Aren't we using that Denver zone-blocking scheme now? He might end up being a decent backup here.
If I remember correctly one of the criticisms made after Foster was traded to Detroit had to do with him being a poor fit in anything but a zone blocking scheme.
I do not recall this team moving to a zone blocking scheme a la Denver.
I think Foster could be a decent back-up.
Collins, Whit, Roland (who I though played quite well) with Levi, Foster and a Rookie backing them up.
Now, all we need is a Center.

Chad is a crying, whining, biatch. TJ was just burned out on this team never realizing its potential. It is a drag but he has moved on.
I hold no ire for TJ. Good luck out there with Mora.
-
pat white is going well before the 7th round, mate.
probably so. we do need another QB, maybe a guy like Holbrook (NM)?
Huber will probably go abit earlier as well.
I waver on Orakpo a bit but he has high upside. He is a bit like Gholston, who stunk it up in NY last year but was not all his fault.
My concern is his smarts. We've had our share of DE/LB rush players who have been busts. Reinard Wilson springs to mind.
I also have left WR off the list, as I think we look solid and had a haul last year. Time for that talent to mature and contribute.
My alternate #6 is Raji. BDPA if Orakpo is gone.

people who think they are rich have a diamond encrusted Breitling.
actual rich people send their G5 to pick up people who wear diamond encrusted Breitling's.
-
The only concern I ave re SMith is he tanked so he would go to a better team later in r1. I doubt he goes past TB at 19, he is simply too talented but those at the top will be gun-shy due to his flakiness.
-
I could see Cleveland taking Orakpo or Raji...they also need a WR and Crabtree might be right there.
Huber SOLVES the P problemin one swoop. Larson, and the scrub, would be gone IMHO.
If Britton is gone, and if we don't get Orakpo in r1, then Barwin could be vry attractive in r2. I am not an Everette Brown guy.
Correct, Sintim could be gone and we are looking solid at LB. A CB might make sense in that range, maybe a guy like Sean Smith from Utah or Mickens.
Grabbing Pat White is less liekly with O'Sullivan signed. If we had signed a less capable QB, then i'd advocate taking White as early as r4.
For a late, versatility pick, I like Herman Johnson from LSU who can play everywhere but C. Since I am not seeing the talk of C as much as I'd expect, maybe there is a plan afoot to get Williams going at C?
-
290 and chiseled? That means with some extra feedings per day, he could get to 310 without becoming so fat it hurts his speed.
Intriguing.
-
r1: Orakpo - DE
r2: Eben Britton - OT
r3a: Antoine Caldwell C
r3b: Clint Sintim - LB
r4a: Kevin Huber - P
r4b: Zach Follett LB
r5: Ian Johnson RB
r6: Louis Vasquez G
r7: Pat White QB/Slash

