Losing Hawk is a bummer but best of luck to him...except during those two games a year he will face the Bengals.
-
Just noting the Ravens signing Steve Smith. A very good pick up, will help Flacco.
Browns have spent quite a bit, and have made some nutty decisions (dumping QBs, starting LB).
Steelers have gotten a bit thin losing key guys, and only picked up on D.
I look at how New England reloaded. Good FA signings. Only huge deal is really for Revis. All the others are smart plays. LaFell, Browner, Edelman...

"They easily could have payed MJ."
Why would they?Gilbert did just fine in limited action and they Spent a second round on hunt for a reason To Replace MJ.
"They easily could have paid AC. "
Well he's always been a Fan Favorite i'm In Different in losing him all it means is we are Drafting a OG or LT early.
Rather Have money go to more important players like Burfict,Green & Dalton and just draft a OG.
Bengals have what 30million in cap? Vontaze is going to cost 6-8million a Year,AJ Green is going cost anywhere from 10million to 15 and Dalton well even Average Quarterbacks are expensive ...
1. Because Geathers went on IR. Because Hunt is raw as heck. So, leaves Dunlap and Gilberry. Now what?
2. What is more important than a young, highly skilled LT? It's maybe the second most important spot in the NFL, behind the QB. Also, Whit is on the downside, and there is no other vet depth but Roland. What's that? Draft one? That's hit or miss. AC is a far better value and far more proven than anyone they can get in the draft. Any other decent vet FA will be just about as much money, for an older guy with less upside.
Bengals have 30m in cap, and it's gone up in FA, due to cuts like Cook, Harrison , not down. They could have over 40m if they make the moves needed. I don't want to hear one word about resigning Dlaton until he wins a playoff game. Burfict and Green will get top shelf coin, but there is plenty of time. When that time comes, others will be on the outs, like Whit, BJGE, Peko, Newman, Jones, Hall... Heck, that's another 15m right there. See, it all rolls along.
I sense the Benglas are watching the potentials walk right by.
Edit to add, I'm really glad they did not sign Weeden. If they had, I'd have to assume that either SoP or Lil' Pumpkin' have a thing for ginger trigger men.

