Holy cow does this Buckeye fan LOVE this pick.

Not much more you could ask for in the 2nd when looking for a future starting outside corner. Considering injuries to others, his days of starting may come sooner.

There are some ancillary aspects of this pick I love as well. Along with the fact he’s simply a really good CB, he was Dax Hill’s running mate in Michigan. That allows for familiarity and a level of comfort between those two as they grow into starters in this defense.

    Really pleased with this pick…

    A+

Agreed. He is a bit light but that’s ok.

Hard to believe Jacksonville giving up an a first rounder 3 games into their second season.
I know Henderson has been injured, but what else?  Just not a fit under Meyer?

Just stinks that Apple has been here exactly what he's been everywhere else.
Dude just never translated his game from college.  Shame.

Just need a properly motivated and healthy Waynes. Cmon Trey!! The team needs your best bro.

Wow, I finally tune into watch a Steelers game and I see a professional team.  Not a bunch of babies letting their emotions get the best of them.
That is something you just didn't see in this game with Melvin as the coach.  They were always outclassed on top of always losing.
If nothing else, I really enjoyed seeing the team act like pros out there in the process !!

Burrow getting more confidence in his knee is a HUGE plus and confirms what I thought in that it's simply going to take time.
The more his confidence grows in his knee, the more we are going to see him get back to his former self.

Logan Wilson has been  fun to watch out there and is it just me or every time Pratt is close to the ball he goes for the strip.
I love seeing the aggression out of him and have to think sooner or later that's going to pay off for the defense even more.

I can recall watching the game highlights of Burrow leading up to us taking him #1 overall and every time he threw one to Chase, I would think how cool it would be if the Bengals ended up getting him as well.  I simply never thought it would happen because I felt they were so locked in to getting o-line with that first pick.  Seeing the two of them lighting things up to start the season has been really fun.

Carman Jackson had an amazing first start from what I watched and I really focused in on him.  It will be interesting to see how he grades out, but I don't even care.  The results speak for themselves.  On at least 2-3 occasions I watched him engage his opponent and once his guy was out of the play, slide over to help either Hopkins or Reiff with their assignment.  It was really impressive to see that kind of awareness out of the rookie in his first NFL start and at a new position.  Really hoping they don't make the mistake of putting one of those other clowns back in and benching him moving forward.  He's going to make mistakes, just let it happen, because I'm betting you are going to see more good than bad.

I think Hoosier may have said it previously, but CB has to be in play for their first round pick in 2022.  Eli Apple getting thrown out there is just ridiculous.  The other CB's on the roster really don't do much to inspire me either.

Yes, the Bears loss bugs me still.  That was a winnable game and you simply can't give games up like that.  Everything about that game bothered me.  I hated the game plan and I hated that the players seemingly were sleep walking for what appeared like the majority of the game.  Glad they were able to put that in the rearview, but that was not good.

Still so happy to get ANY Steelers game victory.  Just makes Monday so much better !!

    Amen Army!!!!!!

For those who care what Mel thinks, he gave us a B:

The Bengals were in a great spot with the No. 5 overall pick, because they have their quarterback of the future, unlike the teams that had the four picks in front of them. Joe Burrow is their guy. Would they go with Burrow's buddy Ja'Marr Chase, an elite receiver? Or maybe Penei Sewell, a tremendous linemen who could be the team's left tackle for the next 10 years? They also could have traded down to pick up more premium picks for a team trying to get one of the leftover top quarterbacks.

In the end, they went with Chase, the 2019 Biletnikoff Award winner who makes this offense must-see TV. He had 1,780 receiving yards and caught 20 touchdown passes from Burrow in 2019 before opting out of last season. Burrow now has Chase, Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd and Joe Mixon as good -- and young -- playmakers around him, though the Bengals still need to upgrade at tight end. This is a group that can grow together and should terrify defensive coordinators.

On Day 2, Cincinnati traded down and took Trevor Lawrence's college left tackle Jackson Carman (46), who coach Zac Taylor will have compete for one of the starting guard spots. It was high for Carman on my board. He dealt with a back injury during the pre-draft process, and there were better linemen available. I even think D'Ante Smith (139) could be better in the long-term. The organization did well in the trade, though, adding pick Nos. 122 and 139 -- the pick that yielded Smith -- for moving down eight spots.

Edge rusher Joseph Ossai (69) adds to a young defensive end rotation that was boosted in free agency by the signing of Trey Hendrickson. Ossai is a speed rusher who never quits on plays, and he should get plenty of third-down snaps as a rookie. Cameron Sample (111) is a hulking defensive end who is totally different physically than Ossai. Could he move inside to tackle? Tyler Shelvin (122) is a massive two-down nose tackle, which makes me wonder about the future of D.J. Reader in Cincinnati. The Bengals got my top-ranked kicker Evan McPherson (149) and could have a steal in my third-ranked center Trey Hill (190).

I don't see how Chase fails in the NFL, barring injury, which means this long-term grade for this class could come down to whether Carman turns into a quality starter. It's no sure thing. Osaai and Sample are solid picks.

Not much to disagree with though the B does not quite add up. Carman is the only pick I really would have preferred another player. I agree with Mem. They hammered the lines like never before. Good on them. And a kicker just for kicks. Ha.

    TDN:

D’Ante Smith was the primary starting left tackle for East Carolina in 2018 and 2019. He was expected to start for a third year in 2020 but an undisclosed injury limited him to just one game. Smith features a lean, athletic build and has good mobility, hand usage, and length. Where Smith needs to improve is with his weight distribution, body control, contact balance, and functional strength. He also needs to fill out his frame to help him hold up more effectively at the point of attack. There is developmental appeal with Smith, but there is notable work to be done. His best fit comes in a west coast offense where he can quick set and avoid deeper pass sets and in a zone blocking run scheme where his modest power can be mitigated and mobility accentuated. There should not be expectations of him starting on Sundays early in his career, but he could compete for a starting role by Year 3 should he develop.

    Ideal Role: Developmental offensive tackle.

Scheme Fit: West coast, zone run scheme.

Dallas took the guy I liked. So here’s another one. Bam.

I would not be surprised if they went defense. They have holes on the edge and interior DL and there are a couple guys who could be there at 38. It’s not a slam dunk but you have to have the conversation.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if they traded back.

But I expect them to stick and take OL.

This could be the best bengals draft in 15 years.

Much more than a swap, that’s for sure. Gio’s 771 combined yards were his most since 2017 and his 6 TDS were the most since 2014, his second year. And he caught a career-high 79.7% of balls thrown his way. I’m in no rush to see him leave.

He’s excellent in the role they ask of him, to be able to spell Mixon when needed or tote the note in his absence.  Works for me.
