  1. Hard to see where Boling fits at center with Cook, Robinson and that kid on the PS already in the mix. IMO Clint ends up where he ought to be, backup guard.

At LT don't forget Hawkinson. By all accounts they are high on him.

If you had to choose, Collins or MJ, I'd rather have Collins. There is far more depth ready to absorb his loss.

LT is maybe the second most critical position on offense, I don't see the logic of letting what's proven to be an excellent player walk, and be replaced by a wholly raw and unproven guy. Not worth the risk.

A rookie DE is far less likely to get someone killed.

Quick extra about Alexander. I am incensed that they've stashed Collins, unable to figure out how to put the best possible combo out there earlier. All these LGs...

I'm sure that the Bengals will sign Collins and forego drafting a replacement, mostly because they can't count on a top LT falling to them.

But in spite of Hobson's mancrush on Collins, what I see is a guy that got benched in the second half against Ravens, and then failed to show up the next week-- for a playoff game. I think he's a headcase and that this premium position is simply not solved. Hope I'm wrong.

  2. hey, I'm hopeful. Flacco stunk in his first two seasons of playoff games, then got decent/good in year 3.

Andy's got more pressure on him than Flacco ever did, since Ravens team didn't depend on the QB as much as the Bengals depend on Dalton. If Andy comes through, then the contract decision gets very easy.

I also think that this offense doesn't actually believe in itself. It doesn't come back well, doesn't perform well in national games, and can get out-physicaled by the better defenses. A great performance by Dalton in a playoff game would help the offense to believe in itself, and I think that we'd see a quantum improvement in results both this year and in future years.

conversely, if it sucks again, I foresee more of the same in years to come.

no pressure Andy, but Sunday's game is a BFD...

  3. I don't that "nationally televised" is particularly relevant. Rather, I suspect the fact the games are out of the Bengals' normal time slot has more to do with it. Marvin has harped on how he'd like a full slate of Sunday 1 pm games for years.

FWIW since 2011 the Bengals are 9-3 at home on Sundays at 1

It certainly seems like a great set-up for Dalton to finally have a good nationally televised performance: a home game against a West Coast opponent playing in the early slot; not the most physical opponent; not an opponent that's going to run away with a game.

but Andy surely feels a lot of pressure, too, after two crap playoff performances and with all of that money at stake when his contract expires.

if team loses and Andy puts up a 55 QBR, things'll get ugly around here.

  4. Dalton's QB game ratings in nationally televised games (Monday night, Sunday night, Thursday night, playoffs):

    51.4 (2011 playoff game) loss

    65.3 (2012) loss

    56.4 (2012) loss

    74.2 (2012) win

    44.7 (2012 playoff game) loss

    81.7 (2013) win

    55.4 (2013) loss

    86.4 (2013) loss

well, well below his career average. He's been a little better this year, but started pretty slow in those two 80+ games. As stated many times, the Bengals really need Dalton to start games strong because this is not an offense that can change a game's momentum.

team won only 2 out of the 8 games

  5. I would venture to take a guess that when MOST teams put themselves in a 21-0 hole, it's difficult engineering a comeback of that size.

true, although he had chances to swing the momentum when we were still down 7-0 or 14-0; would have been easier.

Bengals changed game momentum in Packers, Bills, Browns, Lions games, and went on to win. But each game had a momentum swing due to big plays by B's defense or teams. The closest thing to an offensive-driven momentum change was in the Colts games, after Colts came back from 21-0 to make it 21-14, when the Bengals offense put up a TD. That's not quite a pressure situation since Bengals were ahead, but I was most relieved to see those 7 points. As I recall, Colts had two dumb penalties to extend that drive, which you can't always count on. But, hopefully it's something to build on.

I think the Bengals offense is still very young and needs to chill a little when the game goes against them. They need to believe that they can lead a comeback, and thus far, they don't believe. And with few such results, why would they?

  6. Andy's a great frontrunner, and to his great credit he helps to put the team into position to be frontrunners. He comes into all games well prepared and consistently gives the Bengals leads, especially against weaker defenses.

but when things go poorly early for the Bengals, he can't change the game's momentum, especially against top defenses. Pittsburgh was the latest example. When the Bengals do come from behind, it's usually due to momentum-changing plays by the defense, and possibly the special teams.

here's hoping the Bengals get off to good starts in the playoff games.

  7. I'm okay with them doing things as-is. Gruden is getting a really good mix of personnel, which limits the snaps any one player will get but makes sure we have fresh people and a ton of different looks going on. Seems to be working anyway, which is no shock considering how much talent we have.

I'm not OK with it. Need to get Marvin more offensive snaps, and take him off the punt team too

if he's going to take heat off AJ, then he needs to actually be on the field.

  8. We need to dominate t.o.p.

I'd settle for breaking even. Bengals have won a couple of games in which the opposing team had a huge advantage in plays: Lions ran 19 more plays than Cincy, and Packers ran 21 more. giving Aaron Rodgers 21 more plays isn't my recipe for consistent success.

I think that we're pretty fortunate to be 5-2.

  9. Anyone else thinking about how Hawkins is going to add yet another speed dimension to the offense ??

in fact, might no teams duty even mean that Jones would be free to become number 2 receiver, displacing Sanu?

With the way this offense shuffles its receivers around, I'm not really sure that 2 v. 3 really makes that much of a difference.

Sanu is getting 30-35 more offensive plays per game than Jones, BMO

  10. Anyone else thinking about how Hawkins is going to add yet another speed dimension to the offense ??

I was actually thinking how Hawkins might take offensive plays away from Marvin Jones.

on the other hand, if Hawkins displaces Jones as ST gunner, the Jones might be more available for the offense.

in fact, might no teams duty even mean that Jones would be free to become number 2 receiver, displacing Sanu?

  11. Dalton's up for the "Never Say Never" award?

I'm not laying low in this discussion, but I don't want to be a boor either. Andy's never been the kind of QB that engineers 4th quarter comebacks, particularly against good defenses. And that hasn't changed this year. When Bengals swing a positive change in game momentum, it's usually due to the defense. Last week, the big momentum changer came from return teams

    Andy "NeverSayNever" Dalton?
