Looks like the Vikings are the only other team pursuing safeties as aggressively as the Bengals. We'll probably have one of these guys signed by Monday.

Maybe we could get two...

To joisey's point that they appear VERY intent on checking out all options at safety, it is very encouraging to see them this active....BUT no, Dexter Jackson (former superbowl MVP) is not marginal upgrade over OhIhaveleft. He has been s critical to the Buc's solid D as Rice, Brooks and barber. It is all a balance. He, or any of the others mentioned, would be a major upgrade over Ohwhatever, Herring and Mitchell. McCree would be by next choice...then Demps.

Hope will probably go back to Cowher and crew.

Jackson is a system player with the Bucs. He had no success in AZ aned even after coming back they obviously think he won't be hard to replace. Jackson is not the answer for us...better we draft a Ko or Bing and focus FA dollars elsewhere (tho elsewhere is rapidly narrowing). Demps or McCree woulod be better options; I like Demps better but there's the injury issue. Milloy? Not much interested myself.

Other issue: more Chavous details:

Rams | Contract update: C. Chavous

Sat, 11 Mar 2006 14:24:24 -0800

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports St. Louis Rams S Corey Chavous is believed to have received a $4 million signing bonus, and a $1.5 million base salary for 2006 as part of his new, five-year contract with the Rams. He also is due a $1 million roster bonus, which brings his 2006 compensation to $6.5 million. Overall, his deal is worth $16 million.

Demps huh? I'd be okay with signing him... but he better be damn cheap. He tore his ACL less than 4 months ago. At the SS position, it is likely he won't be 100% until the end of November... maybe later. I'd be pretty cautious about signing him.

McCree would be my first choice... yes he'll be expensive... but he earned it the way he played this year. He is exactly what we're looking for at the SS postion. He can cover one-on-one, and is a very sure tackler... but it likely won't happen.

The Bengals are fans of bringing in risky guys with potential to be great players... so bring on Will Demps and Darren Howard.

I hardly hold the allegation that he "had no success in AZ" against Jackson, if you consider his 80+ tackles, 6 INT, and 1 FF as "no success"...

Saying he is a "system player" should describe all the safeties we are looking at and should be conidered a PLUS...not some offhand negative...as if he has inadequte talent and skills thus can only flourish when surronded by player better than himself....not quite the case for Jackson...

Why TB is cutting ties with him could be a matter of who else is on the roster relative to Jacksons costs. They have Will Allen (Ohio State) behind him in depth at FS and Jermaine Phillips andDonte Nicholson 2nd at SS...showing they have good talent depth in the S spots..Jackson may have also not been a "Gruden Guy"...who knows...maybe he just flat sucks and we'd be fools for signing him? My opinion is he would be a major upgrade to our DB's and offers experiene and skills at a position that was a major weakness of Bengaldom in 05'.

Milloy would be a terrific addition to the secondary. Despite his age he can still play at a very high level; he is a hitter and a natural team leader. Demps is also a fine player. Although he suffered a partial ligament tear, he could still be ready to play in the opener. At any rate, Milloy and Demps would represent a clear upgrade over KK, Herring etc. McCree probably would also, but he has been on three teams in five years and has yet to make any significant impact in the league. I can see why Milloy (age) and Demps (injury) were let go by their previous teams. McCree, however, seems never to have been highly valued by any team he has played with.

As always, Willy, you're entitled to your opinion, but I'm tellin' you right now Jackson is the next Ohalete if we sign him. And if we do and I'm wrong feel free to bring this thread up again. I'll happily eat crow.

But I think he's junk.

There is a Jag I am interested in as a safety, but I think he is listed as a CB

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/133457

Check him out

6 interceptions in 7 years?

hehe, 2 last year, but also look at his tackles, size, and experience

I'm not looking at this guy as Ed Reed, just a solid role player

Uhm, uh, look ever so slighty to your left for another available free agent safety who can even claim experience in the Bengals defensive system :-)

Just keep him and Carl Powell apart :-)

*grin*
