  1. Bengals need a win here or they can forget about the division.

I think they get it. :sure:

I think they get it too... but I still think they can forget about the division.

The Ravens only have one game left against a team with a winning record (the Bengals in week 17). I know the Ravens have been inconsistent, but they are going to be heavily favored in each of their next 4 games (@Cle, Indy, @SD, Cle).

They swept the Steelers... so the only way the Bengals will have any legitimate shot to win the division is for Baltimore to s**t the bed vs. the Browns. It's possible... but unlikely.

Frankly, having Baltimore win their next 4 games is not a bad thing for the Bengals, because if Baltimore goes into week 17 at 12-3, it's unlikely that they'll have much to play for.

Except that maybe they'll realize if they beat us that week they can keep us out - versus someone who scares them a lot less like the Broncos or Jets or something. It will be interesting.

I've gone on record as being worried about the Broncos and Titans, and as much as I can't fathom Tebow continuing to win, he is. Football is so much about emotion, and those guys are mainlining it...

Either way, it looks like the two wild card games will involve the AFC West winner (probably LA), and the Texans. I'd hope we get the Texans.

  2. Oh wait... we have 3 first and 2 second round picks in the next two years!

3 Firsts and 3 Seconds, with an outside shot at 4 Firsts and 2 Seconds

Yes, in my giddiness I slipped on the math. So the Raiders will lose out this year, giving us a top 8 pick, and then we'll beat them to a pulp in the AFC championship game next year, so we get the 28th pick in the first - and have the immense satisfaction of watching Palmer lose for the SECOND time next season against us.

  3. One other thing to keep in mind with the whole MB criticism train.

He was against the old CBA, and we struggled. The value on FA's and Draft picks was all whacky. This new CBA is much more business friendly, and I think you're going to see him work the system like master. Love him or hate him, if there's one thing you can say about MB, it's that he's a helluva business man.

  4. how about the halftime adjustments by gruden and zim.

Yarp. Our old friend Kirk talks about Zimmer's 2nd half adjustments.

And they've been doing it all season.

Cincinnati has outscored their opponents 39-16 in the 3rd quarter and 87-43 in the 4th quarter.

Many of the past Bengal teams would come out flat in the 3rd quarter and find a way to lose the game in the 4th quarter. This group is different.

I saw a stat on one of the articles that we were 10-38 or something under Marvin when trailing at the half. We are 3-1 with Andy Dalton. How much of that stat reflects something else: we had Brat as our coordinator during that same time. And now we have Gruden.

Whatever the source, we've traded Brat and Carson for Gruden and Dalton.

For the something like the 7th week in a row I found myself having a curious reaction during the game. We were down, I thought we probably wouldn't win, but man I was loving my team. That second TD drive, when AD just carved them up...I just kept thinking...boy the future is bright. And then, week after week, he goes and just gets...Magical. He's got that Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers 'IT' in him. And that's not hyperbole. He's a ROOK, and we can already see it.

Give me a stouter run game and a couple of more enforces on D and the sky is the limit with this QB at the helm. Oh wait... we have 3 first and 2 second round picks in the next two years!

For the first time ever here, I see the makings of a dynasty.

What a road it's been since hearing our Franchise QB was giving up on us!

  5. Wow, The position is good right now? Really? I'd say it's the one place on our D where we don't have an identity. D-Line for sure, and our secondary is pretty tight (those #'s I posted above are still quite impressive, compared to league averages). But our LB's lack flair. Lack pop (of course, if Rey could connect on his diving whiffs we'd have a lot more of that pop).

In fact, I'd say the two positions on the team where we have the least identity, and could best use a new-blood infusion of, oh, I dunno, a little something juicier, would be G and LB. I actually have high hopes for Howard's continued improvement, and actually quite liked what I saw from Lawson last week. But Rey is not spectacular, and frankly, he's not on the field much the last few years either.

  6. I'm a huge Burzflict fan. And I basically keep seeing us taking him with our first 1st because I don't think the other elite-level players who fit our needs will be there. No T. Richardson. No Mo Claiborne (or Dre' Kirkpatrick for that matter). So as far as BPA, Burzflict looks like he'd fall quite nicely to us - and it seems a position we could use.

Matt Forte and LeSean McCoy went in the mid-late second, and I think we can expect to get a guy like Chris Polk there. If you knew that, who would you take in the 1st?

Gimme any of these guys in the first:

    CB Claiborne

    RB Richardson

    CB Kirkpatrick

    OG DeCastro (my current man-crush)

    LB Burzflict

We get any two of those 5 and I'd be elated. Frankly, I'd even be fine with taking two OG's, or a T that we could plug into OG and could backup our bookends.

  7. Although for as many years back as I can remember I've been clamoring for Safety, I'm not sure it's such a strong need anymore because we have a lot of depth and someone will emerge.

Reggie Nelson has one brain fart a game but is otherwise really strong. Crocker is meh, but look at who's in line behind him.

Marvin has publicly drooled over Mays since he's been added to our roster. He's also been very high on Jeromy Miles, and thinks he has a future as a starter. Add the recently drafted Robert Sands to the mix... and I just don't think Safety is as glaring a need for a 1st as we have at other positions.