Lame.
And poor timing, against the backdrop of an idle free agency period.
-
When was the last time this team had 4-5 pro bowl level players on it ??
Well now it's 2014 for those following along and ask yourself another question.
How much do you think it will cost to keep 4-5 pro bowl level players on your roster when their time comes due ??
One more ??
How much does that leave you to spend on the rest of the team to round out the roster ??
Bonus question...
How much do you think that allows a team to be active in free agency ??
My point is, this team hasn't had the kind of talent that is currently possesses and YOU CAN'T PAY THEM ALL.
They easily could have payed MJ.
They easily could have paid AC.
The hard choices to make that happen would have meant making cap room by dumping others. Making that room could have easily been done by letting Hall go. That Cook was cut also made room. Harrison going also made room. That's more than enough.
Heck, they could have made a run at a guy like Revis, with the cap room they have, at a position of serious need. To me Hall, Newman and Jones are all big question marks. There won't be a Revis available in Sept at cut down to snatch up.
Had they done this, and kept AC and MJ no one would be belly aching (at least me).
As it is, they've cut Cook and dumped Harrison, and didn't do enough to keep AC and MJ. I have to think they believe they have enough depth to absorb these losses, and with a strong draft reload. Then, pick up a player or two from camp cuts.
I hope this plan works because they've sat idle and watched the talent move around the league, shifting power everywhere but here.
-
I'm not that pessimistic. They havn't even drafted yet.
How they approach that is the next item to assess. As it is, losing MJ and AC are significant but not fatal.
How players come back, like Atkins and Hall (and the LBs), is more important than MJ and AC.
-
I'd be more impressed with Alexander if he could have taken and made something out of the Guychick's, Kooistra's, Otis Hudson, Reggie Stephens, Luigs, Santucci, Keift, Leyva, Coats....
Certainly more busts than bangs.
-
I for one have never said that I am pissed by any stretch.
Lets all take a quick breath and revisit some moves.
MJ is gone- Shouldn't shock anyone. Gilberry had 7.5 sacks last season, Geathers is healthy and they drafted Hunt.
AC is gone- A bit surprising, but then again, the word is Whit wanted the LT spot and if that's the case, then it shouldn't shock anyone.
Cook is gone- Most people LOVE that move.
Harrison is gone- How much of an impact was the guy ON THE FIELD ?? Loved the attitude, but he didn't do much.
Hawk possibly leaving ??- Most don't think the Bengals should have matched to begin with and they have depth to replace him.
MJ leaving is no surprise. I'd prefer hed stay but they do have depth to keep Dline strong.
Harrison, not a huge loss.
The surprises to me are Cook and Hawk.
Cook moving on is a plus. Robinson is a better player. There are a couple of guys in the draft they might consider who would have immediately been better than Cook.
As of now, Hawk is a loss but could be a non-loss depending on contributions of others, the draft and the new scheme changes. If anything, it means Eifert/Gresh/Sanu will get more touches.
AC leaving does sting but there are vet FAs, and the draft, to get solid depth. Its not like keeping Whit at LT is a downgrade, but Pollack at LG may be a downgrade from Whit. Overall, I think we are fine.
Now, they must go get some guys. Make a run at a few key guys and bolster dpeth and talent base. Blount, Freeman, Spikes, Thrumond or Browner.... those would be smart moves.
-
Now it is news that the Bengals wont match Hawkins offr sheet.
So, WR in draft (at least) now maybe a slightly higher priority.
-
Only time for a quick comment because I'm already late for an event but: I will bet the farm that the Bengals were willing to go $6 million a year, but were NOT willing to promise Collins the starting LT job. Lap was on Lance's show yesterday and he said that Whit wants to play LT, whatever he may say in public. I know it's heresy to say anything bad about Saint Andrew, but this could at least partially be on him.
Yep. With Pollack signed, and Whit privately wanting the stay at LT, They did not need to overpay for AC. It makes sense but I view the reality that. AC at LT and Whit at LG is better than Whit at LT and Pollack at LG (and now AC in Tampa). Better to have AC here, and have Whit do what's best for the team.
I think the oline will be OK unless there is some serious injury. Getting another T (like a good vet FA) should be high on the to do list.
-
So, still a concern for me, overall, is:
CB - age and injury indicate a couple changes are possible. Not to sound like a broken record but Hall has an untenable cap number considering his injury history and status. That needs fixing, in one form or another. Newman and Jones are one borrowed time but deserve chance to win jobs. Kirk and CLH are only other depth. Adding here is a must. A gamble like Thurmond or Browner, with t and c for them incurring a suspension to protect. A high draft pick here is also likely.
O-line - no AC means the only viable Experienced backup T is Roland. Not exactly making bengaldom turn cartwheels. Adding a decent vet FA would be a smart move. Zach Strief would be a smart play. Drafting a guy is also highly likely. Maybe even in r1.
RB - BJGE is the Manila file folder in the office products of the NFL. Plain and average. I think this squad is due some youth and pop. To me, Ben Tate is a clear fit but might want more than Bengals are willing to invest. Legarrete Blount is a scary back, that can dish punishment, and would be a hit in the AFCN and with the town. Cheap and young, get him.
WR - color me underwhelmed with the Sanzenbackup and Whalen duo. I'd prefer a bit more size and experience. Panthers just dumped Smith. Interesting. Lafell is also a young and underrated player. Emmanuel Sanders is also interesting but the overall identity of the O could be shifting so the need here is slightly less. Adding one key guy would be ideal. Drafting a raw talent also an option.
QB - well discussed Josh Johnson view (was a Gruden guy) could mean they'd prefer someone with more upside or a Hue guy. For upside, I'd prefer josh Freeman. A Hue guy, could be Jason Campbell. Both have far superior arms to Dalton, and in a run first O, pressure would be off. At least the depth is stronger with either on the team in reserve mode. Also could be plan B in case Dalton truly can't progress.
I'm OK with the status of the D line, LBs and TEs. Even safety is looking ok with Mays back and Williams no longer a rook. Iloka is the undisputed started IMHO, so he and Nelson anchor the spots.
Honestly, I don't see how or why this is so difficult. Good lord.