Sims has turned out the be a great pick. Now, if we can gt Shirley to mature, he could be a Haynesworth/Rodgers type player.
I like Raji but consider OT and DE more important.
-
I was happy when he got here and not so sad to see him go. he just got hurt too much. good guy but fragile.
current safeties can carry the load. crocker is solid.
-
Sadly, Housh is a goner.
I doubt we'd roll the dice on crabtree for the points mentioned above re our 2 WR taken last year. That and I am unconvinced of his speed and durability. Looks like Kelley Washington but shorter (as in, not a starter)
With CJ, Cheech, Caldwell, Simpson, Urrutia and maybe one more WR in the draft we will be fine at WR.
-
Of the FA QB's, there are none that get me interested. Leftwich or Carr could be options, I suppose.
Pat White intrigues me. Gotta believe he has a better arm and legs than Fitzsackalot.
-
doucho mccinco was frozen out....they showed him by looking elsewhere, calling plays away from him and generally ignoring him.
-
Maybe now we can focus on big Albert Haynesworth.
And maybe, just maybe, Jesus Christ will decide to descend from heaven and want to play for the Bengals.
We'd still go 7-9 tops.
I'll back away slowly from Hoosier in fear of sudden lightning strikes...
Oh come on. Hoosier didn't say anything blasphemous. The New Testament makes it clear that while Jesus was the only one capable of saving the sins of the world, he was at best a mediocre LB. Sure, he was good at getting after the QB on the overload blitz, but his weakness has always been in zone coverage. He just wouldn't fit in Cincy.
...he could have been, at best, a slow corner/safety hybrid a la Kaesviharn, destined for ST. Would be fun at parties with the whole "water into wine" bit though.
-
He could be a critical portion, but no more so than Rudi or Dillon before.
Well I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, but it does serve as a reminder that those guys were once considered so important to the Bengals immediate plans both players were tagged and eventually signed to long term deals. So there's that.
The O-line and Carson's elbow are more "everthing" than Benson. What's Palmer's elbow have to do with which personnel moves need to be made in the very near future? Or are you suggesting this team drafts a new QB? Because if you aren't...what's the QB position got to do with anything? And as for the O-line...we're both making the same point, but from different directions. That being, a strong running game improves the odds Palmer stays healthy more than any other factor you can name.
Palmer's elbow and return to form is more important than the return of Cedric Benson. As we saw from this year, replacing a RB is far easier than a QB, especially if a guy (albeit a well regarded college RB and former r1 pick) off the street can come in a play well enough to be considered as a "Bell Cow" replacement. Dillon replaced Ki-Jana, Rudi replaced Dillon, Perry was to replace Rudi and now Cedric is to replace Perry...they can come and go and rarely outlast their deals.
The game in which Palmer got hurt, the running game was clicking (with Perry no less), the pass blocking wasn't, thus the O-line is far more important to the single act of signing Benson to a long term deal (also see the Denver Broncos running game and interchangelable RB's)
I'd even say TJ is more ciritcal than Benson. No, he isn't. As a fan I know TJ better, and I like him more. In fact, he may be my favorite Bengal player right now, at this golden frozen moment in time. So yeah, I want him back. But having TJ in stripes doesn't turn anything around, and it doesn't change anything for the better. At best, it's preserving the status quo. Conversely, if Benson truly is a franchise-quality RB then this team is much closer to the mythical playoff contending Bengals Bill Cowher was talking about.
That is silly. Having TJ in stripes ensures that this team has a patently proven 3rd down machine, and if the status quo means getting another 90-100 catches a year for over 1000 yards, then I consider that FAR more difficult to replace via current talent, FA or the draft, and far more important than Benson.
If he goes somewhere else, then there are some good FA's to go after, Derrick Ward and Dominick Rhodes are attractive...Fine, chase 'em till you're blue. But when you're done chasing after ghosts you're going to turn quickly to draft picks. Draft picks that both of us want to use on other positions.
There is no reason to consider them any more or less viable than Benson. This league is all about the $, and Benson's agent will work to get him as much coin as possible, as will the agents for the others.
Benson is no more under contract than the others and any perceived loyalty is smoke.
I'll end with the statement that I very much want Benson to return but not at the expense of skimping on O-line or letting TJ walk. Those two focus areas are more important than Benson.
-
I wouldn't offer Benson insane money either....
I just might. And I'd consider doing it for all of the reasons you pointed out....plus a few others. But mostly it comes down to this. Teams rarely find potential building blocks/franchise players off of the street, and THIS team...at this moment in time....can't afford to let this opportunity pass.
Keeping Benson in stripes is the key to everything.
I think you might be overstating it a bit..."everything"?
He could be a critical portion, but no more so than Rudi or Dillon before. The O-line and Carson's elbow are more "everthing" than Benson. I'd even say TJ is more ciritcal than Benson.
I think he should get a very solid offer and I hope he takes it. Having him come back and continue to get better behind a better O-line and rehabb'd Carson.
If he goes somewhere else, then there are some good FA's to go after, Derrick Ward and Dominick Rhodes are attractive...
As for my take on Graham, I think he will command too much FA $ for the Bengals to sign him. Someone will overpay for a kciker who is not the best under pressure.

I was just curious where most of you were standing in regards to our own free agents. I can see a free agency period consisting of trying to resign some of our own and very little after that. As for the restrcited guys, is there anyone we need to make sure we secure to keep other teams from offering them something we don't match ?? What do you think we do with these guys ??
UNRESTRICTED
Stacy Andrews, OT
Cedric Benson, RB
Darryl Blackstock, LB
Chris Crocker, S
Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB
Jamar Fletcher, CB
Eric Ghiaciuc, C
Shayne Graham, K
TJ Houshmandzadeh, WR
John Thornton, DT
RESTRICTED
John Busing, S
DeDe Dorsey, RB
Glenn Holt, WR
Rashad Jeanty, LB
Brandon Johnson, LB
Cory Mays, LB
UNSIGNED (EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS)
Daniel Coats, TE/FB
Orien Harris, DT
The unrestricted guys I'd like to see back are TJ, Shayne, Benson, Blackstock, and Crocker, I didn't see enough of Fletcher to make a call and I could take or leave Fitzpatrick. Thornton, Ghiaciuc, and Andrews can get bent...
I think Holt can hit the bricks with Mays. Busing is a big teams guy if he can stay healthy. Dorsey is always talked about getting his shot, but has also been nicked up. The status of our LB corps makes Jeanty and Johnson the two that are the most to be concerned about with depth being a consideration when our guys go down.
Harris was big coming out of college, but has never gotten a big chance and if he has, I missed it. I know he got some playing time this year. Coats should be removed from the thought of being an everyday FB after we draft one this year...
On offense, what we do with Benson and TJ will dictate the draft plan and what this team can be expected to produce next year.
For Benson, he warrants a market offer. Nothing insane, just a solid offer to stay and be part of the team. 3-4 years is about all they could get out of him. I would have liked to have seen more James Johnson as I feel he could replace Watson. Keeping DeDe, in the chance he can get healthy, probably won't cost much. Then adding a true FB will only make Benson and others more effective.
As for TJ, this is a real puzzle. At 32, he "should" be slowing down but then again, he has never been a burner. He catches about everything, blocks well, is a team guy and is trusted by Palmer. Seeing as there is no clear repalcement, though Caldwell had his moments, an effort must be made to sign him. I think tagging him would be a mistake so getting him another 3 year deal for good coin makes the most sense. 2010 is an uncapped year, so we will absolutely see him go bye-bye after 09 were he tagged. For Holt, signing him should not be difficult but then it creates a logjam of WR's. Someone has to go. In my mind it will be Chatman as he cannot stay healthy.
On defense, priority should be given to B. Johnson and Blackstock. These guys improved the LB play by leaps and bounds over the Landon/Scrub crew of 07 (not that it would be too difficult).
Crocker shined during his time and also warrants being brought back for decent deal. His intensity was infectious. I think D-Jax ends up on the outgoing list.
Most of the others I am indifferent about. I was very critical of Fitz-sack-trick, much of it warranted, but I also concede that the line play was out of his control.
Guys who are sure goners: Ghiaciuc, Graham, Fletcher, Thornton, Andrews and Busing. There are upgrades currently on the team and in the draft that will fill those holes. Some will argue that Graham merits a new deal but that will be a big chunk of coin for a kicker who I think is overrated.

