Honestly I'd rather keep Stewart than Schobel. He's a better blocker, and that's the attribute I'd prefer for a backup. Chances are, if we draft a first day tight end, he'll end up a better pass receiver than Schobel, so the loss wouldn't matter much.

I think Schobel AND Stewart are both gone. Think they'll draft a TE and bring up Ghent form the PS....

I agree, I can't see them sticking with either one. Both pale in comparison to tight end prospects in the draft. You bring up a good point in Ghent, I was very intrigued by his peformance in the preseason... I think he might have some measure of a future here.

Matt Schobel is the Korbel of Tight Ends. They call it champaigne, but it stinks. When he makes a catch you think now THATS why he's on the roster. Unfortunately, when he drops a catch you think why the hell is he on the roster, and that happesn far more often than his good catches.

He can't block for squat, and I for one will be glad to see him go. I wanted him gone two years ago, and he has done absolutely nothing to redeem himself.

Too many drops for an alleged "receiving" tight end. Blocks too much like a girl to play every down.

Nuff said. We have some lovely parting gifts for you. Hope you like playing in Arizona.

This position has irritated me as a whole. (Bye Schobel) The whole thing about which TE is on the field tipping our plays might not be exactly correct, but I don't think it's to far off either. To have someone of Pope's ability, completely changes the position for the team and forces the defense to account for the TE's actions.

WHODEY !!!

Before last season, I posted to this forum, talking up Schobel and saying that he just needed time to develop into a quality TE. HA! Was I ever wrong! Clearly, he'll never be the reliable outlet receiver in the middle of the field that CP needs. I wouldn't mind seeing the Bengals draft Pope or Marcedes Lewis, but what do I know about that position? Zero.

How about Vernon Davis (Maryland). That guy is a stud with great hands.

Naaa. Vernon is a great athlete, but he doesn't fit into our system as well as Pope or Mercedes would. But if we did draft Davis, I wouldn't complain. Maybe he could fit well into our system. Who knows?

joe klopfenstein in round 2...if he makes it that far. te is a deep position in the draft this year, and klopfenstein is going to be a great te, if put in the right system. he's perfect for the bengals. he's one of the fastest te's in the draft with great hands. not sure about his blocking, b/c i don't watch that too closely, but that dude will be a steal in round 2, if he's still there. total marvin lewis-type player.

Bratkowski says the club isn’t looking for a specific type of tight end. They want a guy that blocks, but it sure sounds like they also want a guy that is a vertical threat in the passing game.

“We’re looking for a guy that brings something to our offense that we don’t have,” Bratkowski said. “Whatever that might be. We’re looking for a guy that takes pressure off the weapons we already have with our wide receivers and Rudi (Johnson) and Chris Perry at running back.”

From the sound of this, they are looking for a who will function at a high level in their offense. To "take pressure off", to me, sounds like a guy who is going to see his share of passes.

If they choose not to go for a r1 guy (Davis, Pope, Lewis) then Byrd would be my choice. He is very savvy at working the zone and finding the seams underneath. I also liked the athelticism he displayed at the senior bowl, as well as during the season (being out west I caught most of his games at USC). He will be there at 55.

Let's see. Day 1 TE = Kingwilly get new bengals jersey from TNBT....loving it.

If we take a TE in round 1, the only thing that will comfort me about it is that the offense will likely still be incredibly productive for the period of time that Palmer has to sit out.

Other than that though... I'll be pretty upset. I want to see a DE or CB in the first round. If we do decide to go Offense in the 1st round... we better be seeing some moves to fix the defense via free agency... because offense is not our area of need.

My FA wish list includes the TE Brandon Manumaleuna and the DE Darren Howard. This would leave us wide open for a CB in the 1st, and a SS in the 2nd, a good pass rush, and the great blocking good pass catching TE everyone is looking for... but of course, these predictions and hopes never materialize.

Virtually every mock I've seen has Vernon Davis going to St. Louis at #11. Granted, these were pre-combine mock drafts, but I don't see us getting Davis. I'd rather have Pope anyway.

Though I completely agree that we need defense (obviously), I think that the first-round pick needs to be an impact player. I'm not sure that there will be any DL left at #24 that will be impact players, it sounds like there are enough quality safeties to get a good one in Round 2, and I'm not sure about the CB situation. Therefore, if we ended up with Pope in Round 1, I would not be disappointed. He would DEFINITELY provide impact as teams would have to pay if they cheated the edges of the field like they've done for so long against us. The Steelers do this a lot. Case in point being the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, Jerame Stevens has girly disease and couldn't hold onto the ball.

I've looked it over several times, and am now convinced that the right TE for the Bengals to draft is Fasano of Notre Dame, as he is a complete 3 down TE who is hard working, unselfish, and not flashy. He has the size and hands to present third down coverage problems for the opposing defense, as well as another red zone threat.

This is EXACTLY what we need - a team guy, not a me guy, who just flat out produces and it not a liability in EITHER facet of TE play.

He's also denoted as smart with top intangibles.

In short, this is a MARVIN guy.

Fasano is decent, but is he an upgrade over Schobel? Probably not this year or even next year.

i disagree. fasano is apparently the best blocker in this year's crop of te's. never paid much attention to his blocking, but that alone makes him an immediate upgrade over schobel.

i really don't want a tight end first round, for the sole reason that we need a defensive playmaker, and there will be one in round 1. fasano, if he's available in the 2nd round, would be my top pick, even ahead of joe klopfenstein, because he is the best all-around tight end in the draft. pope, lewis and davis all get me antsy in the pants because of their recieving skills, but all (with the exception of davis, who will not even be a choice for us at our pick) are a liability in the blocking game.

it'll be hard to pass on lewis or pope in the first, but it's obvious our defense (primarily the front line) needs help and with guys like gabe watson (among a good group of DL's in this year's draft) available, they will benefit more from that upgrade than a schobel-to-lewis/pope upgrade, especially when we can get a guy like joe klop in round 2, or even 3.