I am comfortable with the LB group.
Porter, Joiner and Lamur coming back. Harrison, Rey M., and Burfict in house, and Vinny Rey coming back (crossed fingers). They also have guys like Dimanche and JK, so there is quality dpeth.
Also, Taylor Mays is signed, so they have their hybrid LB/S monster to factor.
I get what you are saying, but two of the starters (Harrison and firstnameRey) are both free agents after this season.
Many would argue that both of them don't really amount to much and could be upgraded.
I like Harrison's impact on the young guys and think Rey M. would be a good backup.
Everyone else mentioned (minus Vinny, who's not signed) is coming back from an injury.
I like the thought of the guys like Dimanche, Joiner, and especially Porter, but I won't call my level "comfortable".
If everyone comes back healthy, yeah, i'm much closer to that.
It will be interesting to see how the team views things, because I never saw Cook getting the axe either.
I have no concern with them coming back healthy. Only Lamur had a true season ending injury. Porter and Joiner were strategic IR moves, stashed them to protect them.
Malaluga could still be cut, he counts almost $4M in cap, so the draft or a vet FA could still be in play. There are many attractive LBs on day two and three.
Harrison is showing decent versatility, playing the 5 technique here and there, so there's that in case we are light at DE due to injury or whatnot.
Moves I feel are necessary are Rey M. and Leon H. cut. Sad move for Hall but this is a business and the product is winning games. Well, for most teams.

Kick the tires on Revis?
Gone to the Pats, one year, $12 million.
Stupid Kraft & Belichick don't they know FA is a waste of money????
Yep, and had they made a couple of moves Revis "could" have come here. Dump Hall, dump Malaluga, and there is the net nothing cash.
It's simply too hard to run an NFL franchise. None of us have the IQ to even fathom the math involved.
Penis.

REALLY PISSED ABUT THIS
Ian RapoportOn OT Anthony Collins deal with the #Bucs: It’s a five-year deal for $30M, per source
This was (and is) very, very, VERY DOABLE money for us
6 million a year?
COME ON
If it was 10 mill, I'd understand. 8 or 9, sorta kinda
But only 6?
F*CK YOU Mike Brown!!!!!!!
I agree. Keeping AC at Left Tackle meant prolonging Whit's career, letting him slide inside to LG. Whit could have re-upped in 2015 to extend, and make another chunk of guaranteed $.
I'm not liking how this shaped up.
When they have guys like Hall on his second achilles tear making a big chunk, they let AC walk. It's disappointing.
It also starting to smell like the Bengals could be regressing into old ways, staying way below the cap with the old "rookie/injury pool" PR spin.

Kick the tires on Revis?
other guys I'd like them to give a look:
Ben Tate
Chris Clemons
Peppers?
Freeman
-
Speaking of QBs, the Clowns just dumped Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden. I think Campbell will find a market, but I wouldn't mind kicking the tires on Weeden as a potential backup. Never thought he had anything resembling a chance in Cleveland.
There is only one FA qb I'd like them to take a look at: Freeman.
yes, laugh all you want.....har har har. but he has the higest upside of any of them. I'd even state he has higher upside than half the starters in the league, too. Certainly higher than any QB on Minny, NYJ, Buf, Miami, Jax, STL, Oak, KC, Cle, Houston, Ten.
Give him a 2yr deal with Hue getting his work ethic and attitude dialed in, and we'd have a legit option in case Dalton falls flat.

I'm feeling good at LB.

CB and D-line is another story.

