Bengals | Team tried to get Poston to accept offer

Tue, 14 Mar 2006 20:28:13 -0800

D. Orlando Ledbetter, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports the Cincinnati Bengals tried to get agent Carl Poston to agree to terms with the team without consulting with free agent S Lawyer Milloy (Bills). "They wanted us to decide immediately and I can't do that without talking to my client," Poston said. "Lawyer turned off his phone to give all of his attention to Atlanta. By the time that he called me back, they had already signed Dexter (Jackson). I guess they were concerned that they may not get Lawyer."

Come on I thought we were smarter than that. Should of consulted Lawyer before Potson..now we are stuck with Jackson

I hope Mr. Jackson Proves me wrong..he can't be any worse than s**ttburgh new safety Ryan Clark

It is a player we are ususally accustomed to signing...only average

Clark Judge from CBS sportsline sums it up perfectly

I don't get it. So he was a Super Bowl MVP. So was Larry Brown. Jackson didn't work out with the Arizona Cardinals, so he returned to Tampa and had a measure of success there. Now he joins the money grab with a four-year contract. I'm not sure what he gives Cincinnati other than depth at the position. He's not a difference maker. He doesn't make big plays. He was ninth in tackles for Tampa last year and had one interception. In short, he's nothing more than adequate. I'm not sure what the Bengals think they'll get out of him other than veteran depth.

Once again, I hope I am wrong :sure:

The reason why he was 9th it in tackles was tempa bay has a good defense and doesn't hafe to have him stop every single play madieu leading our team in tackles our being near top was a bad thing and a good thing shows he can tackle but shows weakness of our defense

Here is what ESPN Insider has to say about Dexter:

Grade: 67 (Which they equate to adequate player)

Jackson is an outstanding athlete with great quickness and is fluid in pass coverage situations. He closes on the ball, appears to have good overall ball skills and makes more than his share of big plays. He actually plays a little bigger than his size would indicate. He has smooth hips, can turn and run with receivers, comes in and out of his breaks well and has a nice short area burst. However, his quickness is probably better than his overall speed and at times he will get himself in trouble if he has to lock on in man-to-man situation. He closes much better on balls in front of him than turning and running with a quality vertical receiver. He also tends to gamble a little too much trying to make the big play and at times will put himself in bad positions. While he is very aggressive, he doesn't always have the speed to make up for his mistakes.

Take it as you want. It's an upgrade to Crapalete, so I'm happy. Plus, he'll be around longer than Lawyer.

But then again, they only give Carson a 74 and Chad a 91. Peyton and Randy Moss got 98 and 97, respectively.

Jackson might not be all-pro, but I don't think "average" is an appropriate description. And quite obviously, Clark Judge didn't see Ohalete play last year. With the exception of Madieu, Jackson is a notable improvement over every other safety we have. He's a good fit.

And I don't necessarily believe Milloy's agent. In case you're keeping score:

1. The Bengals wanted Matt Schobel but couldn't afford him...according to his agent

2. The Bengals are "in the running" for Sam Adams...according to his agent

3. The Bengals didn't pick another safety over Lawyer Milloy...according to his agent

The more likely version of events:

1. The Bengals had no intention of re-signing Matt Schobel

2. The Bengals haven't even had contact with Sam Adams

3. The Bengals gave Lawyer Milloy one last chance to talk before signing somebody else

Incidentally, Milloy's agent is also the same guy that screwed up Arrington's contract with Washington, and also represented Kellen Winslow Jr. during that whole mess.

Not sure what Judge is complaining about, it isn't like Jackson got big bucks.

Re the Milloy thing: according to Hobson, McCree was actually their first choice. They had him rated higher than Milloy/Jackson/Demps, who they regarded as equal. But they dropped out of the bidding for McCree when the price topped $3 million annually. After that, it sounds like the just dropped down to the M/J/D tier and signed whoever said yes first.

Who cares... we got Jackson, not Milloy. We can argue back and forth what the better move would have been... but my guess is that Milloy would have been the more expensive option, and if the Bengals really felt that he was significantly better, they would have waited a day, rather than just giving up on him to sign Jackson.

Neither guys are known for their coverage skills... and while Milloy might be a "bigger hitter" Jackson is just as sure a tackler... and he's certainly better in coverage than any of the options we had at SS last year. (Besides... even though I'm not giddy about Jackson... I was pretty nervous about spending good money on another DB well into his 30's).

I like it. In fact, I hope they negotiate exactly the same way with Sam Adams.

:bengal: Bengals: Well, there you go. That's our best offer. Do we have a deal?

:monopoly: Agent: I couldn't say. I'll have to run it by my client once he stops talking to another team long enough to turn his phone back on.

:bengal: Bengals: Sorry, we've moved on.

:monopoly: Agent: Waddayamean you've moved on? You just said....

:bengal: Bengals: Sorry, gotta go. We've got a press conference to schedule. You see, it's day 3 of free agency and our fans are already having a hissy fit. Gotta throw 'em a bone before they go completely mental.

:monopoly: Agent: But.....