Besides, there aren't any game changers this year and we're going to take Mathieu in 2013 anyway

  8. Well, if you are going to go 0-16 and have the 1st pick AND take back to back QB's, now is the time to do it with this new CBA. Cam Newton cost what, 8 M per year. And Dalton = pennies.

But man, could we REALLY use those two first and third round picks we could have gotten from trading Palmer and Chad now...

In the next draft we need a CB, S, LB (x2), DE, DT, C, RB...

Gosh, that's depressing to look at.

  9. http://www.local12.com/news/local/story/Chad-Ochocinco-Reportedly-Traded-to-New-England/C7ahm00PaU2VKB0C0rJ9tw.cspx

Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco has reportedly been traded to the New England Patriots.

Local 12 Sports Director Brad Johansen says all indications from multiple sources he's spoken to is that the Bengals have agreed to a trade with Patriots for a draft choice...but one that that has not been disclosed. Brad was told that Ochocinco was not released...but rather dealt.

The Bengals had the option on Chad's final contract year at over $6 million but believed after last season it was best to part ways. He spent 10 years years here after coming in as a second round pick in 2001.

Local 12 Sports Director Brad Johansen will have more ahead on Local 12 News at 6 p.m.

  10. I just started reading David Brooks' blog in the NYTimes (http://brooks.blogs.nytimes.com/). Pretty fascinating stuff focusing mostly on behavior. He leans to the other side of the aisle than I do, but I've always found him to be wonderfully sensible and objective. Anyway, his blog referred to an article in Slate magazine evaluating Quarterbacks and their eventual performance based not on the Wonderlic - which is notoriously inaccurate (see Alex Smith), but on the language the QB's actually use in interviews which is terrifically predictive of success (Aaron Rodgers was off the charts):

"It’s notoriously difficult to figure out which top collegiate quarterbacks will succeed in the NFL. Pro teams give prospects an SAT-type test called the Wonderlic test, which doesn’t predict all that accurately. A company called Achievement Metrics, on the other hand, studies the words college athletes use in media interviews. Some use words that signal high degrees of confidence, conceptual complexity and team orientation. Others use words that signal self-centeredness and distrust.

The results of their work were recently written up by Machael Agger in Slate. The most arresting example concerns a choice the San Francisco 49ers faced in 2005, whether to draft Alex Smith or Aaron Rodgers as their future quarterback. Both were college stars and Smith had a phenomenal score on the Wonderlic test. But Smith didn’t use common leadership words in his interviews, while Rodgers had leadership words spewing out of his mouth."

Guess who scored quite high, and who scored low (sorry, can't paste the graphics)?

It's actually quite amazing when looking at the graph to see which types of QB's land where on the Positive Power vs Ingroup Affiliation scores. Anyway, I'm feeling good about Dalton - and even better about kicking that other POS to the curb!

  11. A-/B+

Wasn't thrilled with the first two pics, but knew we were taking the absolute best players available for absolute needs - and in the same stroke sweeping out the trash in our team. I was very happy with 3-4-5, and after that probably would have given us an A+. The next three picks were all meh.

FWIW, Mel Kiper just called us the Winner of the Draft on ESPN News.

  12. 04/04/2011 - Southern Illinois Pro day: When it comes to Korey Lindsey, it's buyer beware for NFL teams. The Southern Illinois cornerback clearly has the talent to succeed at the next level, but back-to-back hamstring injuries have kept Lindsey from showcasing the talents that made him a first team All-American selection by The Associated Press his senior season. Lindsey was one of 11 players who took part in the Southern Illinois pro day on March 24. Representatives from 10 teams were in attendance, including Bears assistant defensive backs/safeties coach Gil Byrd. The event was held outdoors on FieldTurf. The 22-year-old pulled his right hamstring at Northwestern's pro day on March 8, and he did it again at his alma mater on March 24. Lindsey (5-foot-10 1/4, 194 pounds) posted a 4.33-second short shuttle, a 7.11 mark in the three-cone drill and did 10 reps in the bench press. Lindsey's hamstring issues leave NFL teams with less information than they have for other draft candidates. If healthy, he is a probable third-round pick, but it's now more likely he'll be available into the fifth round. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com

  13. I think Reggie Stephens (OL drafted late last year, the other guy, you know - not Otis) will surprise everyone this year

I suspect they will try to sign 3 or 4 undrafted lineman

Still a chance they might take one in 7 as well, tho I think RB and K should be what the address with those two picks

I think Reggie is going to start on the line this year. That's how much I like what I saw of him last year.

  14. This is the obligatory late round WR throwaway pick.

Freddie Brown and Dez Briscoe are laughing at us.

Indeed. I was gonna go with Bennie Brazell, Mario Urrutia, and Reggie McNeal

    I freakin

    H A T E

    this godd@mn pick

Hate is actually far too mild a word.

Its like we picked a name out of a hat with nothing but mediocre wide receivers in it

God help us, Mike Brown has woken up and started making picks, folks.........][/b

Should have taken a second safety, power RB, or Kai Forbath here

Maybe that's what's going on. They've given Mikey his one let me get my late WR nod in exchange for having control over the rest of the draft.
