I know I’m probably done there,” Jackson said.

Actually Marvin said he was going to sign a fat guy and a safety. Thats what he wants. Grady is goose. This would be a great signing. Kiss Askew sucks his thumb good bye. One of the coaches called Askew inactive. This is just what we need. A big run stuffing DT to capture the line. The real ? is will we keep Robinson.
