Week 15 (Saturday 12/16): Vikings @ Bengals Game Thread
AMPHAR replied to HoosierCat's topic in Cincinnati Bengals
Yeah. I knew that the second he caught it. The shame of that is the Burfict and Pac Man melt downs robbed him of what would have been a historic Cincinnati post season memory. He also false started on the play, lol. Not called. There was 1 playoff game they intentionally did not target AJ Green in the first half, In order to fool the other defense. Basically every playoff squad Marvin Lewis ever coached had some weird shit that contributed to a loss and most of its hard to believe. Across the board every position group on a Marvin led playoff squad drastically under performed. -
I meant to say: Refs were correct AND they could have called the Right Tackle for lining up in the backfield, again. Mahomes bitching about the refs is wrong. Correct call was made. Sucks for him. If Mahomes was directing some of his rant towards his teammates, IMO, that's absolutely justified because its inexcusable to be off sides at that point. Bad play and bad coaching, IMO. I

Is the media covering for him? I'm sure he wasn't happy with the call and said shit to the refs. But it sure looked like he was giving shit to anyone and everyone on that sideline. He lost his cool. The ref part is wrong: 1. Boundary WRs often ask refs when lining up. WRs lined up on the inside? I can't say I've noticed that very often simply because the Ref isn't there and its easier to see the ball. 2. Refs could have called the Right Tackle for being in the backfield on the same play. I think Mahomes was giving shit to anyone and everyone on that sideline. IMO, his coaches and teammates deserve all the shit he was serving. To have that play destroyed because of that penalty is inexcusable. Tony Romo stepped in and clearly tried to frame the narrative on the broadcast. Chiefs see that as the best path and are attempting to keep the locker room stuff inside, IMO. Chiefs are good but annoying because they give off a sense of entitlement. I hope the Bengals can go into KC and win. Just call it Browninghead afterward.

By rule the offense must gain 10 yards within 4 plays. They don't let you run more plays if they don't. So for all the crying about Mixon's carries or not using Brown or whatever. They have to gain 1st downs in order for it to happen. They snapped the ball 43 times which I think was 38 plays that counted. That's horrible. They would not have converted more 3rd downs by giving Mixon more carries. There are bad clips of offensive linemen running into each other on different running plays. Its just bad, very bad. Browning has to deliver a football without starring down his target. He could have thrown at least 3 picks. He simply was not good. They were lucky to carve out the 1 TD drive they got.

Punter is horrible. I'm a little surprised Simmons has rode with him this long. Just from last week before the end of the half he kicked one that landed on the goal line and didn't give the coverage time to even attempt a downing inside the 5. That turned around and gave Pitt momentum to attempt a end of half drive, came close to giving up points. Down inside the 5 they probably draw in the reigns and play field position. Very disappointing considering how much he was hyped up after the draft.

I personally would steal an O-line scout from the Ravens. Promote them as an assistant to Tobin or whatever. Just going off perception they have found several good solid starters and their guys are hunted during Free Agency. Then I would look at a new line coach. Although the talents of Lamar Jackson extremely helps any running game. Fans can't be happy sitting around happy with 2/3 sacks a game and less than 4 YPC. But ultimately if the local scribes have any credibility, I would expect the Bengals to be RT shopping or trying to extend Williams first. I think Callahan was asked this week about the lack of roll outs. The response was Pittsburgh ends just want to kill the QB they won't care about the fake. That's basically saying they have faith the front side of the defense is not going to get blocked so the damage Mixon could do is limited they don't have to worry about back side pursuit. Its the same issue for years. Opposing defenses get away with rushing 4 and have too much success at getting home. They play light boxes and still keep running game in check or non factor. If some team rushes 4, then Joe should read a book 95% of the time. Teams are never coming out of deep safety looks because the run game is 3 yards. Why would any defense stop playing that way?

Last year it was floated that the Bengals aren't going to use premium picks on Offensive tackles due to the increased difficulty in projecting College players at that position into the NFL. That's why they shocked everyone and signed Brown. If that theory wasn't complete Bullshit from the local scribes. I'd expect the Bengals to entertain resigning Jonah Williams and if not taking whatever cap dollars they offered to him and go after a guy with NFL tape. I don't think they want to risk a complete whiff with the first round pick. Let's say Myles Murphy is not better than what he is today. Yes, that's a bust. But you can still get him enough snaps (without injury) in a rotation to come up with a couple sacks a year. Unless there is injury, a bust at OT isn't helping them much at all. See Jackson Carmen he's only helping if a starter goes down. DE scenario holds true with CB, WR. Snaps counts (without injury) are playing more guys at those positions. Teams are routinely playing 3/4 DEs, 4/5 CBs or DBs. 4/5 WRs. If that theory from last year just wasn't some draft coverage bullshit, I do not expect Bengals to draft OT with No. 1 pick. Regardless of pre draft hype. There is a strong likely hood there will be some CB, WR, DE with equal draft hype to any OT expected to be there when they pick. For the record I would love the Alabama tackle. But the reality is Jonah Williams was an ALL-WORLD tackle in his age group from the time he played pee-wee ball. Most fans would call him a draft bust (I would disagree), but most fans would. Same with Andre Smith (I would disagree). Leatherwood was a bust but still a high pedigree lineman prior to his NFL days. I don't expect the Bengals to venture down this path.