Cook on the street. Mild surprise. I noted he could be cut, based on salary v production. But this is a good. Robinson would be my choice at C.
Any chance they could still keep AC? Man, I hope they could pull it out.
-
Derek Carr anyone?
He's now rumored to be in the 21-25 range.
Could be.....
Not interested.
He reminds me of Blaine Gabbert in that he will rise into the first round, but doesn't really belong there.
I'm hoping his career goes better than Gabbert's, but I won't be surprised when it doesn't.
Yeah, I get the same impression from him, even though they're really not that similar. Carr is more experienced and much more productive at the college level than Gabbert was coming out. I've been meaning to watch some more of his games to get a better feel because I feel like I'm not being fair to the guy.
If Derek Carr reminds anyone of Blaine Gabbert, then you have either not watched Carr at all, or have a highly inflated view of Blaine Gabbert.
have a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5wr82ZRUjc
Might as well be comparing Russell Wilson to Jeff Blake becuase of height.

BIG NEWZ!!!!
Mike Pollack signed.
/>http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/Bengals-exerting-homegrown-policy/bbe5b45c-26a1-4e00-8045-b088354d8fa4That's it folks, we're done, cap space zero, see you in September!
I mean, if you figure the rookie pool, injury pool, signing our RFAs.... they are essentially broke! <turns out pockets>
Clearly none of us knows how hard it is to run an NFL team.....

Oh, I have no doubt they have a plan, willy. It's the same plan they use every year: sit on their hands at FA's opening bell, wait for "the market to come to them" and draft a replacement if it doesn't.
The tight cap has helped them the last couple of years, especially last year with Moobs. But the last-minute catapult in cap space this year may bite them in the butt. MJ is almost certainly gone. I had hopes for AC but they have fallen as the cap has risen. I don't think it will take a big deal for them to let go of Vinny; something it the $3-4 million/year range would probably do it. That's what they're paying First Name Rey and I doubt they pay that for his backup. As for Hawkins...I don't know. But I would hate to see yet more WR churn.
We'll see.
While Vinny played amazingly well, that they tendered him as the first step is a lame move. He played at starter level, should be easy to justify him being re-signed at adequate value. They do have a really deep LB group but with so many coming back from season ending injuries having him in the fold makes good sense. If I am GM on a LB starved team, like the Giants, Cowboys or Falcons, I'd make a run at Vinny and start him right away.
Hawkins may just be a casualty of the shift to running quite a bit more. Consider Green, Sanu and Jones above him on the chart, and Greesham and Eifert looing to catch more balls, he might not have a clear role for the price he'd be looking for. For Hawk, I'd be looking at places like NE, Jets, AZ or Oakland to get more snaps and looks.

Miami is rumored to have AC on its short list of FA tackles to pursue. They would prefer Monroe or Albert, though.
Given the train wreck in the Miami locker room last year, it's tough to see Monroe or Albert there. They will have other suitors. AC probably too, but Miami could get desperate and throw a wad of cash at him.
I noted this in another thread that Miami is where he will end up if he is not re-signed. They are in bad shape and I think AC is probably the best value of all the FA OT's, and also in the top 3 or 4 in ability. What's not to like about Anthony Collins? I just don't get it. Media can downgrade him for lack of starts but I think that's just silly. He sat behind Whit and Fat Andre, two very very good tackles. He's been a patient and loyal teammate. I can also recall him generally being the first guy into the endzone to find the player who scored and be there to celebrate/congratulate.
Edit to add:
the lowest tender being placed on Sanzenbackup and Baby Hawk indicates they could be looking WR in the draft. Dangling them out there with no compensation says they have a probable contingency plan.
-
Hard to argue with this. If it fell like that i would offer no complaint. Swanson is extremely underrated, imho.
Bengals Draft
in Cincinnati Bengals
Posted
Hoosier, you always know the draft values. What would it take for the Bengals to move up to assure snagging Gilbert? Say at 12-15?
I think he's an elite player, will be bound for serious accolades.