Rather than ignore the crap teams we played, look at the playoff teams we played and the scores,
Ravens two losses 17-10 and 34-3
Steelers two losses 38-10 and 27-10
Titans 24-7
Giants 26-23
Eagles 13-13
Colts 35-3
As I remember the games, we were only in two games though, the Giants and Eagles games. The rest were blow outs regardless of score.
0-7-1 against playoff teams show we aren't very good. These mostly lopsided losses show we are really not competitive either on defense or offense. So while I think they have to pick a day 1 LT starter in round 1, it wouldn't shock me if they went for defense. Again, with so many holes on both sides anything is possible. The decision will not be hard though at #6. Is there a DT, DE or ILB worth a #6 pick? Is there a LT worth a #6 pick? Not too many choices really.
One thing the weekend showed was that winning teams have dominate olines and dlines. We have neither.
Injuries, Injuries, Injuries... How much must I pound this into your thick skulls!? How many starters did we loose? Our coach also failed to get this team ready for the season.
so, now you say we are one coach away?

this team needs upgrades at LB, DE and CB.
Overall depth at LB needs looking at.
Odom and Geathers will get another year but depth must be addressed.
At CB, Joseph will need to be healthy or risk being demoted. A day 1 CB could help with this.
I'd say this team is 3 defensive players away from being a top 10 D.
Same can be said for the offense. Need a C, FB and OT.
This team is 6 players from being consistently good.

I saw him play 2 times this season for Northern Illinois on television. He is a real stud and played well
in both games. Mr. English can cover the field very well. He could be a nice addition to a defense as he has a nose for the ball. He can elevate his stock at the combine and possibly go mid 2nd to early 3rd round.
sounds like London Fletcher

@HoF, Taylor Mays lines up where he is supposed to be and does not diverge. Discipline is a key to success at the S position. His notbale whack on the Penn St. wr, and his own guy, was epic.
Again, I've got nothing negative to say about Mays. He's an outstanding prospect and if an NFL team uses him in a more diverse role, and gets more big play production as a result, then the idea has some merit. But there's no way I could pull the trigger on Mays at #6. In fact, I couldn't pick him if Maualaga were available, amongst others.
Rey will go in the top 10. I find it hard to believe that the Bengals take a USC LB as their r1 in consecutive years but with SoP, you never know.
I found Rey to be a bit sluggish on many plays vs Penn St. but his body of work speaks volumes.Again, playing within the defensive scheme was a point USC stressed against Penn State, with Pete Carrol going so far as to say the only real threat of losing was if Cushing and Maualaga tried too hard to top each other for top honors. Instead, everyone did their jobs perfectly and player of the game honors ended up going to the OTHER starting LB.
Agree, and I make the same point about Mays, he did his job, stayed "in-scheme" and they all emerged with a team win. Maybe I should have said I have seen Rey look faster, rather than say he looked sluggish. Perhaps "tight" is a better word.
One thing is sure, the Benglas have a prime spot to take a serious implact player @ 6.

This year, with this team, gotta take the BPA...
All those mentioned would significantly improve the quality/depth at each positon.
I would, however, add Taylor Mays to the top prospect list. He's gotta be on the radar as well.
Forget Andre Smith...

I agree...and disagree
The thought is correct: Track Star does not equal OT, and vice-versa.
The concern is that there is a level of preofessionalism that is missing here. When preparing for the portion of life that will determine your career, the guy has resorted to overeating/undertraining his way out of te first round and a significant amount of $. How will he react to the small towels and non-reinforced commodes at PBS? with Disdain and contempt?
Bottom line is: PASS
why roll the dice on a non-professional minded guy who'd rather show his disinterst by loafing his way around the key workouts of is life.
I won't be convinced he is suitable for the next level with this approach.
