New Hobbs article on .com: http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/Dunlap-looking-at-opener/4caffd9a-cfda-400e-a80f-3e6498363a35
Why would Hayes want Dunlap at 305? and have him play some tackle?
Jay Hayes cannot be trusted with Dunlap. Dunlap is an edge rusher, not an elephant DE/DT.
They did this to Geathers, bulking him up, up, up, and now he's slow and just another guy. Do this with Dunlap and I will be pissed off. Idiot.

So, which team signs Jordan, Pittsburgh, Baltimore or Cleveland?
Hi, Jordan, welcome aboard. Glad to have you. Now, have a seat and tell us all about Cincinnati's new offense...
My money's on the Ravens.
I agree that Baltimore would take him in-house and waterboard the whole new offense out of him.
With Leftwich breaking an arm, maybe the Steelers bring him in there for a few week.

I wasn't as much of a Brat hater as everyone else, but I do like what I've seen from Gruden.
What stands out to me the most is that he isn't afraid to keep going back to what works. Brat NEVER would have had Benson run the ball 16 times in what was essentially 1 quarter. Never. Preseason, regular season, or playoffs. But hey...if it works, then why not, right?
There are a few things I have noticed, now after watching that game twice.
I think Benson is going to have a ridiculous season. Seriously. He can handle 30+ carries a game and they will go to him heavy. We have not seen anything but vanilla offense yet, so if they can blend in an up-tempo/no-huddle at times and alternate with the quick hit passes, and Benson getting the ball, there won't be a defense who can play with them into the 4th quarter. Once it late in a game, Scott and Leonard with fresh legs will be untouchable.
Also, I think Gruden's plan will include much more changes of tempo. quick, quick, quick, slow, quick, slow. This unpredictable approach will also create confusion and mismatches, and I think this plays into the strength of the team. Gresham is a mismatch, Green in single coverage is a mismatch everytime. Ship with an LB, Simpson covered by a safety, etc. These will occur if the tempo is all jacked up. Knowing where to go, when to go, go, go, and then pause, and go. That's the way to find the weakness and mismatches.
When Dalton has to go deep, he needs to have a 7 step drop and then step up, maybe even roll out. His arm is simply not strong enough to hit the long range lasers, and that's probably going to be OK. He could not really throw the ball 50 yards, but big deal. He does not need to. They do need to go deep enough to keep safeties form cheating, and Green and Simpson on fly routes will force them to pay attention, even if Dalton would be hard pressed to get the ball there.
Gresham needs to find the seam faster. He kind of ambles on routes and does not look to naturally go to the open spot. TE is a bit more feel that WR. WR is precision and crispness. TE is getting between and below or above. Soft spots. He needs to find those spots and his ypc will go way up.
Gruden has quite a lot to work with. This can work as long as they don't overthink it. It does not have to set a qhole bunch of records, just produce one more point than the opponent in each game. Just one more point. Win.

In back to back weeks he's made the CB covering him look just stupid.
It will be fun watching him play week in and week out.
Yep. An not just the average cornerbacks. Revis and Gamble. Not exactly average.
He smoked Revis at least 6 times by my count with his cuts and speed. Gamble, well, let's just say Gamble was not even on the same level with Green.
Green is going to make quite a few CB's look silly this year. I hope Dalton can deliver strikes to him when he is open.

In the pre game show, Dave Lapham reported the compensation for acquiring Mays was:
-a 7th rd pick in the 2013 draft
That's it.
Can anyone possibly complain about it now?
uh...not me.
That's some kind of horse trading.

so far, Red Ruin
I do embrace the suck tho, as long as they keep developing youngsters
How about RedRum?

6 carries for 63 yards and a TD.....Like I've been saying for the past couple seasons....GIVE THE BALL TO BERNARD SCOTT !!!!!!!!
Scott and Benson are very very solid tandem. Perhaps Gruden will learn how to use them properly.
Green is going to be scary good. Dalton'd TD pass was a bit of a flinger. Not much more arm there than the 50 yards he put it through the air. That's max. Dalont looked sharp running the offense. Smooth and clean.
The defense held the Carolina run game to virtually zilch. very encouraging. Atkins is a good player. Lawson, Rey and Howard are looking fast and decisive. The improvement of speed at LB is very clear.
-
Anybody watch Thomas Howard cover the running back 25 yards down the field, he could be the cover LB they have had in awhile, he is impressing me very much
Howard and Lawson have speed on the outside that the Bengals have maybe never had.
If Mays gets into games, they have the speed to cover any TE in the NFL. Finally.
One thing I have like is the Gruden's play calling. With brat gone, it is nice to not have to worry about seeing an end-around every 3 or 4 games.
wasent the first play of the game an end around to green or was it a quick pass and run i didnt see it ?
I am being sarcastic. What a dumb call, huh? The rest of the game, great. First play, idiotic.
Really it went for first down yardage!
Why would you expose AJ Green to a play like that in the preseason? Maybe in the playoffs. Not against Carolina.