Bengals are projected to have $70m in cap room. With 17 UFA, some of which are very important contributors. Most importantly that $70m in cap room includes $9.8 for Chase so an extension is certainly possible.
-
I think Joe Burrow is coming to the LOS with options and freedom to change play a large percentage of the game. The resulting ratio and targets are going to be based on how he interprets a defense. I think the days of calling "54" cross power trap and locking Burrow into that play are long gone.
-
There is no shit creek in the NFL sitting at 5-5 with a franchise QB. This was true in the 80s. Its certainly true with an extra game and extra playoff spot.
-
Burrow/Chase. I'm not sure why anyone would completely count them out. That's why the whole NFL ranked them top 5. That's why the whole NFL would have dumped a ton of money in their lap. The fun part is Baltimore can say the same thing about some of their players. I think the Bengals come out on top in a tight game.
-
Ravens are up and down just as much as the Bengals and have had injuries just the same. Sure them winning puts them in the driver seat, but I would not crown them. Anyway the Bengals probably win tonight and I wouldn't crown them either. The NFL is smart with TV. There will be playoff scenarios out the ying yang the last 3 weeks involving probably the majority of the AFC. I would think any team hovering around .500 this late with Burrow at QB would be involved in quite a few of them. Probably a few division scenarios as well. Any talk of "must win" is just another uninformed useless hot take preying on emotions.
-
The NFL is designed for this type of drama week to week. Each week is a new set of hot takes on how the season progresses. When there was only 6 seeds, 5-5 was a decent spot to be in. Adding a game, Adding a playoff spot, and back loading the schedules with division/conference games probably makes 5-5 a better position than before. Nothing is earned or lost regardless of the results tonight. The results simply kick off a new set of hot takes. Any team hovering around .500 this late that can reasonably expect high level QB play as Burrow and Jackson have shown; should not be counted out of anything with 7 games to play, IMO. I would not count Houston out because CJ is playing very high level football. But if you look at it reasonably. It took an awesome QB game from CJ along with 2 4th quarter Ints, and a dropped TD pass to stop the Bengals from winning 5 in a row. The Bengals probably roll tonight in a tight one, but they aren't in the clear for playoffs or division.

I think the $7m over includes the roll over of $34m if I'm reading Spotrac correctly.
-
Ouch. They made some cap decisions, which I assume was to capitalize on a window. Well last year eroded because of suspension, this year just tragic bad luck and Watson was not an elite QB ever this year. They have some cap headaches that are not impossible to overcome but they'll have to draft extremely well or hope they did these past couple years. Cleveland looks to already be over next year's projected cap by $7m and have 22 guys hitting some form of FA. Not good.

I just keep wondering when the pitch forks are going to come out for Pollack like they were for Alexander. Alexander had years in which his line allowed less than 20 sacks and was still a punching bag. Last week vs. Bills following an INT, a slew of OL penalties completely shit canned a drive to a point they couldn't even attempt a FG. This week vs. Houston there were so many untimely sacks and penalties its sad. Fans just seem to be OK with a 2/3 sacks a game average with 8/9 QB hits/pressure. It'd be a miracle to be below 35 on a season with this guy.

Boring fundamental football gives the best chance to slow Lamar. Contain, don't rush past the Qb, tackle. As soon as 1 element falls out of place, good chance he will burn them. Very difficult to do because they have an array plays that they option the DE in the run game as well. But tackling is the biggest issue because they are going to get theirs with that O-line just try to limit the damage. The one down side to Logan and Pratt is they tackle the football and that can lead to a few extra yards. The Ravens are league leaders in fumbles so hopefully the Bengals can pop one loose and not give up too many extra yards in the process of trying to create fumbles. But you can see in every game vs. Ravens the DEs are not hell bent in beating the tackle around the edge in pass rush. They try not to rush too deep because you can't let Lamar up in the pocket. Similar in the run game there's a lot of option action with Lamar and a RB. A lot of times the DE has to be disciplined in holding ground.
-
They should also open a Blantons station, only to be sold out and never available.
-
FC Cincinnati sells "das boot" which is a plastic mug in form of a leg and foot/soccer cleat. Its 20+ oz. Refills cheaper once you buy "das boot". Cincinnati Bengals need to sell " Das Mcpherson Leg" draft beers.
-
I'm leaning towards cheering for Browns. Of course Bengals must beat Houston. If they do, then they are tied in the loss column going into Baltimore on Thursday.
-
Elite QB. Elite WR. The 2nd tier skill guys are very capable on this team. The TEs are specialized for example: Sample's TD was off Max protect vs. man coverage. When his guy added to the blitz on the outside, Sample released and Joe properly recognized it and Sample showed a good deal of athlete by getting in the endzone. 2 first down receptions to Tanner were off screen actions to Chase, the defenders jump the screen and Tanner fake blocks and slips in the secondary. Irv's TD was direct result of Buffalo using 3 people to cover Mixon and Chase on the opposite end; leaving Irv to beat 1 v. 1 coverage. My guess they'll continue to work all 3 these guys in based on their strengths and whatever mind games they are playing with the defense.
-
Just hope the Raiders can hang a loss on the Chiefs.
-
Classic trap game.
-
Striped Jungle was cool. OL played great. Left some points on the field so not a perfect game but very good. Pass rush was mostly focused on limiting play extending ability of Allen. TE is what it is. They play multiple guys at the spot and eventually the Franchise QB will find them when the coverage dictates IF given time to do so.

Hit one the other day. Amazingly no damage to the car. I have no idea how that happened, but glad it did.