Let's see a 51 second TD drive. That would really get me stoked!
Got the FG, not terrible.
Much, much, much better tonight.
Now, if the Bengals are a dumpster fire, Carolina is a volcano on Mercury.
16 first downs in the first half. Wow. What a nice half of football. Even Benson avenged his fumble, which was really the only smudge in the first half.
-
It wouldn't surprise me if the Bengals ended up filling in their unused cap space with extension for guys like Hall, Whitworth and perhaps Simpson and/or Caldwell. But it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't, either.
Same. And the decision will be based, not on some imagined need to spend money... but almost entirely on the performance of the player in question.
In some ways, MB is one of the few remaining capitalists.
no, he is a socialist dressed as a capitalist. The NFL's revenue sharing plan has erased any true capitalism from the NFL as an enterprise. It goes all the way down to jersey sales.
Mike Brown is very good at gaming the system the NFL has in place. The NFL does not have a business model where "winning" on the field = "winning" at the bank. SoP has executed perfectly the plan to operate his business in the most profitable method wihtin the NFL system. But don't confuse it or him for capitalism.

It should work.
I agree.
He and Nelson form a solid pair. Crocker will start but Mays will take over by week 6.

In this situation, they Bengals are probably overpaying for Mays. The contract Mays signed pre-dates the rookie wage scale, and compared to signing a r2 safety this year or next, would have to be considered overpaying. If Mays works out to start and make an impact in the run heavy AFC North, then we should all rejoice. If not, then he is just another in a long line of SoP's bargain bin binge-ing that is a result of ignoring the safety position early in the draft, year after year.
I think you're off base. It seems to me that the Bengals couldn't get off any cheaper. The way it looks here, the 49ers paid out his hefty bonus but the Bengals only owe him his minimal salaries for the next few years. In fact I think these are league minimums:
7/30/2010: Signed a four-year, $3.91 million contract. The deal included a $2.075 million signing bonus. 2011: $405,000, 2012: $490,000, 2013: $575,000, 2014: Free Agent
/>http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5760/taylor-maysWho cares what his salary is? With the Bengals salary cap situation, it's completely irrelevant.
The only question is his talent. Is Mays a better option than what they could have gotten with a 4th round pick in next year's draft? Time will tell, but it seems like a no-brainer.
No. It is relevant, when you talk about giving up draft picks to get him.
I do agree it should be about his talent. If he was likely to be cut, the way I view it, then could be a waste of a future pick to have the privelege of getting him here. That is how I consider it overpaying.
It does seem like a no-brainer, and in this division I think he will flourish. He can cover the TE's and come up in run support. Perfect.

I don't think the issue is specific to the Mays trade, but rather to the waiver wire/trading block/scrap heap approach that Hobson illustrated. Yes, they've succeeded in reclaiming a player here and there, but it hasn't helped to build a consistent winner, and I can completely understand those who are tired of the annual story about the Bengals' newest dumpster-diving find.
Agreed, but this is one that even I'll defend Mike Brown on. It's not like getting San Fran sloppies was plan A for the safety position, it's just a target of opportunity (never mind that there was no plan A, that's another story). Also, as I've said before, sometimes a guy is a casualty of a coach who feels the need to clean out the cupboard. That looks to be the case here.
Sometimes when getting a good deal, it's easy to talk yourself out of it based on the fact you weren't outbid. Like when you have a bid accepted on a house, your first thought is probably 'they accepted...I overpaid'. Same thing here given that other teams didn't have interest. But in the end, getting such a well-regarded guy 1 year removed from college success...that's worth a 4th round gamble, right?
The safety position is one where this team has generally been very active in free agency. Daryl Williams, JoJuan Armour, Rogers Beckett, Kim Herring, Anthony Mitchell, O-maybetheworstfootballplayerever-halete, Dexter Jackson, Mike Doss, Hebert, Roy Williams, Crocker, Reggie Nelson, Wilson.... that's a long list. Most of those listed have been dreadful to average.. Only Daryl Williams, Crocker (when he got here) and Nelson (and only recently) seem to be anything more than average.
For whatever reason, the Bengals have not taken safety very high, generally due to the gaping roster holes elsewhere or the chance to take a very desire player early (r1-3). I think that SF had a large stockpile and felt this was the time to get the best value for Mays, who likely would have been buried on the depth chart. If they can get value for him now, rather than cutting him later and getting nothing, well, at least that's something (even something SoP could learn). At least SoP can be given a modicum of credit for attempting (though failing) to get Whitner, who by all regards is a "Plan A" player, to address an area of obvious need.

Just saw the seahawks released Kentwan Balmer. Some folks on the board wanted to draft him. Is he Tank's replacement? hmmm.... I know nothing of his time in Seattle, so maybe he is simply not good?

this guy thinks the bengals may have something in dalton. i must say i agree.

Progress!
Next game, he'll go for no int's.

I like the move. Better than waiting for Kim Herring, I mean, Ethan Kilmer, I mean, Roy Williams, I mean, Gibril Wilson to heal. Let's just hope he can listen better than Ndukwe did.
Mr. Mays, please listen to Coach Zimmer and do what he says.

At the start of the second quarter, Green dropped Dalton's pass but his cut left Revis tripping over himself. It was just like what Green did to Hall in the video from training camp. Made him look silly. Green will get over his rookie dropsies, that is what preseason is for.
Dalton's touch on the hard intermediate timing routes is about my only concern.
He seems to recognize the defenses well enough. He can move out of the pocket smoothly and keep looking downfield. He did not get discouraged when he started slow.
Here's to hoping they can rebound during the short week and keep improving.
Another thing I did like was Jason Shirley being aggressive and disruptive on the D-line. he's a massive, Shaun Rogers/Albert Haynesworth sized guy. If they can get him to figure it out, he's a monster waiting to happen.
-
As soon as one offical had Pryor at a sub 4.4 forty, it was game on for Al Davis.
That being said, Pryor's time was very impressive.
Hope old Hue Jackson can get something out of him out there on the coast.
I fugured he would go there, but can't say it was the best place for him to go.
Army, you called it. Pryor is a Raider.
Since they have bupkis at WR and TE, I bet he is a Brad Smith-type player once he serves his suspension. Line him up in a split and have him run out routes. 10-12 yards real fast, make a cut and catch the ball. easy enough, and will be tough to defend given his size and speed.
-
Dalton showed some things at least...AJ Green...not so much (so overrated). The 0-line was dominated in the running game and the defensive backfield and LB's are what they are - not very good and it will cost them a lot of games.
I love Dalton's quick release and ability to throw on the run, he also doesn't get rattled easily and let's plays develop and has a natural ability to find guys - wish they had a better line in front of him.
Any ways, another beat-down, what's new around here.
The DB's improved from last week, to a point. The Run D was very good against a good O-line. Starting LB's were solid, not sure what you were watching.
Green, well, he dropped some balls he needed to have. How he responds will tell us quite a bit. To me, he will buckle down further and overcome it. Also, it was raining buckets. Plus, we have about 6 others guys who can catch the ball. However, as I see it, there is only one guy who's gonna throw the ball this year. And his progress is in question.
Dalton looked better. He started slow. Floated passes, looked rushed, but then settled down and was better. The rate at which he can progress will be key because theer is NO ONE behind him. Yet. <cougn...pryor...cough>...
The O-line is junk. Cook, junk. Livings, junk. Smith may get there by mid-season. Williams is 57 years old. Whit is solid but can't do it all. They will need to grab another G and a vet C if they are possibly give Dalton a fair shake. Doing so will also bolster Benson, who can't do it all, too.
-
One thing though that had him successful in college was he ran alot of bootlegs, made alot of throws on the run, so why dosnt Gruden let him do that maybe he would feel comfortable.
Thay can mix some of that in the gameplan but a naked bootleg that is a pass to a TE lie Scaife or Gresh has a limited frequency of uses. It is the fundamentals they need to execute. Simple stuff: 3 step drop and hit the slant. Granted, a WR must also catch the ball. 5 step drop and nail an out. He has to make the right progressions and not float the ball. I am very hopeful he will continue to settle in and be able to start faster and be more at ease in the system, commanding the playbook and the situations. Tossing INT's just won't cut it.
Gosh, just banging around on some FA lists, there are some guys on the street who won't win a ton of games but at least will remove the overarching pressure off Dalton and let him learn at a proper tempo. Maybe Delhomme could be Dalton's Kitna?
-
Matt O'Donnel (76) is huge. He is holding down the left side pretty well.
LeFevour has no vision.
All i know is for the people who want Dalton to sit and wait his turn, there is no QB on this team for him to learn from. These guys are horrible, sorry but i think Dalton is the best option at this point.
What's funny about this situation is the Bengals "Could" have made a play for Donovan McNabb or Hasselback, so Dalton could get a full year of learning and build-up. Considering who is waiting behind McNabb and Hasselback (Ponder and Locker), that would be the preferable course. Gradkoski is not McNabb or Hasselback.
Right now, there is no one out there who could help bring Dalton along. s**t, maybe they bring Testaverde in... or dare I suggest Favre? Jesus. Not many options. God forbid they draft Pryor and permanently bruise Dalton's fragile psyche.

Browns and Broncos Beat Up
in Cincinnati Bengals
Posted
Somewhere in Cincinnati, Cedric Benson is rubbing his hands together and licking his chops. Feasting on 2nd stringers for a couple of weeks will do this offense good.
